DATELINE LA Mayor’s office hosts roundtable for immigration assistance initiative FROM THE AJPRESS NEWS TEAM AcroSS AMEricA
LOS ANGELES —The impact of the immigrant workforce is significant, especially in Los Angeles County, which is home to approximately 3.5 million immigrants, according to a University of Southern California (USC) study. Additionally, immigrants are responsible for about 40 percent of the LA area’s gross domestic product (GDP), according to Manuel Pastor, director of USC’s Center for the Study of Immigrant Integration. However, many immigrants are hesitant to go forth with the pathway to citizenship due its laborious and lengthy process, uncertainty of the outcomes and other scores of fears associated with the naturalization system. Initiatives like the New American Workforce (NAW) — a project from the National Immigration Forum that encourages businesses to assist and guide their immigrant workers with the naturalization process — have made resources and assistance more easily available to eligible immigrant employees.

The complexity of the Asian American electorate
ASIAN Americans are the fastest-growing demographic in the United States. In the last five years, the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community increased by 19 percent, according to the United States Census Bureau. And it’s not stopping there. A recent UCLA study reported that by 2040, the AAPI voter population in the U.S. is projected to double with an expected population of 12.2 million. Current naturalization trends can explain this phenomenon as hordes of Asian immigrants are making their way to the U.S. Since 2012, approximately 60 percent of newly eligible AAPI individuals have gained the right to vote, meaning that the 2016 election will have the most diverse electorate by far, according to a 2016 report from Pew Research Center. With the AAPI community growing exponentially, there’s no doubt that their presence at the polls later this year will be crucial. Both the Democratic and Republican parties have announced efforts to further engage with the AAPI community, but their needs are still not adequately addressed. The multicultural pool of the AAPI community is a major drawback. The Asian community is comprised of hundreds of cultures, ethnicities, nationalities and identities — it would

Trump: ‘Extreme vetting’ needed for immigrants to US by ChriStina
He went on to cite examples of terrorist attacks on U.S. soil — including the Boston Marathon bombings and the San Bernardino and Orlando mass shootings — and abroad. To defeat ISIS, Trump proposed a “new immigration policy” with “new screening procedures,” similar to the ideological screening test used during the Cold War era. “A Trump Administration will establish a clear principle that will govern all decisions pertaining to immigration: we should only admit into this country those who

REPUBLICAN presidential nominee Donald Trump on Monday, August 15 proposed a “new screening test” for immigrants seeking to enter the United States. Delivering a foreign policy address in Youngstown, Ohio, Trump echoed the call for stricter immigration — a cornerstone of his campaign — and reiterated his belief that “radical Islamic terrorism” is the biggest threat the world faces today.
share our values and respect our people,” he described. The screening test would question how potential immigrants align with American values. It is intended to weed “all members or sympathizers of terrorist groups” as well as those who have “hostile attitudes towards our country or its principles.” “I call it extreme, extreme vetting. Our country has enough problems. We don’t need more. And these are problems like we’ve never seen before,” he said.

VICE President Leni Robredo on Monday, August 15, asked the Supreme Court (SC) to dismiss the electoral protest filed against her by the defeated former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

DESPITE criticism for allegedly dishonoring human rights, the “war against drugs” has lowered the country’s crime index in the first month since President Rodrigo Duterte took office. Solution to Metro Manila traffic? Duterte to pursue subway projects by Dana
SioSon AJPress
PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte will pursue subway projects as part of the plan to ease Metro Manila traffic congestion, Transportation Undersecretary for Rails and Toll Roads Noel Kintanar said on Tuesday, August 16. “If we plan this well, the commuter will be given choice, and by that, we can distribute congestion rather than concentrate it on one or two lines,” Kintanar told “Gridlock: An ANC Forum on the Transportation Crisis.” According to Kintanar, the subway will be connected to Metro Manila’s other transportation systems, including Metro Rail Transit Line 3 on EDSA, and Line 1 and 2 of the Light Rail Transit Line. He added that the government is considering to build it under a public-private partnership.

DOJ orders murder raps against Mamasapano massacre suspects by Dana
SioSon AJPress
THE Philippine Department of Justice (DOJ) has recommended murder charges against the suspects involved in the Mamasapano clash that left 44 members of the Philippine National Police’s elite Special Action Force (SAF) dead last year. On Monday, August 15, the DOJ
released a 55-page resolution that approved the formal indictment of five commanders and 83 members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), and private armed groups (PAG). Forty-four members of the SAF, 18 MILF fighters, and five civilians were killed in the clash on January 25, 2015 in Maguindanao during the hunt for
Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir, also known as “Marwan.” Among the suspects charged were Commanders Abdulrahman Abdulrakman Upan, Rakman (118TH MILF), Refy Guiaman, Anife and Haumves, operation commander of the 105th MILF Base Command. Twelve witness testimonies collected by the DOJ revealed that the suspects conspired to kill the SAF

members who were engaged in the “Oplan Exodus” counterterrorism operation ordered under the previous administration of President Benigno Aquino III. “The respondents acted in conspiracy, waited for each other, encircled the SAF, and shot them from all directions. Testimonial evidence shows the MILF, BIFF and PAGs knew they were
