Maria Gatchalian took her former employer to court for retaliating against her when she complained about patient safety and quality of care. The Los Angeles Superior Court panel on Monday, December 11 granted Gatchalian $11.49 million in compensatory damages, including $9 million for the emotional distress, plus $30 million in punitive damages. “Staffing in healthcare is directly related to the quality of care delivered,” Gatchalian’s lawyer, David deRubertis, told Inquirer.net. “Cutting corners with staffing risks patient safety.” Gatchalian – a first-generation Filipino American – worked for the Woodland Hills

Storms are on the way. Are Californians prepared? IF your memories of last winter’s dozen “atmospheric rivers” have faded, Mother Nature is preparing a soaking wet reminder, with parts of the West Coast possibly looking at a month’s worth of rain by midweek and another close on its heels around Christmastime. The storms are part of the periodic El Niño weather pattern that meteorologists say promises more torrential rains and higher temperatures across California in the coming year. In hopes of minimizing the disasters that extreme weather can bring, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (OES), along with Listos California, Ethnic Media Services and California Black Media hosted a press briefing offering safety tips, advice and resources to help Californians prepare for the flooding, high winds and cold temperatures that will likely occur in various parts of the state. “Getting prepared for disaster starts with simple but important actions you can take now before storms hit,” said Diana Crofts-Pelayo,

street food restaurant Dollar Hits, was devastated and could not fathom that her business would be targeted after operating in that part of Historic Filipinotown for more than 13 years. “It was really sad when we were told that our restaurant was robbed. But we are grateful that nobody was hurt,” Chan told the Asian Journal in a  PAGE A2

MANILA — The Senate committee on women, children, family relations and gender equality chaired by Senator Risa Hontiveros intends to conduct a probe into “Appointed Son of God” Apollo Quiboloy’s Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) in January 2024. Hontiveros confirmed this in a letter sent to the Department of Justice on Thursday, December 14. The probe seeks to look into alleged crimes linked to Quiboloyled KOJC. “I am intending to set the hearing date on January 23, 2024, during which the committee will require the presence of Mr. Quiboloy. In the Photo from Facebook/Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy interest of justice and due process,

it is my strong desire to ensure that he will be physically present in the Senate for the hearing,” said Hontiveros. The letter further states Hontiveros’ request for the DOJ to issue an Immigration Lookout Bulletin Order so that Quiboloy will be in the Philippines during the hearing date. Following Hontiveros’ filing of resolution that seeks to investigate KOJC’s alleged crimes, Quiboloy’s legal counsel, Ferdinand Topacio, dared Hontiveros to bring the allegations to proper courts instead and not in the Senate. “If you think your witnesses are strong, why don’t you take them to court where the fight is fair and there is due process?” Topacio dared Hontiveros. 

MANILA — Senator Robinhood Padilla has proposed amending the 1987 Constitution and allowing the president and vice president to serve for four years and two terms. Under his Resolution of Both Houses (RBH) No. 5, the president and vice president would be elected “joint candidates,” the Senate would grow to 54 members, with 24 of them serving for eight years, and the House of Representatives lawmakers would serve for four years. Padilla filed RBH No. 5 on

Wednesday, December 13. It is “imperative to strike a balance between the need for policy continuity, which requires adequate time for lawmakers to fulfill their legislative agenda, and the need to prevent the accumulation of power, which may lead to political entrenchment,” the rookie legislator, who chairs the Senate committee on constitutional amendments and revision of codes, said in the resolution. “It is important to provide an allowable extension of service, thus providing elected officials with a more substantial opportunity to effect long-term  PAGE A2
