Balangiga bells not discussed during Duterte-Trump meeting PhIlIPPIne President rodrigo Duterte did not raise the issue of the Balangiga bells during his first bilateral meeting with United states President Donald trump on monday, nov. 13, according to Palace spokesperson harry roque. the church bells, likewise, were not mentioned in the joint statement of the Philippines and the U.s. released to media. earlier in July, Duterte demanded the U.s. to return the Balangiga bells back to the Philippines. he said the bells serve as “reminders of the gallantry and heroism” of filipinos who “resisted the American colonizers” and “sacrificed their lives in the process.” the U.s. government, for its part, vowed to work on a resolution to address the issue, but did not indicate a specific timeframe. on the final leg of his five-nation Asian tour, U.s. President Donald trump said on monday, november 13, that he and Philippine President rodrigo Duterte “had a great relationship” during their first in-person meeting on the sidelines of the 31st Association of southeast Asian nations (AseAn) summit held in manila. “We’ve had a great relationship,” trump told reporters monday. “this has been very successful. We’ve had many meetings today with many other leaders. the AseAn conference has been handled beautifully by

the president of the Philippines and your representatives. I’ve really enjoyed being here.” When asked by reporters if the issue of human rights was raised, trump did not respond. Duterte too kept mum and instead admonished reporters, saying it was a bilateral meeting, not a news conference. “Who, whoa,” said Duterte to reporters. “this is not a press statement. this is the bilateral meeting.” “We will be discussing matters that are of interest to both the Philippines and… with you around, guys, you are the spies,” Duterte told reporters at which trump laughed.

Kelly Fowler defeats fellow Fil-Am Ron Villanueva on an election night that was dominated by Democrats, Democrat Kelly fowler won the seat for Virginia’s house of Delegates 21st District (VA-21) against republican incumbent ron Villanueva. fowler, a real estate agent, was inspired to run for office after last year’s presidential election. she earned 53.4 percent of the vote over fellow fil-Am Villanueva, who garnered 46.4 percent. fowler’s filipino ancestry comes from both her grandfathers, who were from the Philippines and served in the United states navy, allowing them to be American citizens. A Virginia Beach local, fowler was a public school teacher before leading a team of real estate agents who specialize in military relocation.
