Community leaders stress importance of applying for citizenship

AS the Trump administration continues to propose major reforms on immigration, a growing concern looms over the United States, leaving millions of undocumented immigrants unsure of their futures. Amid all the worry and anxiety among immigrants — regardless of legal status — legal experts and lawmakers alike encourage all eligible immigrants to consider their options, including applying for citizenship. “Many people have been wondering if it’s safe to apply for citizenship. Well we’re here with a

A FEDERAL judge in San Francisco on Tuesday, April 25 blocked a portion of President Donald Trump’s executive order that called for denying funds to areas that defy U.S. immigration authorities. U.S. District Judge William Orrick ruled that the Trump administration could not impose restrictions on the so-called sanctuary jurisdictions that have policies to protect undocumented immigrants, given that the president does not have the authority to dictate new federal spending policies. “Federal funding that bears no meaningful relationship to immigration enforcement cannot be threatened merely because a jurisdiction chooses an immigration enforcement strategy of which the president disapproves, Orrick wrote in his decision to the lawsuit filed by the City and County of San Francisco and Santa Clara County, which argued that over $2 billion in federal funding was in question. On January 25, Trump signed an executive order — “Enhancing the Public Safety in the In-

In his complaint, Sabio accused Duterte of masterminding mass murders “repeatedly, unchangingly, and continuously in the Philippines, citing the alleged murders of over 1,400 people by the so-called Davao Death Squad (DDS) during his term as Davao City mayor. Matobato, Sabio’s client, testified before a Senate inquiry last year in which he confirmed the existence of the DDS. A gROUP of Democratic senators is calling for the continuation of a program that allows Filipino World War II veterans to be reunited with their families in the United States, amid reports that the Trump administration is reviewing immigration parole policies. In a letter addressed to President Donald Trump on Wednesday, April 26, Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Mazie K. Hirono (D-Hawaii), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), and Kamala Harris (DCalif.) said that less than 6,000 Filipinos World War II veterans — of the 260,000 who fought — are living in the United States today and are increasingly in need of assistance from their relatives. Some of the veterans have petitioned family members from the Philippines to join them in the United States; however, wait times can last years, often times exceeding 20 years, due to statutory visa caps. Under the administration of

former President Barack Obama, the Filipino World War II Veterans Parole (FWVP) program was introduced in July 2015, which states that on a case-by-case basis, certain family members could be eligible to come to the U.S. to provide support and care for aging Filipino veterans who are U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents. Once in the country, the beneficiaries could apply for work authorization.
