Connie Mariano, who was a doctor of former United States presidents, is among the personalities who will determine the fate of the 80 candidates vying for the elusive crown in the prestigious pageant.

“We will be engaging with the leaders of economies of the Asia-Pacific region to agree on how we can achieve food and energy security, economic inclusion of our micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), women, indigenous people, and other segments whose economic potential remains to be unlocked through digitalization and innovation, and sustainable development and addressing the climate change crisis,” he said in his departure speech at the Villamor Air Base.

He will also lead a Philippine economic briefing and meet with top U.S. companies.

the chief executive will also be on a working visit to Los Angeles on Nov. 17 and 18 to meet with business leaders and the Filipino community there before heading to Honolulu in Hawaii.

While in Hawaii, the president will visit Indo-Pacific Command headquarters, where he will likely raise the South China Sea dispute with top U.S. security officials.

He will also meet with investors and the Filipino community there.

Marcos will visit the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command headquarters in Pearl Harbor on Oahu island to meet with Adm. John Aquilino, the commander of

the U.S. military base.

Foreign Undersecretary Charles Jose said the president’s trip to the U.S. military headquarters would add “a layer to the cooperation that we are trying to establish with like-minded states to promote what we have been advocating all along – a rules-based order, especially in the maritime areas.”

Marcos’ visit to the U.S. military base comes in the face of Beijing’s growing aggression in the South China Sea. The president’s trip to San Francisco is his third time in the U.S. and his 18th trip abroad since assuming office on June 30 last year. n

Mariano, meanwhile, is the first FilipinoAmerican to become a Navy Rear Admiral and the first woman in the U.S. military to be appointed as the White House Physician. Her career in medicine included serving three US presidents: • Bill Clinton • George H.W. Bush • Barack Obama.

In 2001, Mariano completed her colorful 24-year career as Rear Admiral. She retired to join the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The distinguished doctor is also an author.

She published her memoir titled “The White House Doctor: My Patients Were Presidents, A Memoir” in 2010. She also leads two podcasts, namely, “House Calls with Dr. Connie” and “The Widow’s Talk.”

In 2020, Mariano was a recipient of the Global Beauty Awards Lifetime Achievement Award. This award highlights and honors the excellence of the international beauty pageant community.

Several Filipinos expressed Pinoy pride after finding out about her inclusion in Miss Universe judges.

Marcos will attend the APEC Summit as fresh tensions grip the West Philippine Sea, the part of South China Sea inside Manila’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, due to China’s aggressive acts, including preventing Filipino vessels from accessing the resource-rich area.

Last Friday, November 10 the Philippines accused the China Coast Guard (CCG) of using a water cannon to prevent a routine resupply mission to the BRP Sierra Madre, a rusty ship that serves as a Philippine Navy installation at the Ayungin Shoal.

The incident happened weeks after CCG and maritime militia vessels hit Philippine Coast Guard ship BRP Cabra and Unaiza, a boat contracted by the Philippine military to conduct a resupply mission also in Ayungin, on May 2.

Philippine security officials have assailed what they described as China’s “illegal” activities in the West Philippine Sea and have vowed to protect the country’s interests.

‘Ironclad’ commitment Marcos and Harris met on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-U.S. Summit in Jakarta last September and tackled various topics, including the alliance between the Philippines and the U.S. and the South China Sea dispute.

During the meeting, Harris reiterated Washington’s “ironclad” alliance commitment to the Philippines and highlighted the role that their alliance plays in ensuring a free, open and prosperous Indo-Pacific, according to a recent White House statement.

Marcos and Harris also talked about the maritime security environment in the South China Sea and reviewed opportunities to strengthen bilateral maritime cooperation, including alongside like-minded partners.

Biden campaign releases first TV ad Duterte is country’s caretaker... featuring Fil-Am business owner, his wife PRESIDENT Joe Biden has released the Biden-Harris 2024 campaign’s first TV ad featuring a Filipino-American and his Vietnamese-American wife, who are small business owners.

