MANILA – Although faced with the difficulty of solving the country’s drug problem, President Duterte insisted on Wednesday, Sept. 21 that he does not want to declare martial law. “Paano ko makaya ‘to? Hindi ko man ito madampot, patayin ko. Wala ‘yan, eh ayaw ko naman sa martial law (How do I resolve this? I cannot just pick them up, kill them. That’s not possible but I don’t want martial law),” Duterte said. LAS VEGAS — Rep. Dina Titus (D-Nev.) and businessman Danny Tarkanian now have the backing of the Las Vegas Asian Chamber of Commerce (LVACC) for their respective congressional races, the organization announced during two separate events last week.

This comes after the chamber made its first-ever endorsement of a federal candidate last month when it threw support behind Rep. Joe Heck’s (R-Nev.) bid for the Senate seat that will be vacated by Sen. Harry Reid. It has also endorsed Rep. Cresent Hardy’s (RNev.) re-election campaign for the 4th Congressional District.

Though the chamber has made high-profile announcements in support of Republican candidates, it also endorsed Rep. Dina Titus, a Democrat who is running for re-election for the state’s 1st Congressional District, spanning parts of Las Vegas and unincorporated Clark County. On Friday, Sept. 16, Vinuya praised Titus for building an “incredible record as a public servant” and being a “friend to the chamber and the Asian community.” “The endorsement is wonderful and says a lot to the whole community that I am there, working on entrepreneurial things and immigration — the issues that affect my constituents,” Titus told the Asian Journal, adding that the LVACC has helped help many businesses bounce back after the recent recession. Her district, which she has served since 2013, has hundreds of AAPI-owned businesses, including Filipino supermarket Seafood City. Titus regularly appears at AAPI community events, from ribbon cuttings to cultural festivals. Further, Titus said educational funding is another issue she’s working to address, given that the hardesthit schools are within her territory.
