Robredo denies existence of US blueprint to oust Duterte by DANA

SIOSON AJPress

PHILIPPINE Vice President Leni Robredo on Wednesday, January 4, said she does not believe the existence of a “blueprint” allegedly left by former United States Ambassador to the Philippines Philip Goldberg that outlines plans to oust President

Rodrigo Duterte. “Ako, hindi ako naniniwala na mayroong ganoon (I do not believe that it exists),” Robredo said in an interview during her visit to Tiwi, Albay. In its earlier report, The Manila Times, citing a “highly placed source,” said Goldberg supposedly left behind a “blueprint to undermine Duterte.”

According to the report, among the ouster tactics Goldberg allegedly suggested include the support for “Robredo-led opposition groups” and fueling public dissatisfaction with the president. In a statement, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Russel said that “[t]hese allegations of a blueprint are false.”

“No such blueprint exists,” Russel stressed. He also reiterated that the United States’ relationship with the Philippines is “one of our most enduring and important relationships in the Asia-Pacific region.” “It has been a cornerstone of stability for over 70 years. It is built on shared sacrifices for democracy and human rights and

strong people-to-people and societal ties. We continue to focus on our broad relationship with the Philippines, and will work together in the many areas of mutual interest to improve the livelihoods of the Philippine people and uphold our shared democratic values,” Russel added. Malacañang, meanwhile, downplayed the rumors that the

DATELINE 115th Congress sworn in, agenda targets Obama initiatives

by DANA

FROM THE AJPRESS NEWS TEAM ACROSS AMERICA

THE United States’ 115th Congress was sworn into office on Tuesday, January 3, ushering a GOP-controlled Legislative Branch. Thirty-four senators and the entire House of Representatives was sworn in, including Speaker of the House Sen. Paul Ryan (RWisconsin). Once President-elect Donald Trump is inaugurated on January 20, the GOP will be in control of both the Executive and Legislative branches —the first time in a decade. That being said, the future of several key initiatives from President Barack Obama look bleak, especially the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare. The dismantling of Obamacare — which has been a fixture in the Republican agenda since Obama entered office in 2008 — is likely to happen after Republican lawmakers announced a bill that may repeal the law within the next month. Democrats fear that repealing Obamacare will leave millions of Americans without health care. Although the future of ObamPAGE A3

THE Philippine Department of Finance (DOF) is bullish that the country will maintain its high economic growth in 2017 despite the political noise during the first six months of the Duterte administration. Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III said the government is optimistic that the country’s economic growth remained “on the upswing on the back of rock-solid macroeconomic fundamentals.” “This means there will be no letup in the Duterte administration’s commitment to spending big on urban and rural infrastructure as a growth driver, to guarantee sustained high and inclusive growth,” Dominguez said in

a statement. The Philippine government said it is expecting the economy to grow between 6.5 percent and 7.5 percent in 2017. “So if we manage to grow by 7 percent, we become the fastest-growing country in the fastest-growing region in the world and that’s an honor, right? And that would be an accomplishment,” Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno told reporters. The DOF said credit raters and other international institutions, such as S&P Global, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), also share this rosy economic outlook on the Philippines. Here is our roundup of top issues and events — broken down by month — that have dominated the front pages of our six editions: January PH Supreme Court rules EDCA constitutional The Philippine Supreme Court on Tuesday, Jan. 12, upheld the constitutionality of an executive agreement between the Philippines and the United States that permits increased rotational presence of US military troops in the country. In a 10-4-1 vote, the top court ruled in favor of the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), which was signed by the Philippines and U.S. in 2014 but was not implemented due to legal challenges. The agreement, which has a 10-year lifespan, also allows U.S. troops access to Philippine military bases. The decision comes amid the ongoing dispute between the Philippines and China regarding conflicting claims in the South China Sea. It was later followed by a Grand Homecoming Parade on January 25, where she received a warm welcome from her fans and thousands of fellow Filipinos. mophobic statements Filipino boxing champ Manny Pacquiao apologized on Tuesday, Feb. 16 after he said that those who are in same-sex relationships are “worse than animals.” In an interview with TV5 network, Pacquiao — who ran in the Senate under the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) party — was asked to share his views on same-sex marriage. Responding to the backlash, Pacquiao issued an apology on social media for his remarks, saying he was “just telling the truth of what the Bible says,” however, he said his stance on same-sex marriage remains unchanged.