The ad is part of a paid media program targeting the Asian-American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities across the United States, according to a Democratic National Committee (DNC) update sent by Brencia Berry, director of Coalitions and Community Engagement at the DNC, to supporters.

The media program will include a diverse array of print, TV and radio advertising.

The TV ad “Family Business” spotlights Fil-Am Odeen Domingo and Jenny Poon, who run a small business in Phoenix, Arizona.

Domingo praises Biden for directing his attention to smaller businesses instead of corporations since “it wasn’t like that before.”

The 30-second spot will run on general market programming in Phoenix, which includes target-rich programming like “Dancing With the Stars,” “Bachelor in Paradise” and high-rated local and network news programs, and on national cable news, according to the DNC update.

In the TV ad, Poon talks about her experience as a daughter of Vietnamese immigrants who built a small business and how that shaped her into who she is today.

Poon and Domingo said the shift of focus to

investments in small business and away from large corporations has jump-started small businesses like theirs.

Beyond the television spot, the media program will include print ads in national and local outlets in the battleground states Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

The print ads will be in-language in media outlets targeting Indian, Chinese, Korean, Filipino, Vietnamese and other South Asian communities.

“We are excited to announce our early investment into AAPI media, building on our campaign’s intentional, aggressive outreach to the voters that sent President Biden and Vice President Harris to the White House in historic numbers in 2020,” said BidenHarris 2024 Campaign Manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez.

“Our first ad, ‘Family Business,’ communicates the clear choice facing the AAPI community next November – between President Biden’s commitment to investing in our small businesses and our families, or MAGA Republicans solely focused on tax breaks for the wealthy and powerful corporations.”

The Pew Research Center reported that 72% of Asian voters in the 2020 election contributed to Biden’s victory and only 28% voted for former President Donald Trump.

On its official website, APEC said that its 21 member economies account for nearly 40 percent of the global population, almost half of global trade, and approximately 60 percent of global GDP. As of 2021, APEC member states were the destination for more than 60 percent of U.S. goods exports and seven of the top 10 overall trading

partners for the U.S. are APEC members.

While in San Francisco, the president will also lead a Philippine economic briefing and have several meetings with top U.S. companies.

He will also attend the APEC CEO Summit and the APEC Leaders Dialogue with the APEC Business Advisory Council.

Marcos will also have working visits in Los Angeles, California and Honolulu, Hawaii where he will meet with the Filipino community.

The president will also visit the Daniel K. Inouye AsiaPacific Center for security studies, and the Indo-Pacific Command headquarters while in Hawaii.

While Jose did not give specifics on Marcos’ Hawaiian sidetrip, he said he expects discussions on security issues.

“It adds a layer to the cooperation that we are trying to establish with likeminded states in order to promote what we have been advocating all along,” the DFA official said.

The Marcos family was exiled in Hawaii in 1986 following the ouster of the President’s father and namesake, Ferdinand Marcos, through the “People Power Revolution.” n

High court affirms dismissal...

“As the party seeking the recovery, the Republic has the burden of establishing its claim through admissible and relevant evidence.

As vanguards of justice, the Sandiganbayan, and ultimately, this Court, have the obligation not only to meticulously analyze and weigh

all the pieces of evidence - separating the unsubstantiated from those proved, discarding the irrelevant and inadmissible - but also to ensure that issues already passed upon are not litigated anew,” it added.

Named as respondents in the consolidated cases were former First Lady Imelda Marcos and her children Senator Imee Marcos, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Irene Marcos-Araneta.

The PCGG filed a complaint before the Sandiganbayan in 1987 against Marcos Sr., Imelda, Lucio Tan, Don Ferry, and 22 others for alleged ill-gotten wealth.

In 2012, the Sandiganbayan dismissed the complaint, saying the prosecution failed to prove that the assets and properties were illgotten. n

Over a dozen foreigners holding fake Philippine passports were intercepted recently by the Bureau of Immigration and National Bureau of Investigation. In a related development, several Chinese nationals were reportedly found with Philippine birth certificates issued by a civil registrar’s office in a town in the Caraga Administrative Region in northern Mindanao.

