US to support PH under any president the United states has vowed to continue its support to the Philippines under any president. speaking before the local business community in a forum yesterday, former Us ambassador to the Philippines and Us-Philippines society co-chairman John Negroponte assured the country of continued American support in trade, investment and security. “With solid foundation taking place, we see every reason for new leaders in both the Philippines and the Us to commit to more progress as partners in trade and investment, peace and stability, innovation and people-topeople exchange. Let me assure you we will continue to do our part,” Negroponte said. Both the Philippines and the Us are changing their respective presidents this year. President-elect rodrigo Duterte will be inaugurated as the 16th president of the Philippines on June 30 while the American presidential elections will be held in November. “there is much to build on as we move forward. the Philippines has been on an upward trajectory with steady high rates of economic growth and commitment to good governance, development and enhanced security. Supreme Court arrives at deadlocked decision on Obama’s immigration orders by Eric anD

the supreme Court arrived at a deadlocked decision on President Barack obama’s contested immigration policies on thursday, June 23, leaving the fate of as many as 5 million undocumented immigrants in the U.s. uncertain. A 4-4 vote delays definitive judgment on the matter and leaves in place a ruling from a lower court that blocks
the president’s executive order. A tie would not have happened if not for a vacant ninth seat on the bench left by former Justice Antonin scalia, who passed away in february. “this is a consequence of the republican failure, so far, to give a fair hearing to mr. merrick Garland, my nominee to the supreme Court,” said obama during a press conference at the White house on thursday. the split ruling halts the implementation of the Deferred Action for Parents of Us Citizens and Lawful Perma-
nent residents (DAPA) program, and expansions to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, but does not establish legal precedent for future cases. In 2013, a bipartisan bill passed the senate, which would have offered undocumented immigrants a pathway to citizenship while doubling the Border Patrol. the GoP-controlled house of representatives, however, refused to bring it to a vote. Bypassing Congress, obama then introduced a series of executive ac-

the U.s. supreme Court unexpectedly ruled in favor of upholding the University of texas’s race-conscious policies on thursday, June 23, a ruling that has already been dubbed a landmark case for affirmative action. the case in question was fisher v. University of texas at Austin, which centered on Abigail fisher’s claim that Ut Austin unfairly rejected her because she is white. she argued their use of race as a factor for consideration violated the equal protections clause of the fourteenth Amendment. the supreme Court ruled that Ut Austin’s use of race as one of many factors of consideration in their admissions process was constitutional and was a “narrowly tailored” means to promote racial diversity in its student body. “Considerable deference is owed to a university in defining those intangible characteristics, like student body diversity, that are central to its identity and educational mission,” Justice Anthony m. Kennedy wrote in the Court’s majority opinion. Justices ruth Bader Ginsburg, sonia sotomayor and stephen G. Breyer also voted in
tions in November 2014 — including DAPA and expanded DACA — which would have granted work authorization and protection from deportation to nearly 5 million undocumented immigrants. “for more than two decades now, our immigration system, everyone acknowledges, has been broken,” said the president. “the fact that the supreme Court wasn’t able to issue a decision [thursday] doesn’t just set the system back even further; it takes us

In a statement less than 10 minutes before U.s. markets opened on friday, June 24, President Barack obama said, “the people of the United Kingdom have spoken, and we respect their decision.” “the United Kingdom and the european Union will remain indispensable partners of the United states even as they begin negotiating their ongoing re-

the Islamic state (also known as IsIs) released its first propaganda video for the Philippines, persuading muslims to unite and wage war against the Philippine government and non-muslim people. “Kaya kapatid ko, ‘wag kang mag-alinlangan. Abu sayyaf is one of the smallest and violent jihadist groups in the southern Philippines. reports from The Manila Times stated that the group had “officially” pledged an allegiance to the caliph of the Islamic state of Iraq and syria earlier this year. the unidentified man in the video also called war against the national government and told fellow fighters to be wary of President-elect rodrigo Duterte and his ‘deceptive’ tactics. however, the Philippine military denounced the vid-
