Appeals court rules against Pres. Trump’s travel ban Three-judge panel uses president’s Twitter against him PRESIDENT Donald Trump and his administration faced yet another defeat in the federal courts this week over his controversial executive order that bans travel from six predominantly Muslim nations. On Monday, June 12, the San Franciscobased United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled that the president was overstepping his authority with this ban, which would suspend U.S. entry to more than 180 million nationals and 110,000 to 50,000 refugees from the six countries. “The President’s authority is subject to certain statutory and constitutional restraints,” the three-judge panel wrote in the court’s ruling. “We conclude that the President, in issuing the Executive Order, exceeded the scope of the authority delegated to him by Congress.” “The Order does not offer a sufficient justification to suspend the entry of more than 180 million people on the basis of nationality.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson
THE United States this week has reaffirmed its support for the Philippines in its efforts to combat terrorism. In a message for the commemoration of the Philippines’ 119th Independence Day on Monday, June 12, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that Washington “proudly stands” with the
Philippines in its anti-terrorism operations in Marawi City in Lanao del Sur, Mindanao. For the past three weeks, the Philippine military has been conducting clearing and rescue operations since the Maute extremist group attacked Marawi City. This has prompted Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte to declare martial law in the Mindanao. Since May 23, the military
has estimated the death toll to be at least 26 civilians, 202 militants, and 58 individuals from the government forces. “The United States proudly stands with the Philippines as a longstanding ally, especially as the country confronts challenges associated with terrorism and extremism, including recent attacks in Marawi City and elsewhere,”

Filipinos among injured Mother of Maute extremist leaders faces rebellion charges in London tower fire THE Philippine Embassy in London has confirmed that Filipinos were among those injured and affected by the massive fire that engulfed the 24-story Grenfell Tower in the British capital on Wednesday, June 14. “A number of them are in the emergency shelters at St Clement’s Church, the St Francis of Assisi Church, and the Portobello Rugby Club on Walmer,” the embassy said in a statement without further specifying the number. As of press time, authorities confirmed 12 casualties but warned the number may rise “during what will be a complex recovery operation over a number of days.”
More than 200 firefighters battled the inferno, which broke out past midnight when most residents were asleep. Witnesses described seeing people jumping out of the tower and children being thrown off the windows with hopes that people from below will catch them. While the cause of fire was still under investigation, residents said they had repeatedly raised concerns over safety risks in the building. “We repeatedly reported concerns to the Tenant Management Organisation of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea including fire safety concerns which were not investigated during the regen-

Philippine Foreign Affairs’ Special Envoy for Intercultural Dialogue Jose de Venecia
PHILIPPINE Foreign Affairs’ Special Envoy for Intercultural Dialogue Jose de Venecia is pitching the prospect of an interfaith dialogue to reduce tensions in Mindanao. In a television interview on Monday, June 12, de Venecia said the interfaith
dialogue will play a “very vital” role in achieving peace despite differences in culture and ideologies. The interfaith dialogue, according to de Venecia, is the “best meeting place for Christians and Muslims,” particularly in addressing the crisis in the war-torn city of Marawi in Lanao del Sur, also called the Muslim Capital of the
Philippines, which is predominantly Catholic. Based on a study conducted by U.S.-based Pew Research Center, about 92.6 percent of Filipinos belonged to Christianity while 5.5 percent to Islam. “It will mobilize the moderate Muslim communities and Christians and begin to isolate the ex-