A Philippine birth certificate or passport will allow the holder to obtain a driver’s license and even a permit to own and carry a gun outside one’s residence.

The holder might even obtain a voter’s ID. Senators, seeing the risks posed by such fake identification documents, are set to investigate the racket, which could have only been perpetrated with the connivance of crooks in government.

At the height of the bloody crackdown on drugs during the previous administration, anti-narcotics agents had asked arrested Chinese suspects why they continued to operate in Manila. Among the reasons, the Chinese reportedly replied, was the ease of getting away with illegal activities in this country with the help of corrupt Philippine

government employees.

Drug traffickers weren’t the only ones found to be bribing their way into the country.

Crooked immigration personnel were also indicted for allowing the illegal entry of dozens of Chinese nationals who ended up working in Philippine offshore gaming operation firms.

After this racket was busted, there have been continuing reports of other foreign POGO workers, mostly Chinese, being arrested or charged for various criminal activities in the Philippines, including murder, kidnapping, torture, sex trafficking and, more recently, cyber scams.

Foreigners cannot engage in illegal activities in another country without the involvement of locals, especially government employees.

intensify efforts to ferret out those involved in these illegal activities, even as the Senate Blue Ribbon committee prepares to launch its own inquiry. Authorities must ensure that offenders face the stiffest penalties, with the heaviest punishment reserved for Filipinos working in government.

At the same time, institutional measures must be implemented to prevent the issuance of government-issued identification papers to those who are not qualified for the documents.

Celebrating the entrepreneurship potential of overseas Pinoys

will be arriving to attend the APEC CEO Summit. This is an important event where the 21 member-states of APEC convene for extensive discussions concerning global opportunities and challenges that are currently shaping economic, environmental and societal trends within the region.

Along with the APEC CEO Summit comes the opportunity for the president to connect with the thriving

Filipino communities in the United States. The president’s visit is not only important for diplomatic reasons but also because it provides a platform for overseas Pinoys to have their voices heard and share their unique perspectives on the situation back home.

Overseas Pinoys, OFWs (overseas Filipino workers) in particular, are the lifeblood of the Philippine economy. Pinoys can be

found in every corner of the world; in fact, it never ceases to amaze me when I hear stories of Filipinos residing in far-flung regions, proudly representing their heritage and making a positive impact wherever they go. During my visits to San Francisco, I have had the privilege of meeting numerous Pinoys who thrived in their chosen fields. They are admired for their strong work ethic, determination and resilience.

The success of overseas Pinoys is a testament to the potential of the Filipino people. It is a reminder that the Philippines is blessed with talented individuals who, given the right opportunities and support, can make a significant impact on our economy and society. While they may have left their homeland in search of better opportunities, I am certain that they carry within them a deep-rooted love for

their country and a desire to contribute to its progress.

The diaspora of Filipinos has enriched not just Filipino culture but also the common Filipino’s awareness and understanding of the world.

Many Filipino families, I am sure, got acquainted with the Middle East because a relative was once, or still is, working there.

Romualdez insists: UniTeam remains intact

HOUSE Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez insisted on Monday, November 13 that the UniTeam Alliance may have differences, but its members always work together.

Pressed on the perceived rift within the political alliance during a media interview, Speaker Romualdez (president of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats) said: “It’s still a UniTeam; we always work together.”

“The president always wants us to work together not just in Congress, with

the executive but as a country, so we will always strive for that,” he added.

“There will always be differences, but we will always work toward resolving those differences for the service of the Filipino people. That’s our primordial concern that we will band together and unite as one for the service of the Filipino,” he added.

Aside from Lakas-CMD, the members of the alliance include the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas, Hugpong ng Pagbabago and Partido ng Masang Pilipino.

