Report finds Asians in US are healthier than other groups A NeW study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has found that Asian adults – particularly Chinese adults – are physically and psychologically healthier than other Us adults. overall, Chinese adults reported better health in five measures included in the report: likelihood for fair or poor health, chronic conditions, psychological distress, work limitations and limited social participation. the study, based on data from the 2010-2014 National health Interview survey (NhIs), took into account the six largest Asian subgroups: Chinese, filipino, Asian Indian, Japanese, Vietnamese and Korean. for other groups, no clear patterns were observed for the measures. filipino adults fared better than all Us adults in the five measures, although the group was nearly equal to Us adults when it came to a likelihood of having multiple chronic conditions, posting 22.3 percent compared to 24.1

DAVAo CItY—Incoming president rodrigo Duterte is in favor of continuing the enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (eDCA) between the Philippines and the United states due to the limited capabilities of manila’s security forces. eDCA, which was signed by the two countries on April 28, 2014, permits American forces to preposition temporary facilities in Philippine military installations. the deal was questioned before the court by groups who believe that it would violate Philippine sovereignty. the legality of the bilateral agreement was upheld by the supreme Court last January. the high court ruled that eDCA is a valid executive agreement that the president can enter into under the Constitution. some lawmakers, however, believe that Duterte can easily scrap eDCA because it is just an executive agreement, not a treaty approved

by the senate. there are no indications, however, that the next Philippine leader would do away with the deal. “I have no problem with eDCA-sanctioned use of Philippine military bases by Us troops because we don’t have good external defense capabilities,” Duterte said in a press briefing monday night here. the signing of eDCA has been viewed as an effort to counter China’s aggressive actions in the south China sea, where about $5-trillion worth of trade passes through yearly. China has been occupying disputed south China sea areas to assert what it claimed are territorial rights based on history. the Philippines, Vietnam, malaysia, Brunei and taiwan have overlapping claims in the resource-rich area. the Us has repeatedly said that it won’t side with any party of the dispute even as it PAGE A2

Obama tells China: Follow int’l law Aquino on exit: Nothing to fear, worry about

hANoI—Us President Barack obama on tuesday called for territorial disputes in the south China sea to be resolved peacefully and not through bullying as Vietnam balks at Chinese actions in the bitterly contested waters. “Big nations should not bully smaller ones, disputes should be resolved peacefully,” obama told an audience in hanoi, referring to the disputed maritime region. his remarks won loud ap-

plause from more than 2,000 delegates including top Vietnamese leaders. Washington and hanoi have been drawn closer together through their mutual concern at Beijing’s increasing assertiveness in the strategic waterway sea, through which $5 trillion in shipborne trade passes each year. China, which claims almost all the south China sea, has rattled neighbors with a series of reclamation and construction proj-

ects—including airstrips—on reefs and islets. Vietnam and four other countries—the Philippines, malaysia, Brunei and taiwan—also have claims to parts of the sea. freedom to fly, sail the United states takes no position on the competing territorial claims but asserts freedom of navigation and flights in the sea and has sent warships near Chinese-held islets. “As we go forward, the United PAGE A2

Near the end of his six-year term, “I have no cause

for fear or worry,” Aquino said. “I will be leaving behind a citizenry ready to work with able, trustworthy partners like the millennium Challenge Corporation,” he added.
