PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has declared that he still trusted China amid claims that it was capable of controlling the Philippines’ power grid. Speaking to reporters in Malacañang on Thursday, November 28, Duterte said he did not see China’s co-ownership of the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) as a threat to national security. u PAGE A4 He said that the military could handle any issues concerning the country’s national security. “May mga (There are) security issues that can be handled by the military. It cannot be a

problem,” the president said during a media interview. “China has talked to us, through me. Kulang pa ang Pilipino ng trust (Filipinos don’t have much trust) but I trust them. I take their word for it,” he added. Duterte made the statement after some senators and former Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio have raised concerns over China’s co-ownership of the NGCP. China’s State Grid Corporation owns 40 percent of the NGCP, a privately owned consortium. Carpio on Tuesday, November 26, said Beijing’s control of NGCP should be a “cause for concern” because it would be u PAGE A3

Filipinos are considered the largest AAPI group in Nevada, with 169,462 Filipinos in the state according to the latest American Community Survey (ACS) released in September 2018. MANILA — There is no reason to fear a possible shutdown of the Philippines’ power infrastructure by China’s grid operator, a Beijing official said on Thursday, November 28. Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang described as “completely groundless” the allegation that the State Grid Corp. of China (SGCC) poses a national security threat to the Philippines amid reports of its stake with the country’s grid operator. “To my knowledge, the [SGCC] took part in the Transco project as a cooperation partner, providing safe, efficient and high-quality electricity services. The project is now operated, managed and maintained by the Philippine side, with the Chinese partner offering necessary technical support upon request,” he said at a press briefing in Beijing, referring to the Philippines’ National Transmission Corp. u PAGE A4

country. They (foreign athletes) have to know that the government is not happy with it and the president of the country where they are playing ordered an investigation,” he said in an exclusive interview with CNN Philippines on Thursday, November 28. The Philippines has drawn flak and made international headlines for the blunders, such as unfinished venues, inadequate food supply, transportation woes, and accommodation issues.

Duterte was reportedly angry over the logistical troubles that have been plaguing the regional sporting event and called for a probe. However, he appeared calm on Thursday as he urged the public to refrain from creating a “firestorm” over the event. “I said let us investigate. Do not create a firestorm now because we are in the thick of preparations,” he told reporters at Malacañang. “To me personally there was u PAGE A2

Sandigan affirms dismissal of P1-billion Marcos wealth case by ELIZABETH

MARCELO Philstar.com

MANILA — The Sandiganbayan has affirmed its earlier dismissal of a P1.052-billion civil forfeiture case against the Marcos family and their alleged cronies due to the insufficient evidence presented by the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG). In a three-page resolution promulgated on Nov. 20 and obtained by reporters on Friday, November 29, the court’s Second Division said the PCGG failed to raise any new issue or argument in its motion for reconsideration that would warrant the reversal of its Sept. 25 ruling dismissing the case. The resolution was penned by Associate Justice Michael Frederick Musngi with the concurrence of Associate Justices Oscar Herrera Jr. and Lorifel Pahimna. “The Supreme Court has repeatedly held in a long line of cases that a Motion for Reconsideration should be denied when the same only rehashes issues previously put forward. The PCGG also seeks P50 billion in moral damages and P1 billion in exemplary damages. The PCGG said the Marcoses and their co-defendants must also be compelled to pay temperate damages, nominal damages and other judicial costs, the amounts of which shall be determined by the court. The suit stemmed from the alleged use of Tourist Duty Free Shops Inc. (TDFS), then owned by Santiago, to secure favorable deals from the government such as exemption from taxes and franchise to operate at international airports, for the benefit of the Marcos spouses and their cronies. The PCGG said the Tantocos as well as Santiago also acted as “dummies, nominees and/or agents” of the Marcos spouses in unlawfully acquiring personal assets such as works of art, clothes, jewelry as well real estate properties in New York.