MANILA — The Philippines has earned another accolade after being named the “Destination of the Year” award at the 9th TripZilla Excellence Awards 2023.

This was announced by the marketing arm of the Department of Tourism, Tourism Promotions Board, which also hailed the recognition as a “significant milestone” last November 10.

“This prestigious accolade showcases the country as a top travel destination, celebrating the nation’s diverse attractions, rich heritage, and warm hospitality,” the board said.

Last year, Singapore’s Sentosa clinched the “Destination of the Year award.”

This year, it is actually a double win for the Philippines with TPB also winning the coveted Sustainability Leader of the Year (Asia) award for the second consecutive year.

‘Rebuild my life’ In 2009, De Lima, as Commission on Human Rights (CHR) chair, led an investigation into the socalled Davao Death Squad, which was blamed for the murders of suspected drug pushers and criminals in Davao City where Duterte was the mayor. On Aug. 22, 2016, De Lima, as chair of the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights, started an inquiry into the killings and questionable police operations under Duterte’s drug war.

Days later, Duterte produced a so-called matrix to support his allegation linking her to the drug trade at New Bilibid Prison while she was justice secretary.

The Department of Justice subsequently filed three criminal cases against De Lima, leading to her arrest in 2017. She was acquitted in two of the cases in 2021 and 2022, and on Monday, the court hearing the third and final case allowed her to post bail, leading to her temporary release after almost seven years in detention.

Tacardon, however, emphasized that De Lima was also “focusing on rebuilding herself,” a subject she touched on during a press briefing just hours after she gained her freedom.

“They destroyed my life,

that’s why I’m going to rebuild my life now. They destroyed or ruined my name, my reputation. Now that I’m free, I’m going to work hard to redeem my name and complete vindication is the key,” she told reporters on Monday.

‘Guarantee her safety’ As for De Lima’s legal situation, La Viña told the Inquirer: “The next steps are obviously to have this final case dismissed because [bail has been granted].

There is no legal battle to speak about anymore. To be honest, this is just going to be formalities from now on.”

De Leon expressed a similar sentiment, saying the team was confident that the last case against her would be dismissed because of her innocence.

“Right from the very start, all of these cases are manufactured, characterized as political persecution,” he said.

On her first day as a free woman, De Lima visited the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag in Pangasinan province on Tuesday morning to fulfill a vow she made to herself while in detention.

Some devotees who saw her told the Inquirer that there was no fanfare during her visit, adding that she “quietly prayed” inside the church for a few minutes.

Although her visit took place shortly before a 10 a.m. Mass, churchgoers said she left before it started.

Following her release, rights watchdogs urged the Marcos administration to make her safety a priority,

saying she remains a target of verbal and possibly physical attacks.

Butch Olano, Amnesty International Philippines section director, noted how the former senator was targeted by the state for being critical of Duterte’s war on drugs that left thousands dead.

He said that De Lima should not have been jailed in the first place on the basis of “fabricated” drug charges as he urged the government to protect her.

“We… call on the Marcos administration to ensure her safety as she regains temporary freedom,” he said in a statement, recalling how De Lima was taken hostage

by Abu Sayyaf members at her detention cell in Camp Crame in October 2021.

“The government must now guarantee her safety, security and protection as she remains the target of vilification and threats,” Olano added.

Karapatan also expressed concern for De Lima’s safety as the rights group pointed to political prisoners who were targeted after their release from jail, with some ending up dead.

“All former political prisoners, like former Senator De Lima, they are still in a dangerous situation because the threats—open and overt threats—have not clearly dissipated,” Karapatan Secretary General Cristina Palabay told the Inquirer.

She said it was “not impossible” that Duterte might get back at his critic, considering her “many

exposés” on the numerous cases of extrajudicial killings under the drug war during his presidency, in addition to those allegedly carried out by the DDS. “That is why it is important that there should be accountability.

Former President Duterte, along with his cohorts who cheered [him] on and encouraged and allowed that kind of travesty of justice to [happen] to Senator De Lima, should be made accountable,” Palabay stressed.

