WhILe Pres. rodrigo Duterte got a “very good” satisfaction rating from the public, former President fidel ramos said the Philippines has been ‘losing badly’ during the first three months of the current administration. “In the overall assessment by this writer, we find our team Philippines losing in the first 100 days of Du30’s administration—and losing badly,” ramos said in the first installment of a twopart column published in the manila Bulletin on saturday, october 8. the former president — who served the country from 1992 to 1998 — wrote that Duterte’s leadership is a “huge disappointment” and “letdown to many of us.” According to ramos, Duterte’s remarks about the similarities between the holocaust and his drug war was one of his “most unfortunate gaffes.” “In the case of his recent ‘hitler quip,’ no amount of apology could mollify the long-suffering Jews who have done well for the Philippines,” ramos said. the former president also criticized Duterte’s threats to sever ties with the U.s.: “Are we throwing away decades of military partnership, tactical proficiency, compatible weaponry, predictable logistics, and soldier-to-soldier camaraderie just like that?” ramos, however, noted flaws of the current administration can still be corrected so that the Philippines can fully rise as a competitive country. “the outcome aspired for by the majority of us is to insure the better future of our younger generations, who in due time — will assume the mantle of leadership over our nation’s political, security, cultural, economic and other interests,” he said.” n
