WITNESSES heard a loud bang and saw smoke drift away from the site of an explosion that tore through a crowded market on Friday, September 2 in Davao, the hometown of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. At least 14 people died as a result of a blast that wounded about 67 others on Roxas Street near the Marco Polo, a hotel frequented by Duterte, according to GMA News and other

sources as of press time. Some reports describe the tragedy as a bombing, but other explanations have not been entirely ruled out. Representatives from the Explosive Ordinance Division (EOD) of the Davao City Police have not yet issued an official statement. “Rest assured the authorities are on top of this incident,” said Davao City Vice Mayor, and the president’s son, Paolo Duterte in a message to citizens on Friday. “Maybe tomorrow may answers na tayo from the EOD

and the bomb squad (Maybe tomorrow we will have answers from the EOD and the bomb squad).” However, evidence gathered from the scene support the possibility that Friday’s carnage was caused by a bomb, according to Malacañang representatives. “Initial investigations show they found shrapnel from a mortar-based improvised explosive device,” Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar told DZMM radio on

Fil-Am fugitive wanted for Tucson murder hiding in PH

A FILIPINO-AMERICAN accused of fatally shooting a man during a house party in Tucson, Arizona, 16 years ago remains at large after fleeing to the Philippines. Police hope the public might have information leading to the capture of Anthony Burroughs, who was last seen at a strip club in Metro Manila, according to sources for CNN’s “The Hunt with John Walsh.” The 5’7”, 200 lb 37-year-old, who has his last name tattooed on his back, fled the U.S. after allegedly killing Ruben Rodriguez on April 29, 2000. “I was told it was over a girl,” Rodriguez’s ex-girlfriend, Melinda Ochoa told CNN. Witnesses say the two men met for the first time that night and wound up trading blows. After the fistfight, Rodriguez had reportedly helped Burroughs get up from the ground and was then shot in the shoulder as he walked away from the suspect, according to Ochoa. The wound destroyed the victim’s carotid artery, according to Tucson Police

Fil-Am lawmaker urges criminal justice reform in CA

ONE of the issues most important to Assemblymember Rob Bonta is reforming California’s criminal justice system. In July, Bonta — the first Filipino-American in the state’s Legislature — took action. As chair of the Select Committee on Boys and Men of Color, he gathered lawmakers, academics, community leaders and ex-convicts to discuss the shortcomings of the state’s criminal justi ce, paying particular attention to the state’s bail system. “In my view, it’s not a question of if the system needs to be reformed, it’s a question of how,” Bonta said in a hearing on July 6. When an individual is arrested, they may be required to pay the court a certain amount of money — called bail — in exchange for release. This relies on the grounds that the individual shows up to court for a trial. The bail system was established to reduce court absences, but critics, including Bonta, say that bail puts a premium on poor people who can’t afford bail. “If you are poor and can’t pay bail, you will sit in jail even if your violation is something as minor as a traffic ticket and you’re not a

THE August arrest of two suspected gun smugglers foiled an alleged plot to assassinate President Rodrigo Duterte, the Philippine National Police (PNP) announced on Thursday, September 1. The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) had arrested the suspects identified as Bryan Ta-ala and Wilford Palma on Saturday, August 6 for reportedly smuggling about P4.5 million worth of gun components from the United States into Bacolod City, according to Inquirer. Palma told reporters in Quezon City on Thursday that Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump delivers an immigration speech on Wednesday night, August 31 in Phoenix, Arizona. Hours before the remarks, he met with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto. Photo taken from Donald Trump’s official Instagram account

BUILD a wall. Curb undocumented immigration. End sanctuary cities. Implement an extreme vetting process. In his anticipated immigration speech in Phoenix, Arizona on Wednesday night, August 31, these were some of the policies Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said

would help “take our country back.” “When politicians talk about immigration reform, they usually mean the following: amnesty, open borders, and lower wages,” Trump said. “Immigration reform should mean something else entirely: it should mean improvements to our laws and policies to make life better for American citizens.” The issue of immigration —

particularly undocumented immigration, which Trump said is “one of the greatest challenges” the country faces — has been a bedrock of the real estate billionaire’s campaign. In announcing his candidacy last year, he mentioned that Mexican immigrants were “rapists” and “bringing drugs” into the United States. Following the attack in San

TWO internationally-renowned Filipino boxing champions will be fighting at the same event on November 5 in Las Vegas. In an ABS-CBN report, boxing promoter Bob Arum announced that Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. will fight against Jessie Magdaleno at the co-main event of Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao’s comeback fight. “We are looking to do something really spectacular for all Filipino people,” Arum said. Donaire will defend the crown against Magdaleno after reclaiming his WBO super bantamweight title last December, following a unanimous verdict over Cesar Juarez. Earlier this April, he defended his belt after coming off a TKO win Hungarian Olympian Zsolt Bedak in the third round.
