ACTIVISTS rallied in support of immigrants’ rights on Saturday, January 14 at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes in downtown Los Angeles as they have across the country in the weeks since the election of Donald Trump to the presidency of the United States. A number of the president-elect’s stated intentions, including his promise to deport millions of undocumented immigrants, have sparked impassioned responses from both liberals and conservatives who say America’s immigration policy is broken. “We know for a fact that the first thing we need to do is secure the border,”
Rudy Asercion, a committee member for the Republican Party in San Francisco told the Asian Journal during a phone call on Monday, January 16. “You need to enforce immigration laws before you reform the system.” He said that lawmakers need to focus on protecting citizens in light of prior instances of terrorism-linked violence. Gaining more control over the movement of people in and out of the country and removing up to 3 million undocumented residents with criminal convictions on their records from the U.S. has to be the first step in correcting immigration policy, according to Aquilina Versoza, executive director of Pilipino Workers Center in Los Angeles, leading a chant at Asercion. Of all the universities she got accepted to, she decided on UCLA, which had the kinesiology program she admired. “This is my dream school, and it’s amazing that I got into it,” Duarte, 18, told the Asian Journal. But she knew that tuition was going to be an issue and would provide her and her parents more fi nancial stress. “That’s why I worked two jobs in high school,” Duarte remarked. “I’m the youngest of my family and I see now how difficult it is for my siblings to pay off their college debt. I knew that no matter what, I’d have to take out loans, but I wanted to prepare and hopefully, lessen my own fi nancial strains.” And for students in the University of
