US Navy begins ‘routine’ patrols in the South China Sea A UNIteD states aircraft carrier strike group began patrolling the contested areas in the south China sea over the weekend. the U.s. Carrier strike Group (CsG) 1 — which is part of the U.s. Navy — launched its first routine operations in the contested waters on saturday, february 18. It deployed aircraft carrier Uss Carl Vinson, along with guided-missile destroyer Uss Wayne e. meyer, and aircraft from Carrier Air Wing 2. Beijing previously said it has respected the freedom of navigation and over flight in the south China sea. however, it “firmly opposes any country’s attempt to undermine China’s sovereignty and security in the name of the freedom of navigation and overflight.” “We also urge the U.s. to refrain from challenging China’s sovereignty and security and to respect regional countries’ efforts to maintain peace and stability in the south China sea,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng shuang said.