International support The CHR vowed to continue to monitor De Lima’s case as it described her release on bail as a “notable development after almost seven years in detention.”

U.S. Department of State spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a statement: “The United States welcomes former Philippine Senator Leila de Lima’s release on bail after nearly seven years of detention on politically motivated drug charges. Senator De Lima’s release follows her acquittal in two out of three cases.”

Ambassadors MaryKay Carlson of the United States, David Hartman of Canada, Luc Veron of the European Union, Laure Beaufils of the United Kingdom and Hae Kyong Yu of Australia have also issued statements supporting De Lima.

Ombudsman probes More Filipino workers arrive from Israel issuance of PH passports to foreigners

MANILA - The Office of the Ombudsman will investigate the reported issuance of Philippine passports, tax identification numbers (TIN), and other government identification cards (IDs) to foreigners.

In an interview with reporters after attending the Senate deliberations on the proposed 2024 national budget of his office, Ombudsman Samuel Martires said that they will investigate even without a formal complaint filed.

If proven true, this would be a clear violation of the Anti-graft and Corrupt Practices Act, Martires said.

He said that this is not the first that the Office of the Ombudsman has investigated motu propio, saying that they have done this before as in the case of the alleged

anomalous procurement of onions for Kadiwa centers by the Department of Agriculture (DA).

During the preliminary deliberations of the Senate on the 2024 national budget, the arrest of 10 foreigners bearing Philippine passports was tackled by the senators.

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said one of the required documents for applying for a passport was a birth certificate and that some foreigners used fake birth certificates to obtain Philippine passports.

PSA Assistant National Statistician Marizza Grande said that in coordination with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), they have validated that six foreigners with Philippine passports submitted birth certificates PAGE 10

ANOTHER batch of Filipino workers from Israel arrived home on Monday, November 13.

This was the seventh batch composed of 29 caregivers, 10 hotel workers and two children.

The latest arrival brings the total number of repatriates from Israel to 229 since October 18.

Ruby Quibote, 55, from Malasiqui, Pangasinan, and a caregiver for 14 years in the Kibbutz HaMa’apil area, said she decided to return home because she has not witnessed a war as intense as the present one.

“In my 14 years, I have not experienced anything worse than that. Before, it only lasted for one week, unlike now, it has been going on for a month, non-stop launching of missiles and rockets,” Quibote said.

Quibote said she had finished her contract, and her ward died recently.

As in earlier batches, the new arrivals received financial assistance of

P120,000 each from the Department of Migrant Workers(DMW), the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

Filipinos from Gaza On the other hand, the second batch of 41 Filipinos and seven Palestinians — mostly spouses of the Filipino repatriates — arrived on Sunday night, November 12 from Egypt, bringing to 75 the total number of Filipinos who fled from Gaza under attack by Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

According to the DMW, the group included OFW Noralyn Pagagao, a domestic worker in Kuwait. She was with her employer in Gaza for a month’s vacation when the conflict in southern Israel erupted on October 7.

DMW said her employer allowed her to return to the country for safety reasons.

The Philippine Embassy in Jordan said that after more than a month of waiting

and enduring the relentless bombardment of the Gaza Strip, a total of 111 out of the 137 Filipinos were able to cross the Rafah border since November 7.

Philippine Ambassador to Jordan Wilfredo Santos has activated the embassy’s Emergency Management Team (EMT) to monitor the situation on the ground and to ascertain the conditions of the Filipinos in the Gaza Strip.

“Specifically, the EMT built its database of Filipinos in the Gaza Strip and operated non-stop to contact them every day to check their status and to coordinate with them to ensure their safe exit from Gaza,” the embassy said on Monday.

The Philippine Embassy in Jordan has concurrent jurisdiction over the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, State of Palestine.

It also coordinated with the Philippine Embassies in Israel and Egypt and the United Nations Office for Project Services in Gaza to ensure all possible assistance was extended to the Filipino community

there.

