WAShINGTON -- The sporadic rain wasn’t enough to deter nearly 1 million individuals from flocking to the National Mall to witness firsthand the inauguration of Donald J. Trump as the United States’ 45th president. After taking the oath of office — which was officiated by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts using a Trump family bible and one that

belonged to former President Abraham Lincoln — Trump delivered his inaugural address, which laid out key issues his administration would focus on and employed the familiar rhetoric from his various campaign remarks. “We, the citizens of America, are now joined in a great national effort to rebuild our country and to restore its promise for all of our people,” Trump began his roughly 16-minute speech. “Together, we will determine the course of America and the world for years to

Community organizations gear up to help undocumented Filipinos amid new administration WITh President-elect Donald Trump officially taking office this week, community organizations across Southern California have been preparing to safeguard undocumented Filipinos who may be subject to deportation. Trump, who was inaugurated on Friday, January 20, gained traction during the presidential campaign for his strict immigration proposals, such as building a wall along the United States-Mexico border and imposing an ideology test for future immigrants coming into the country. In the Filipino-American community, many have not forgotten comments the real estate billionaire made last summer that seemed to suggest a ban on immigration from areas with high rates of terrorism, including the Philippines. The extent of how far the 45th president will carry out his campaign promises remains to be seen, however. “The biggest concern is that the rhetoric is starting to really go beyond just the Latino

come. We will face challenges. We will confront hardships. But we will get the job done.” however, instead of throwing praises for the federal government, he strayed away from usual addresses of past presidents by noting that his administration would signal a power shift in Washington. “Today’s ceremony, however, has very special meaning. Because today we are not merely transferring power from one Administration to another,

WAShINGTON — On the eve of the inauguration, over 800 Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) gathered at the Mayflower hotel to celebrate their contributions to the election of incoming President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence. The gala on Thursday night, January 19, which was organized in part by the campaign’s Asian Pacific American Advisory Committee, featured cuisine and entertainment from various Asian cultures, as well as speeches from various elected officials. “We may all be different in culture, we may come from different regions of the United States and the territories, but I see a similarity: it’s a belief in strong faith, in family, in strong communities,” Eddie Calvo, the governor of Guam, said. “And then at the same time, hon-

Taking a more serious, gloomy tone, the 45th president mentioned the pitfalls of American society affected by drug abuse, poverty, and crime. he touched upon vows to restore jobs and the middle class, defeat “radical Islamic terrorism,” and secure the borders — all talking points he heavily touted throughout his campaign. “We will follow two simple rules: Buy American and hire American,” he

NORMA was only supposed to work as a relief caregiver when she was petitioned to come to the United States from the Philippines to look after an elderly woman suffering from cancer. however, it wasn’t long before she became her charge’s primary aid. That wasn’t just because she was a hard worker, and it certainly wasn’t the result of a healthy relationship with the people she served. Norma said it was because no other caregivers were willing to put up with the abusive treatment of this particular patient and her family. “I thought I was only going to work for one patient, but at the end of the day I had two, mother and son,” said Norma, who spoke to the Asian Journal under a pseudonym due to concerns regarding her immigration status. She added that, for three months, she had spent “almost 24 hours a day” on her feet and slept “three hours a day.” In addition to her regular duties, Norma also found herself at the beck and call of the elderly woman’s son, who operated on a nocturnal schedule and would insist that the Filipina caregiver cook and clean for him at odd hours of the night. SINCE Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s entrance into office, he has has been the recipient of criticism in the international media for his controversial statements and brash language. Most recently, Duterte received international attention after many publications reported that he Secretary Martin Andanar suggested he would declare martial law. Shortly after Secretary of Presidential Communications Operations Martin Andanar clarified his statements saying that Duterte meant that if the illegal drug epidemic and growing terrorism persists in the country, he may impose martial law. Andanar added that the media’s mishandling of the statement was a product of “irresponsible” journalism, a statement which angered the National Union of Journalists in the Philippines (NUJP). As an effort to establish a close relationship with the media, Andanar on Tuesday, January 17, made a stop in Los Angeles before heading to Washington, D.C., meeting with a small number of Fil-Am news outlets to discuss and clarify a number of issues.
