MANILA — President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday, Dec. 7, brushed aside charges leveled against him before the International Criminal Court (ICC) in relation to the reported human rights abuses committed in his anti-drug campaign. “Give me a little bit of time. I will finish it to the last man. I do not care what other people say. I do not give a s*** what the International Court of Justice says,” Duterte said. “At the end of the day, if my country collapses under the weight of drugs, you will not be here to help the Filipino,” he said. DATELINE Trump travel ban given green light by Supreme Court FROM THE AJPRESS NEWS TEAM ACROSS AMERICA

THOUGH not a final ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday, December 4, gave the Trump administration the green light to enforce its travel ban which had been blocked by judges in Hawaii and Maryland. The ban — in its third version — will prohibit residents of the six predominantly Muslim nations of Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, and Chad from traveling into the United States. Travelers from North Korea and Venezuela are also said to be affected. The Supreme Court’s Monday announcement came unexpected, and with little explanation. It did though, signal that the high court may approve the latest version which was issued by President Donald Trump in September. Of the nine justices, seven were in support of the ban. Only two justices — Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor — were opposed. PAGE A2

Roque had earlier said the delegation would bring up the issue wherein the Philippines, being an ICC member, must be respected under the principle of complementarity, which provides that the court will only exercise jurisdiction if domestic courts are unwilling or unable to exercise jurisdiction on any crime cognizable by the ICC. “To violate the principle of complementarity would be to violate the very basis of our consent to be bound by the Rome Statute,” Roque said. “If this will happen, then there may be a possibility that the Philippines, like the three other African states, may withdraw from the Rome Statute of the ICC.” Duterte also recognized that he is facing

asked if the former president will also be included in the probe. Aguirre has ordered the NBI to conduct an investigation and case build-up over the “danger to public health” of the dengue vaccination program launched by the Department of Health (DOH) in April 2016 during the Aquino administration under then-Health Secretary Janette Garin. Under the DOH’s mass immunization program, more than 700,000 children in the country’s three highly endemic regions—Regions

III Central Luzon, IV-A Calabarzon, and Metro Manila—were administered Dengvaxia last year. “We have to know why [the DOH] ordered such a huge amount of vaccine and immediately vaccinated 733,000 schoolchildren. Is that appropriate?” Aguirre told reporters. The justice secretary also encouraged families of the children who were administered Dengvaxia to come forward and give their information to the NBI if their children would show adverse effects due to

complaint baseless; focus on work by EDU

PUNAY Philstar.com

MANILA — Saying she has repeatedly stated her position that the charges in the impeachment complaint against her “bear no sufficient basis,” Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno appealed on Thursday, Dec. 7, to her fellow magistrates to focus on their work as “there is much to be done for this country.” Sereno’s appeal came after Associate Justice Teresita Leonardo de Castro and other ranking Supreme Court (SC) officials testified in the hearings on her impeachment by the House justice committee. Three or four more magistrates are expected to appear in the hearings next week.

THE Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has reportedly recommended to President Rodrigo Duterte another extension of martial law in Mindanao, which is set to lose its validity by the end of the year. Citing a “highly placed source” who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the Inquirer on its report dated Thursday, December 7, said that the AFP endorsed the extension of martial law for one more year. According to the unnamed source, ground commanders have expressed support for the recommendation as the prevailChief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno Inquirer.net photo ing security development re-
