SIOSON AJPress
THE complaint filed against Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte before the International Criminal Court (ICC) will not prosper, Malacañang said on Monday, April 24. Earlier on the same day, Jude Sabio — lawyer of self-confessed hitman Edgar Matobato — asked the Pre-Trial Chamber of the ICC to investigate Duterte and several other government officials and after trial, “convict them and sentence them to [a]

corresponding prison sentence or life imprisonment.” In his complaint, Sabio accused Duterte of masterminding mass murders “repeatedly, unchangingly, and continuously” in the Philippines, citing the alleged murders of over 1,400 people by the so-called Davao Death Squad (DDS) during his term as Davao City mayor. Matobato, Sabio’s client, testified before a Senate inquiry last year in which he confirmed the existence of the DDS. Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella denounced the

PH-US joint exercise kicks off on May 8
BALIKATAN to focus on humanitarian exercise, counterterrorism There will be no war games during the first Balikatan exercises under the administration of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. The exercises will officially begin on May 8 but “preliminary work” on community infrastructure projects have already commenced earlier in April. The planned activities will primarily be in Panay, Leyte, and Samar. “U.S. and Filipino service members will work together to renovate five schools and

move to challenge the president before the ICC, describing it as a “cynical effort against the reform-oriented agenda of the Duterte administration and of the betterment of the lives of the Filipino people.” “The timing of the filing of the case is suspect — apparently meant to create negative news in the midst of the Philippines ASEAN debut; as it cannot prosper,” Abella said. According to him, the complaint is only meant to humiliate Duterte amid the preparations for the up-

Robredo ordered to pay electoral protest fee by DANA
SIOSON AJPress
THE Philippine Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday, April 25, maintained that Vice President Leni Robredo has to pay the required fee for the proceedings of her counter-protest against former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. The court, sitting as the Presidential ElecVice President Leni Robredo toral Tribunal (PET), rejected the vice president’s motion for reconsideration of its earlier decision ordering Robredo to pay P15 million for the retrieval of contested poll materials. The PET gave Robredo five days from notice to pay the initial cash deposit of P81.46 million to proceed with his election protest against Robredo,” SC spokesperson Theodore Te said during a media briefing. In its resolution dated March 21, the SC ordered Robredo to pay P15.44 million for her counter-protest, which is payable in two parts — P8 million for the first tranche and P7.43 million for the second. The same order called for Marcos to pay P81.46 million to proceed with his election protest against Robredo.
