THE Duterte administration’s decision to reject aid from the European Union (EU), even for the rehabilitation of Marawi City, was not a setback for the city’s rebuilding, a government official said on Monday, Oct. 23. Assistant Secretary Kristoffer James Purisima of the Office of Civil Defense said that other countries and international financial institutions pledged to support the city’s rehabilitation after government troops liberated it from Islamic State (IS)-inspired

terrorists. “Of course… there are other donors. There are possible— other possible donors,” Purisima said in a media briefing. “And in fact, the finance and resource management subcommittee is meeting as we speak in the Department of Finance to discuss the options that we have in terms of donations, and in terms of accepting grants,” he said. MALACAÑANG said it would be up to the Department of Justice (DOJ) to probe allegations that Senator Antonio Trillanes IV committed treason when he discussed with United States officials the corruption and human rights situation in the Philippines. In a radio interview on Sunday, October 22, Communications Secretary Martin Andanar was asked to comment if Trillanes should be charged with treason. Andanar said that the opposition senator should be investigat-

It’s hard to make hasty pronouncements,” he added. Last week, U.S. Republican Senator Marco Rubio, a critic of Philippine President Rodrigo

Duterte’s drug war, confirmed in a Twitter post that he met with Trillanes. “Senator @TrillanesSonny & I discussed U.S.-#Philippines alliance, combating corruption & protecting #humanrights amid their narcotics crisis,” Rubio said in a tweet. Last year, Rubio expressed “grave concern about the campaign of extrajudicial killings and human rights violations” under the Duterte administration. Trillanes, for his part, confirmed that his meeting with Rubio focused on “enhancing RPU.S. relations, corruption, and Senator Antonio Trillanes IV
