UNITED States President Donald Trump complimented Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte for doing an “unbelievable” and “great” job on his campaign against illegal drugs, according to a leaked transcript of the two leaders’ phone conversation last month. The full transcript, which was first obtained by The Washington Post and The Intercept, apparently revealed the conversation between Duterte and Trump that occurred during the closing of the 30th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Manila in April 29. “RUSSIA is a true friend.” This is what Philippine President Rodrigo said upon his return to the country on Wednesday, May 24, from his official visit to Moscow. Duterte was originally scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin, on Thursday May 25 but cut short his state visit after declaring martial law in Mindanao in the wake of a confrontation between government troops and Islamic State (IS)-linked local militants. Before leaving for the Philippines, Duterte, however, managed to have a short rendezvous with his “favorite hero” at the Kremlin. During the two leaders’ meeting, Duterte reiterated the Philippine government’s intention to strengthen its relationship with Russia. “Please consider us as a good friend. I came to visit your place and it’s to establish stronger bilateral relations. I [came] to seek your friendship and to trade, establish trade and commerce with your country,” Duterte told Putin.
