Fil-Am tapped to head civil division of Justice Dept. PRESIDENT Donald Trump is eyeing a Filipino-American attorney to lead the civil division of the Department of Justice (DOJ), according to various reports. If confirmed by the Senate, George Conway — who is the husband of senior White House counselor Kellyanne Conway — would be tasked with defending the administration in its legal battles, including the controversial travel ban, as first reported by the Wall Street Journal. The president’s revised travel ban against six predominantly Muslim nations has been blocked by federal judges in Hawaii and Maryland earlier this month. On Friday, March 17, the DOJ filed papers in federal court in Maryland in an effort to reinstate the freeze on immigrant and visitor arrivals from the countries in question. The Trump administration has argued that the executive order would help na-

VICE President Leni Robredo could be removed from her post for allegedly undermining President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration before the international community, according to House of Representatives Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez. In an interview with CNN, Alvarez revealed that he is studying the possibility of filing an impeachment complaint against Robredo for possible “betrayal of public trust” after condemning the Duterte administration in a video she sent to the United Na-

tions (UN). “In my opinion, there is a betrayal of trust. In my entire life, this is the first time I have seen a top government official smear the country’s reputation before the international community,” Alvarez said in mixed Filipino on Friday, March 17. “What would be the effect, economically?” In a video message uploaded on Monday, March 13, Robredo emphasized that the thousands of killings and human rights abuses allegedly tied to the Philippine government’s brutal war against illegal drugs have left Filipinos feeling “hopeless” and

PHILIPPINE President Rodrigo Duterte expressed his openness to enhance the country’s relationship with the United States amid the seemingly tense ties caused by human rights concerns in connection with his controversial war against drugs. Duterte, who has been highly critical of former U.S. President Barack Obama, said that he is “okay” with his new counterpart, President Donald Trump. “President Trump and I are okay and I can assure him also of our friendship and cooperation. We have no problem there,” Duterte told the Filipino community in Naypyidaw during his state visit to Myanmar on Sunday, March 19. The Philippine leader, who took office in July last year, constantly lambasted Obama and his administration for condemning the government’s campaign

WHILE the Philippine National Police (PNP) confirmed the existence of the so-called “palit-ulo” (exchange of head) scheme in the government’s war against illegal drugs, Police Chief General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa insisted that it was far different from Vice President Leni Robredo’s definition. During a press briefing on Monday, March 20, Dela Rosa clarified that PNP’s “exchange of head” refers to a practice wherein arrested drug pushers can reveal their supplier or higher drug lords in exchange of being charged with a lighter offense. “Instead of Section 5, the suspect’s violation would be of
