PHILIPPINE President Rodrigo Duterte said he felt “like a saint” after United States President-elect Donald Trump praised him during their phone conversation last week for doing a “good” job in his brutal crackdown against illegal drugs. In his speech at the United Nations Convention Against Corruption Implementation Review in Malacañang, Duterte said that Trump also asked him to not worry about the criticisms against his anti-narcotics campaign. According to the Philippine National Police (PNP), an estimate number of 4,000 deaths has been recorded from July 1 to November 30

This has earned condemnation from the present U.S. administration under President Barack Obama and other international rights group, which in turn, supposedly triggered Duterte’s profane-laced speeches against the United States. PNP Chief Director General Ronald Dela Rosa, however, claimed this week that only a third of these death cases under investigation (DUI) were drug-related, while the remaining number were crimes allegedly conducted by perpetrators who were only using the governPAGE A2

It also cited the recent bombing attempt near its premises, which, according to the embassy, sets “as a timely reminder of the recurring threat that terrorism and political violence pose in the Philippines.” Last November 28, a street sweeper reportedly found an improvised explosive device (IED) in a trash bin around 25 meters from the U.S. Embassy’s gate in Manila. The explosive device was later safely

detonated, with no one injured. According to the advisory, possible places that could be targeted by terrorists include sporting events, hotels, clubs and restaurants, places of worship, schools, public areas, and shopping malls. “With this information comes the reminder for U.S. citizens to elevate your level of security awareness. It is imperative that you enhance your personal sense of vigilance and remain alert and cognizant of your surroundings and of those around you,” the advisory added. The embassy also told Americans to immediately report anything suspicious to the nearest law enforcement or security official.

MANILA - President Duterte yesterday vowed to retain the country’s Vice President until her term ends, days after she resigned from the Cabinet complaining of a “plot to steal” her position. Vice President Leni Robredo resigned as housing secretary on Monday, Dec. 5, saying she would still support the President but would challenge some policies, such as the deadly war on drugs and moves to reinstate the death penalty. There is no plot to unseat Robredo, Duterte said, adding that he has no quarrel with her despite his decision to exclude her from Cabinet meetings. “I will assure Leni and the rest of the Bicol region that you will have her until the very end of her term,” Duterte said in a chance interview in Albay yesterday. “And there is no such PAGE A2
