SECURITY and trade relations are among the top issues to be discussed at the upcoming bilateral meeting between Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and United States President Donald Trump in Manila. According to Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, the two top leaders are slated to meet on the
sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) conference next month. In a chance interview on Wednesday, October 25, Cayetano said Duterte and Trump would discuss the threats posed by terrorism and illegal drugs to the public. “What’s the fundamental interest, intersecting interest of America and the Philippines? First is security…which includes terrorism and drugs, the threat
of terrorism and illegal drugs. Secondly, trade. So if you have security but the people are hungry, it’s useless,” Cayetano disclosed. The top diplomat added that the U.S. government is also seeking a free trade agreement with the Philippines. “They’re negotiating many regional and multilateral trade agreements but there’s a possibility that we will explore a bilateral agreement,” he said.
