proposal to cut legal immigration programs Trump, GOP senators rally behind bill that would eliminate family-based petitioning
ACTING on a crucial campaign goal, President Donald Trump on Wednesday, August 2 backed proposed legislation that would eliminate the current family-based immigration system into a more “merit-based” one that favors applicants’ skills and employability. Trump stood with the bill’s co-authors, Republican Sens. Tom Cotton (Ark.) and David Perdue (Ga.), at the White House to announce a bill that would judge applicants for legal residency based on what they can offer to the U.S. as workers. This bill is a modified version of a bill first introduced in April that proposed to slash immigration by half from more than 1 million green cards issued per year and judge applicants

THE United States does not see any contradiction between its anti-terrorism assistance to the Philippine government and its human rights concerns in connection with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s anti-illegal drugs campaign. U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson pointed out that helping the Philippines to combat terrorism, particularly against the Islamic State (IS)affiliate that attacked Marawi City in Mindanao, is part of Washington’s “national security interest.” FRIEND AND ALLY. In a press briefing, the American diplomat called the attack in Marawi as a “tragic situation” but added that the Philippine forces are “beginning to get that situation under control.” The fight has been ongoing since the IS-linked Maute rebel group attacked Marawi City on May 23, result-

Washington warns N. Korea: US could unleash ‘fire and fury’ Secretaries Mattis, Tillerson clarify comments, emphasize importance of diplomacy
AS a way to make a point to the Democratic People’s Republic Of Korea (DPRK), President Donald Trump on Tuesday, August 8 warned North Korea that if the country continues provoking the United States, it will not get away with it. During a photo op at his Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, the president escalated the long-standing hostility between the two nations when he declared, “North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States.” He added: “They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen... he has been very threatening beyond a normal state. They will be met with fire, fury and frankly power the likes of which this world has never seen before.” Trump’s jarring statements are likely a response to recent findings from U.S. intelligence that concluded that North Korea has produced a nuclear warhead that can fit on long-range

PHILIPPINE President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday, August 9, reiterated his vow to step down from his seat if his son, Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte is proven guilty of committing corrupt practices. In his speech at a business forum held in Mandaluyong City, Duterte stressed that he does not condone corruption, adding that he would not hesitate to fire anyone involved in the act.
“Corruption was really one I do not like. Now, even my son is being dragged in the Customs controversy,” Duterte said. He then stressed, “I told you before and I’m telling you now again, if any of my children is involved in corruption, I will immediately resign. You have my word.” The president’s statement came days after Customs broker Mark Taguba mentioned his son’s name in a House of Representatives inquiry on Monday, August 7, into the alleged bribery activities within the Bureau of
Customs (BOC). Congress is currently investigating the alleged involvement of BOC officials in the 600-kilogram shipment of shabu worth P6.4 billion (US$126 million) that slipped through the agency’s express lane last May. During the inquiry, Taguba said he was giving P10,000 as bribe per container to certain a “Tita Nanie,” who told him that the money would go to a “Davao group” backed by the city’s vice mayor.

THE estranged wife of Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Andres Bautista said she only wants half of his husband’s ‘clean’ money for settlement. “Let me make it clear: by law, I’m entitled to half of what Andy owns but I want only of what is clean. This is why I’m bringing this to the government to tell me which part is clean,” Bautista’s wife, Patricia, told ANC on Tuesday, August 8. Last week, Patricia submitted an affidavit before the National Bureau of Investigations (NBI), alleging that her husband has nearly one billion pesos of ‘unexplained’ wealth that were not included in his 2016 statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN). “I will get one half of what is clean. I would not do all of these and then get into the muck as well with all of these. I want a clean break,” she added. According to an Inquirer report, Patricia, in her affidavit, said her husband “might have had, or currently has, misdealing and corrupt practices while in government service.”
