Filipino doctor denies financing foiled NY terror plot A FILIPINO doctor has denied accusations that he financed a thwarted jihadist plot targeting New York’s subway and Times Square in May 2016. Appearing in a Manila Court on Tuesday, November 7, orthopedic surgeon Russell Salic explained that authorities from the United States may have mistaken the money he sent to a charity as funding for attacks. “That’s not true,” Salic told reporters when asked about the allegations. “I just donated money without any malicious intent.” Salic’s lawyer Manuel Dalucapas also claimed that there is “no proof” showing the doctor wanted to bomb New York. PHILIPPINE President Rodrigo Duterte said Wednesday, November 8, he would tell U.S. President Donald Trump to “lay off” if the latter were to bring up the issue of human rights during their upcoming meeting. Upon speaking to reporters before
leaving for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Vietnam where he arrived Wednesday night, Duterte was ready to answer questions of how he would respond to human rights discussions. “You want to ask a question, I’ll give you an answer. Lay off,” said Duterte. “That is not your business. That is my business. I take
care of my country and I will nurture my country to health.” Since taking office in June of last year, Duterte has been condemned by international leaders and human rights groups for his war on drugs that has left thousands dead. Bloomberg previously reported that a White House official said Trump would send a clear message on human
rights principles during his meeting with Duterte, but the U.S. president hasn’t raised the subject before. In a Thursday, November 2, media briefing, U.S. National Security Adviser H .R. McMaster defended Trump’s reluctance to speak out about human rights abuses. “How much does it help to yell

DOT’s ‘Bring Home a Friend’ program launched in NY Two Filipinos in TIME’s 30 Most Influential Teens of 2017 NEW YORK – The Philippine Department of Tourism led the launch of one of the Philippines’ signature tourism campaigns Bring Home a Friend (BHAF) at the Philippine Center on October 30. The event saw members of the Filipino-American Community including second generation Filipino-Americans, the travel sector, media, and influencers grace the occasion during which the official BHAF campaign video featuring popular Filipino actor Piolo Pascual was shown for the first time in the U.S. Northeast. The evening’s guest of honor Tourism Undersecretary Katherine S. De Castro enjoined the overseas Filipino Community and all the Philippines’ friends in media and the travel industry to invite join the BHAF program and invite their
friends and colleagues to experience the Philippines’ firsthand. She noted the plaudits which the Philippines’ most popular destinations such as Boracay, Palawan, and Cebu, continue to collect from international visitors.