The 48 evacuees are all permanent residents in the Gaza Strip, said Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Administration Antonio Morales in a television interview.

“They are among the 56 evacuees who are able to cross Egypt on Saturday, November 11,” Morales said.

However, he said 14 Filipinos opted to return to the Gaza Strip when nine Palestinian family members were not allowed by the border guards to enter Egypt.”

“Based on the information we have from our embassy in Amman, there are only 39 Filipinos left in the Gaza Strip,” Morales said.

Philippine Ambassador to Egypt Ezzedin Tago assisted the group at the Cairo International Airport for their flight to Manila.

MANILA — The Department of Health said on Tuesday, November 14 that it is validating reports suggesting the compromise and leakage of COVID-19 vaccination data from the Philippines stored within the World Health Organization.

“The DOH is currently in close coordination with WHO and the Department of Information and Communications Technology to ascertain the veracity of this report, as well as to determine the extent of any possible data breaches and the appropriate interventions, should there be any,” the agency said in a statement.

The department said it will release additional information as soon as it becomes available.

“In the meantime, the DOH assures the public that measures are in place to ensure data privacy, and steps have been taken to reinforce the security of DOH-managed data systems through different security solutions,” it said.

In September, a ransomware attack affected the systems of the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. The state health insurer said the attack did not affect the servers containing the private information of its members.

What is fentanyl?

What causes vaginal itching?

Vaginal itch, with or without drainage, must be medically attended to.

The most common cause is vaginosis, like infection with Trichomonas Vaginalis.

Many times, there are no symptoms at all, and the first sign could be from the male partner who complains of itchiness or irritation in his organ. If gynecologic consultation proves it to be Trichomonas Vaginalis, oral medications (Flagyl) will treat the condition. But all the sexual partners (as in any sexually-transmitted disease) must likewise be medicated to eradicate the vicious cycle.

Does smoking prevent Alzheimer’s?

Preliminary studies appear to show this, but the final verdict is not in yet.

One thing that is a proven fact is that smoking causes cancer and it kills. Therefore, medically, no physician will prescribe smoking for the possibility that it could lower the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease. Forget it!

I have high blood pressure. Can I still take aspirin?

Aspirin (81 mg, like Baby Aspirin) is widely recommended for people 35 and older as a mild blood thinner, to slow down hardening of the artery, and prevent heart attack and stroke. So long as your blood pressure is well-controlled with medications under physician care, and you do not have any contraindication like stomach ulcer or previous history of it, then 81 mg of aspirin used for the reason mentioned above is safe. As always, it is best to discuss this with your own physician who is familiar with your personal medical history.

Is melatonin effective for jetlag?

A pineal gland extract derivative, melatonin has been reported to be effective in combatting jetlag. However, one of the side effects noted in clinical studies is cardiac arrhythmias (heart rhythm disturbance).

Consulting a physician before taking any medication is a prudent

practice.

Are probiotics effective?

New studies have shown that while a probiotic is useful, this supplement is more effective in our microbiome (gastrointestinal) health if used with a prebiotic.

The combination is known as Dualbiotic.

These supplements (gummies or capsules) help balancing our gut flora of bacteria, the good and the bad, to maintain a healthy gut. An imbalanced microbiome not only leads to GI problems but also to metabolic and cardiovascular problems, which negatively impacts our overall health.

Can I get TB from kissing?

Yes, most definitely, if your partner has active pulmonary (lung) tuberculosis. One can be exposed to TB by airborne (inhaling the breath of a person with active TB) or physical contact (contaminated hands touching food or drink that is ingested, or sharing dining utensils, toothbrush, or by kissing, etc). So, if you are in doubt, make sure your partner seeks medical care.

And since you are exposed to him, you also need a checkup. The same precaution must be taken with all close contacts for either of you.

Can Viagra help my erection problem?

