115th Congress sworn in, agenda targets Obama initiatives
THE United States’ 115th Congress was sworn into office on Tuesday, January 3, ushering a GOP-controlled Legislative Branch. Thirty-four senators and the entire House of Representatives was sworn in, including Speaker of the House Sen. Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin). Once President-elect Donald Trump is inaugurated on January 20, the GOP will be in control of both the Executive and Legislative branches —the first time in a decade. That being said, the future of several key initiatives from President Barack Obama look bleak, especially the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare. The dismantling of Obamacare — which has been a fixture in the Republican agenda since Obama entered office in 2008 — is likely to happen after Republican lawmakers announced a bill that may repeal the law within the next month. Democrats fear that repealing Obamacare
MANILA, Philippines – Vice President Leni Robredo said said on Monday, January 2 she would no longer exert effort to explain herself to President Duterte even as she lamented that he believed in “false” reports about her, including those stating she was part of a plot to oust him. Robredo was reacting to Duterte’s recent remark that the Vice President was excluded from Cabinet meetings because she attended protest rallies calling for his ouster. “Even if I’m very vocal about my opposition, I made a conscious decision not to attend rallies in deference to the President because I’m a member of the Cabinet,” the Vice President said in an interview in Camarines Sur. Robredo was apparently referring to the rallies against the burial of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani last Nov. 18 despite the lack of a final decision from the Supreme Court on the issue. She attended the Annual Honoring of Martyrs and Heroes in the People’s Resistance to Dictatorship at the Bantayog ng mga Bayani on Nov. 30 but not the protest actions, even as she assailed the surprise burial. “It’s saddening that he believed the reports he re- “Even if I’m very vocal about my opposition, I made a conscious decision not to attend rallies in deference to the President because I’m a

THE Philippines is shifting away from the United States in an attempt to ‘normalize’ its relationship with Beijing, the new Philippine envoy to China said on Monday, January 2. “We were one-sidedly imbalanced in favor of the US,” the Philippines’ new ambassador to China, Jose “Chito” Sta. Romana, told Agence France-Presse. For decades, the Philippines has been an ally of the U.S. but the relationship between the two countries has been put into question since Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte took office last June. Duterte has been constantly threatening to end the Philippines’ military and economic ties with the U.S. for the latter’s supposed ‘hypocrisy’ and ‘bullying’ of smaller nations, and also for its criticisms against the Philippine government’s anti-illegal drugs campaign. “The problem came after they began lecturing him. The president (Duterte) considers it an internal affair,” Sta. Romana said. He then added, “The Chinese don’t comment on your internal affairs.” Sta. Romana also described the Philippines’ shift to China as “a strategic shift in our foreign policy.” He, however, clarified, that the Philippines is

January PH Supreme Court rules EDCA constitutional The Philippine Supreme Court on Tuesday, Jan. 12, upheld the constitutionality of an executive agreement between the Philippines and the United States that permits increased rotational presence of US military troops in the country. In a 10-4-1 vote, the top court ruled in favor of the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), which was signed by the Philippines and US in 2014 but was not implemented due to legal challenges. The agreement, which has a 10-year lifespan, also allows U.S. troops access to Philippine military bases. The decision comes amid the ongoing dispute between the Philippines and China regarding conflicting claims in the South China Sea.
