US envoy says PH gov’t remains committed to alliance THE Philippine government remains ‘committed’ to its long-standing alliance with the United States. Despite Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s previous antagonistic statements against Washington, U.S. Ambassador Sung Kim reiterated the country’s commitment to its longstanding ally in a recent interview. “My sense is that the Philippines’ government, starting with President Duterte, remains committed to the relationship. There’s mutual respect for the relationship and mutual appreciation for the importance of the relationship,” Kim told ANC. Duterte has been constantly lashing out against the U.S. government for its supposed interference with Philippine affairs, particu-

DAVAO CITY — Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte addressed about 200 Filipino-American visitors in this city on Friday, July 14, urging them to be “ambassadors” bearing the message of change under his administration. Despite various travel advisories and the recent pronouncement of martial law in Mindanao, Fil-Ams from across the United States came to the Philippines this week for the 11th Ambassadors’ Tour, which highlighted attractions in Manila and Davao. “May you become Filipino ambassadors who shall carry a fresh perspective of the new and improved Philippines when you go back to the United States,” Duterte said during the dinner reception held at the SMX Convention Center. The six-day Ambassadors’ Tour — which was organized by the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the Department of Tourism (DOT), the Tourism Promotions Board, and Rajah Tours — brought Fil-Ams from Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York,

FOR the affected Marawi residents, extending martial law means extending their adversities of being away from home. Thousands of Marawi residents had to stay in evacuation camps since the Maute extremist group launched an attack on the city two months ago, which prompted Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte to impose military rule in the entire Mindanao under his Proclamation No. 216. Earlier this week, Duterte requested Congress to extend the proclamation until the end of the year, saying that the “existing rebellion in Mindanao” will “not be quelled completely” by its legal expiration on July 22. “It’s difficult on our part. TWELVE lawmakers from the European Union (EU) are in the Philippines to check the “political and human rights” situation in the country. Soraya Post, the EU delegation head, called their visit a “fact-sharing mission.” “We are very interested in the development of the situation of human rights in the Philippines. So we would like to have a meeting with different stakeholders in the Philippines,” Post told reporters on Tuesday, July 18. She cited the reported killings linked to Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s controversial crackdown on narcotics, as well as his administration’s bid to lower the age of criminal responsibility from 15 to 9 years old. “So we want to speak about this, to discuss the development of the

THE Court of Appeals (CA) has junked the petition of a group seeking the enforcement of a 1995 United States district court decision awarding the supposed human rights victims during the term of late strongman Ferdinand Marcos of about $2 billion worth of compensation. In its July 7 decision, the CA’s 12th Division upheld the earlier decision of Makati City Regional Trial Court (RTC) which dismissed the case seeking the enforcement of the foreign ruling. The petition was filed by a group led by retired Judge Priscilla Mijares, Former Human Rights Commission Chairman Loreta Ann Rosales, movie director Joel Lamangan, Hilda Narciso, and Mariano Dimaranan. The CA decision, penned by Associate Justice Normandie Pizarro, affirmed the RTC’s decision