Most likely yes, even at the age of 35. Majority of male Erectile Dysfunction (ED) cases respond to Sildenafil Citrate (Viagra) and other ED meds. Medical evaluation is recommended to rule out any organic cause for the ED. If none is found, the cause could be psychological, and Viagra will certainly be effective. Taking these ED pills together with any form of nitroglycerine (heart vasodilator) pills could lead to massive shock. These must be used under medical supervision.

Can bathing in a tub cause disease?

MISS Universe Philippines (MUPh) National Director Shamcey Supsup-Lee emphasized that the selection method of this renowned competition — where they reach out to candidates outside Metro Manila — will provide women in the provinces with an equal opportunity.

In an exclusive interview with The Manila Times, Lee said this is one of the changes they made to showcase the best representation of the community. Other reforms include removing the minimum height requirement and being open to all civil statuses.

“A typical pageant usually starts with physical beauty, but because we believe in inclusivity and diversity, we now welcome women with children. There is no height limitation and no age limit,” Lee said.

The 20-year-old artist, who burst onto the scene with her debut album “Sour,” now leads the Grammy race with her sophomore masterpiece, “Guts.”

The Fil-Am artist’s nominations span across multiple categories. The big three categories have acknowledged her prowess, with “Guts” clinching a nomination for Album of the Year, while her chart-topping single “Vampire” earned nods for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

In addition, the album has been recognized as a contender for Best Pop Vocal Album, and “Vampire” is in the running for Best Pop Solo Performance.

The gala celebrated the culinary prowess of renowned chefs Margarita Forés and Johanne Siy, both recipients of the Best Female Chef of Asia award. Chef Siy described the menu as a reflection of their heritage, blending Filipino flavors with their culinary influences.

Chef Forés highlighted the importance of showcasing iconic Filipino dishes and ingredients, such as kinilaw (a traditional Filipino ceviche) and unique Filipino rice and corn grits.

Explaining their choices, Chef Forés said, “We started with Chef Jo’s hamachi kinilaw. It’s one of the oldest dishes from our country. I mean, it was around even before we became the Philippines. So I think that it’s very important to push that because our kinilaw is so unique compared to Latin American ceviche and Hawaiian poke or even the Italian crudo. And what makes it different is the vinegar.”

Beyond showcasing iconic Filipino dishes, the chefs also celebrated unique and lesser-known Filipino ingredients.

A collaborative dish featured Filipino rice and corn grits, an alternative product from Negros, connecting Filipino flavors with something quintessentially American – grits.

Lee mentioned that the accredited partner system and regional pageants are comparable to the Miss USA pageant, in which partners hold state pageants to choose candidates for the national pageant.

“In the past, before becoming an official candidate for Miss Universe Philippines, you had to submit an application, attend a screening, and the committee would pick the official delegate,” Lee said.

“However, we believe that many ladies with potential do not have the support to travel to Manila, and they need the assistance of locals,” she added.

Aspirants will now have the opportunity to join Miss Universe Philippines through regionally accredited partners, resolving the question of who will support and train them.

Lee emphasized that the organization is reaching out to them, or they are getting closer to them through their accredited partners.

The MUPh National Director praised the outcome of the Miss Universe Philippines Leyte pageant on October 18, as it was the first group to put on a pageant under the regional partnerships. It followed the pattern of an international competition with tourism videos and preliminaries.

Angel Rose Tambal, a 24-year-old civil engineer from the municipality of La Paz, was named Miss Universe Philippines-Leyte after surpassing 20 other candidates from the province.

Tambal also won two major prizes, Best in Swimwear and Best in Evening Gown, and three corporate prizes.

Tambal stated in a brief interview with The Manila Times that she would not have gotten this far without the support of her family, friends, her “glam” team, and the La Paz municipal administration.

“Finally, after a month of preparations, it was paying off.

I was just praying to God that whatever the result is, I will accept it wholeheartedly,” Tambal said.

“I’m expecting there will be a lot of training and preparations, especially since this will be the first time for Miss Universe Philippines to have a representative from Leyte. This is a huge responsibility, so I must really work hard to showcase what our province has to offer to the universe,” she added.

