Senators urge Trump admin to continue Filipino World War II Veterans Parole program by Christina

A grouP of Democratic senators is calling for the continuation of a program that allows filipino World War II veterans to be reunited with their families in the united states, amid reports that the trump administration is reviewing immigration parole policies. In a letter addressed to President Donald trump on Wednesday, April 26, senators Dianne feinstein (D-Calif.), mazie K. hirono (D-hawaii), tim Kaine (D-Va.), Catherine Cortez masto
(D-Nev.), and Kamala harris (D-Calif.) said that less than 6,000 filipinos World War II veterans â of the 260,000 who fought â are living in the united states today and are increasingly in need of assistance from their relatives. some of the veterans have petitioned family members from the Philippines to join them in the united states; however, wait times can last years, often times exceeding 20 years, due to statutory visa caps. under the administration of former President Barack obama, the filipino World War II Veterans Parole (fWVP)
program was introduced in July 2015, which states that on a case-by-case basis, certain family members could be eligible to come to the u.s. to provide support and care for aging filipino veterans who are u.s. citizens or lawful permanent residents. once in the country, the beneficiaries could apply for work authorization. An executive order signed by trump in late January directed the review of various parole and asylum programs that are supposedly âused to prevent the lawful removal of removable aliens.â the senators, however, argued that
the case-by-case consideration, the bar on those with criminal backgrounds, and the eligibility requirements âsafeguard the program from abuse.â âWe know you understand the contributions and sacrifices that these veterans and their families have made to our country,â the letter continued. âtherefore, we hope that [united states Citizenship and Immigration services (usCIs)] will continue its full implementation of the fWVP policy uninterrupted and that you work to address the needs of these veterans.â Sen. California judge blocks part of Trumpâs sanctuary cities executive order A feDerAL judge in san francisco on tuesday, April 25 blocked a portion of President Donald trumpâs executive order that called for denying funds to areas that defy u.s. immigration authorities. u.s. District Judge William orrick ruled that the trump administration could not impose restrictions on the so-called sanctuary jurisdictions that have policies to protect undocumented immigrants, given that the president does not have the authority to dictate new federal spending policies. âfederal funding that bears no meaningful relationship to immigration enforcement cannot be threatened merely because a jurisdiction chooses an immigration enforcement strategy of which the president disapproves,â orrick wrote in his decision to the lawsuit filed by the City and County of san francisco and santa Clara County, which argued that over $2 billion in federal funding
