the supreme Court (sC) extended its status quo order against the late and former President ferdinand marcos’ interment at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in taguig City. At the conclusion of the two-session oral arguments on petitions against marcos’ burial, the halt order was extended until october 18 to give the court more time to resolve the case on merits. “After the oral arguments were concluded, the Court en Banc met and agreed to extend the status Quo Ante order issued on August 23, 2016 served on Au-
gust 24, expiring on september 23, 2016 up to october 18, 2016,” sC Public Information office Chief theodore te said on Wednesday, september 7, according to reports from Interaksyon. With permission from President rodrigo Duterte, marcos’ hero’s burial was supposedly set on september 18. the sC initially issued a 20-day status quo ante order at the request of petitioners who sought to stop the burial. the first hearing on the oral arguments started on Wednesday, August 31. Petitioners presented their case against marcos’ burial and torture victims during the martial Law recalled their experience before the court.
During the second day of the oral arguments on Wednesday, september 7, solicitor General Jose Calida argued that there was no more trauma from the martial law years, considering that his son, ferdinand “Bongbong” marcos Jr., garnered more than 14 million votes when he ran for vice president last may. “I was surprised that during the last hearing, the victims were made to recall the horrors they experienced… there is a place for that but not here in the supreme Court… I am human your honor, I can feel their pain. But making them recount their horrible experiences is a form of retraumatizing them,” he added. PAGE A2
