PNP: 6,225 drug war deaths, but no EJKs by DANA
SIOSON AJPress
MANILA - The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday, October 6 claimed that there has not been a single case of extrajudicial killing related to the anti-illegal drug campaign of President Rodrigo Duterte. PNP spokesman Chief Superintendent Dionardo Carlos retracted his earlier statement that there has only been one case of extrajudicial killing since the so-called drug war was launched on July 1 of last year. He omitted the case of Larry Que, a Catanduanes-based journalist who was shot dead on December 19, 2016. “The PNP protects every individual’s right to life. To allay or remove their fear, let it be known that under the present administration, there is only one case of extrajudicial

killing or EJK for the period July 1, 2016 to September 30, 2017,” the PNP initially said. In a “corrected” statement, however, Carlos clarified that the case of Que is not yet a confirmed case of extrajudicial killing. The PNP made the statement in response to a recent Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey which showed that 73 percent of Filipinos fear that they may become drug war victims. The drug war has been highly criticized by human rights advocates and organizations, both local and abroad, over the alleged thousands of abuses and spate of summary killings. The administration, for its part, has repeatedly claimed that drug suspects were killed during legitimate police operations

Motive of Las Vegas shooter remains a mystery as investigations continue Filipina girlfriend had no knowledge of plan by RAE
ANN VARONA AJPress
ALMOST a week since the incident, what led 64-year-old Stephen Paddock to fire bullets over the 22,000 attendees of the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas remains a mystery. The country music festival, which was ending it third and last day of weekend festivities, instead resulted in 59 deaths, and close to 500 injuries, making it the worst shooting attack in modern U.S. history.
Paddock’s Filipina girlfriend, Marilou Danley — whom investigators hoped would shed some light — said she had no knowledge of his plan when meeting with FBI on Wednesday, October 4. “There’s all kinds of things that surprise us in each one of these events. That’s the one in this one, and we are not there yet,” said FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe. “We have a lot of work to do.” “This individual and this attack didn’t leave President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump visit patient Clint Burton of Gillette, the sort of immediately accessible thumb- Wyoming, and members of his family on Wednesday, October 4 at the University Medical Center

MALACAÑANG will question before the Supreme Court the Office of the Ombudsman’s move to investigate President Rodrigo Duterte for ill-gotten wealth. Speaking to reporters, Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo said the investigation by the Ombudsman on Duterte’s wealth was “unconstitutional.” “My theory now is that the Ombudsman’s investigation currently of the President is unconstitutional even if there is a provision in the Ombudsman’s law that it has investigatory power, because to my mind, it will circumvent the doctrine of immunity of a sitting president from suits,” Panelo said in a news conference. He also said Duterte could not

Marcos confident to win poll protest, replace Robredo as VP
SINCE Philippine Rodrigo Duterte’s entrance into office on June 30, 2016, his antidrug campaign has claimed the lives of thousands of drug suspects. Committed by “legitimate police operations” and masked vigilantes, the extra-judicial killings (EJK) has been a controversial topic that has angered human rights activists and government officials in the Philippines and the world over. One key figure in the fight against the EJKs is Philippine Bishop Pablo “Ambo” David of the Diocese of Caloocan who found himself

THE World Bank on Thursday, October 5, has lowered anew its forecast for the Philippines’ economic growth. In the October edition of its East Asia and Pacific Economic Update, the international financial institution downgraded the economic growth outlook for the Philippines this year to 6.6 percent from the 6.8 percent in forecast last July—both lower than the earlier 6.9 percent in April. The World Bank also trimmed the Philippines’ GDP (gross domestic product) forecast for 2018 to 6.7 percent, from 6.9 percent in July and April. “The Philippine economy had a slower start in 2017 compared to 2016, when government’s election-related spending and front-loaded private investment fueled growth in the 1st half of the year,” the World Bank said in its report. It cited delays in fiscal spending program as among the factors that contributed to the slower growth projection. “The delay in the anticipated push of the planned government infrastructure program has been contributing to the moderation of fixed capital formation growth, softening the growth prospect for the year,” the bank noted. Despite the latest cuts, World Bank also maintained that the medium-term outlook for the Philippines remains positive. The Philippines is also expected to remain the fastest