She will compete in the Miss Universe Philippines competition in 2024 and represent her province.

Lee stated that following Leyte, they began the preproduction of provinces such as Camiguin, Bohol, and Cebu, where most of the pageants will take place in December and January.

“As I evaluate the Leyte pageant, I see that the municipalities have been supportive of their candidates. It’s truly a community effort in which the girls are not competing with each other, but she is there as the best representative of the community,” Lee enthused.

“I tell the ladies that the most important thing is how you compete and how you would represent the Philippines.

If you make us proud, you are already a winner,” she added.

Lee described it as difficult to anticipate the outcome, despite the fact that the Philippines is regarded as a powerhouse in pageantry. Other nations look to the Philippines as the candidates possess all the standards and qualities of a beauty queen.

“Joining a beauty pageant can really change you a lot, whether you win or not. It will help you become a better version of yourself because of the training and experiences,” Lee said.

“And sometimes it takes one step to reach your dreams and have the courage to do that,” she concluded. n

Praising the next generation Both chefs commended the younger generation of Filipino and FilipinoAmerican chefs for their role in elevating Filipino cuisine.

Chef Forés mentioned that the new breed of chefs for embracing regional diversity and traditional ingredients, noting their influence in bringing Filipino cuisine to new heights. She emphasized, “Even in Manila, you will not imagine how the young chefs have really embraced doing Filipino cuisine; their tasting restaurants are all about really showcasing our ingredients, our ways of cooking.”

She added that young chefs in Manila are passionately embracing Filipino cuisine, creating tasting menus that highlight local ingredients and traditional cooking methods.

Their exploration of undiscovered traditional elements, outside the metropolitan areas, demonstrates a commitment to preserving and innovating Filipino culinary heritage.

“What’s incredible is that they’re researching on traditional things that are undiscovered because they’re going outside Manila, going to little towns and climbing mountains to find new things and new ingredients,” Chef Fores said. “So for those of us who have been working with food for a long time, there is a certain newness really with things that are actually old that have been there for a

long time.”

Addressing hunger and malnutrition Over the past two and a half years, ARK through their Feed Back project has transformed 77 communities into food-secure regions, where residents are now producers of organic, nourishing produce.

The communities have experienced a significant boost in income, and issues of hunger and malnutrition have been successfully addressed.

“What we want to do now is share the solution all over the Philippines and also, through the playbook, begin sharing the solution to other parts of the developing world,” Vera Yu told the Asian Journal.

The organization aims to share its solution by utilizing a playbook that outlines the

steps taken to achieve food security. This playbook will not only benefit communities in the Philippines but also serve as a guide for other developing regions. ARK has plans to test this solution in two countries, focusing on 2 billion people, particularly smallholder farmers and fisherfolk living on minimal incomes.

Jerry Topitzer emphasized the importance of breaking the cycle of smallholder mono-cropping and industrial farming, providing a sustainable, one-time investment alongside the resourcefulness and ingenuity of local communities.

The goal is to empower these communities to become self-reliant, breaking free from the continuous cycle of handouts.

“So that kind of onetime investment, rather than having to go back and continue to do handouts, is a model that we think has to be replicated across the developing world because that’s the way you get to a sustainable, locally empowered solution,” he added.

ARK Gala beyond the evening Expressing their excitement about collaborating again, the chefs emphasized their commitment to supporting ARK beyond the gala. Chef Siy envisioned a continued partnership with ARK, stating, “I think that you know, it is just so much more to look forward to, to be able to really be part of the thrust and in the mission of the organization.”

Chef Forés echoed this sentiment, saying, “I hope that we can do a lot more and help them in the future to raise more funds.” They both see the potential for a lasting partnership, envisioning a collective effort to contribute to ARK’s mission of addressing hunger and empowering communities.

As the ARK Gala 2023 unfolded on November 2, it was a night of culinary excellence, cultural celebration, and impactful initiatives.
