Obamacare premiums to increase in 2017
PREMIUMS for health care plans under President Barack Obama’s Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will rise 22 percent for mid-level plans in 2017, according to a recent report from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). HHS Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell defended the program and the premium hike on CNN, saying that controversial law — commonly known as Obamacare — has had a record of benefiting all Americans. “The Affordable Care Act was about three fundamental things — access, affordability and quality. It was about everybody, not just the uninsured,” she said on Wednesday, October 26. According to the report, the premium hike won’t affect 84 percent of Americans who receive help from government subsidies, which will also increase. Moreover, many Americans enrolled with Obamacare receive tax

THE abrasive President Rodrigo Duterte has vowed to put an end to his signature vulgar language, saying he received a warning from the Lord. While on a flight back to Davao City from Japan, Duterte recalled looking out at the skies while everyone else was sleeping and heard a voice saying, “You know, if you don’t stop epithets, I will bring this plane down now.” “And I said, ‘who is this?’ So, of course, it’s God,” Duterte said in a press conference after landing in Davao City on Thursday, October 27. “So, I promise God...not to express slang, cuss words and everything.” Consequently, not a swear word was ut-
tered in the hour-long press conference. Although he didn’t indicate he would stop cursing cold turkey, he said that he would seize swearing in public. “There’s always a time for everything, a time to be foul-mouthed. It’s all calibrated. I don’t want anybody reading my mind dahil hindi na ako maka-diskarte (I don’t want to telegraph my punches),” he told the media. Duterte’s foreign affairs advisor Alan Peter Cayetano said that the president seemed exhausted and contemplative during the flight. “I’ve always felt he’s a deeply spiritual person,” Cayetano told Reuters. “He’s not religious, but he believes in God.” Duterte’s trademark use of obscenities

HOUSE and Senate bills seeking to create the first Space Agency in the Philippines have been filed, Filipino astrophysicist Dr.Rogel Mari Sese announced last Tuesday, October 25. “All the work that we have done in the past few years for the development of a national space program amounts to these two documents,” Sese said on his Facebook account, referring to the House Bill 3637 and Senate Bill 1211. According to him, both the bills aim to “legislate a Philippine Space Development and Utilization Policy and create a Philippine Space Agency.” The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) will be, according to the Senate bill’s explanatory note, “responsible for developing space science technology policies, implementing research and education programs, and establishing industry linkages between private and public sector stakeholders.” “Its consolidated programs and strategies for space science and technology, will pave the way for future Filipino astronomers, space scientists, and astronauts by laying down a strong foundation in space science education and research,” the note added. The Senate bill was filed by Senator Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV. On the other hand, the House bill was filed by Bohol 2nd District Representative Erico Aristotle Aumentado and Zamboanga del Norte 1st Dis-

New batch of US troops arrives in Mindanao by DANA
SIOSON AJPress
A NEW batch of American soldiers arrived in Zamboanga City “a few days ago” despite President Rodrigo Duterte’s remarks against the foreign military presence in the country. The U.S. troops’ arrival is part of a “mere regular rotation,” Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla, spokesman of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), said on Wednesday, October 26. “They (America) have troops that need to be rotated,” Padilla said.
According to him, the number of U.S. forces in Mindanao remains the same. Regarding how many soldiers were rotated, however, was not disclosed. “They requested diplomatic clearance before entering. The Americans respect our processes, they sought permission,” he remarked. Speaking before the Japanese community earlier this week, Duterte expressed his desire to free the Philippines from the presence of foreign ZAMBOANGA MISSION: Some 50 US soldiers on formation witness the ceremonial folding of the flag of the military troops in the next two years.
