FOR the first time, Los Angeles City Hall was illuminated in yellow, blue, crimson red and white to represent the Philippine flag on Friday, October 25 during a celebration for Filipino American History Month. The momentous occasion was witnessed by over 200 Fil-Ams representing local government, businesses and community organizations who gathered at the City Hall rotunda. Under the administration of
Mayor Eric Garcetti, there has been a record number of FilAms appointed to high positions in the city, including Board of Public Works Commissioner Jessica Caloza, Board of Water and Power Commissioner Susana Reyes, and Deputy Mayor for Budget and Innovation Miguel Sangalang, who all came together to host Friday night’s event. “It was a team effort at City Hall, and I worked closely with my Filipino American colleagues to host a historic celebration
VICE President Leni Robredo has opted to not answer the challenge of President Rodrigo Duterte, who recently said he would “surrender” his law enforcement powers to her for six months. In an ambush interview in Iloilo on Tuesday, October 29, the vice president instead stressed that important issues affecting the country should rather be confronted with solutions and not be countered with animosity and slurs. “Ako kasi, ayaw kong sagutin muna iyon kasi hindi ko alam kung gaano kaseryoso. Pero iyong sa akin lang, iyong mga mahahalaga at mga importanteng mga problema ng ating bansa, hindi naman dinadaan sa pagkapikon, hindi naman dinadaan sa pang-iinsulto (I do not want to answer that for now because I do not know how serious that was. But for me, the significant and important problems of our country should not be addressed through antagonism or throwing insults),” she told reporters in Iloilo. “Mahirap na papatulan ko, kasi hahaba lang iyong usapan. Iyong sa akin, parating solusyon iyong hinahanap natin (It’s hard if I react to his statements, it would only lengthen the discussion. For me, we always just seek for solution),” she added. Duterte on Monday, October 28, said he would surrender his “powers to enforce the law” to Robredo, and specifically let her take over his administration’s war on drugs, after the vice president criticized his bloody antidrug campaign. “The opposition, they always hanker on to riding on “Uh China doesn’t need our oil and gas. that connected the community, business, and government, because it takes all three sectors to move the needle and make lasting positive change,” Caloza, who led the organization efforts, said. Caloza, who previously was director of scheduling for Garcetti, was appointed and confirmed to the Board of Public Works last spring, becoming the first Filipina in that position. THE Philippines, not China, needs oil and gas resources in the South China Sea, Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. said. “Uh China doesn’t need our oil and gas. We do. And China is the only one offering to help develop it,” Locsin tweeted Monday, October 28. “A Filipino discovered humongous oil and gas just offshore Beijing. It’s rolling in minerals,” he added. The Philippines’ top diplomat tweeted this in response to Vice President Leni Robredo’s statement that China should first acknowledge the July 2016 arbitral ruling before pushing
