PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte saw their satisfaction ratings dip again in the latest survey conducted by OCTA Research. In the September 30 to October 4 poll, the president's rating dropped by 6 percentage points from the second to the third quarter of 2023, although 65 percent of the respondents remained content with his performance.

The decline was biggest in Metro Manila, a 12-percentage-point drop across all socioeconomic classes. The president's trust rating nationwide was 73 percent, lower than the 75 percent in OCTA's second-quarter survey in July. Only 7 percent of the respondents distrust him, while 19 percent are undecided. Marcos' trust ratings across major areas ranged from 66 percent to 78 percent, with the highest rating in the Visayas (78 percent) and the lowest in the National Capital Region at 66 percent.

Doubts abound about a new Alzheimer’s blood test FOR the first time, people worried about their risk of Alzheimer’s disease can go online, order a blood test, and receive results in the privacy of their homes. This might seem appealing on the surface, but the development has Alzheimer’s researchers and clinicians up in arms. The Quest Diagnostics blood test, ADDetect, measures elevated levels of amyloidbeta proteins, a signature characteristic of Alzheimer’s. Introduced in late July, the test is targeted primarily at people 50 and older who suspect their memory and thinking might be impaired and people with a family history of Alzheimer’s or genetic risks for the condition. Given Alzheimer’s is among the most feared of all medical conditions, along with cancer, this could be a sizable market, indeed. Nearly 7 million older adults in the U.S. have Alzheimer’s, and that number is expected to double by 2060 if medical breakthroughs don’t occur. But Alzheimer’s researchers and clinicians aren’t convinced the Quest test is backed by sound scientific research. The possibility of false-positive results is high, as is the likelihood that older adults won’t understand the significance of their results, they say. The test should be taken only under a physician’s supervision, if at all, they advise. And, priced originally at $399 (recently discounted to $299) and not covered by insurance, it isn’t cheap. u PAGE 3

MANILA, Philippines — More U.S. airlines may be flying to the Philippines following the arrival on Monday, October 30 of the first nonstop flight by an American carrier from mainland U.S. to Manila. In a post on X, U.S. Ambassador MaryKay Carlson said the arrival of United Airlines Flight UA 191 in Manila from San Francisco was a “momentous” event in trans-Pacific travel – one that is “accelerating opportunities and strengthening connections between the two countries.” A water cannon salute welcomed Flight UA 191 at the Ninoy Aquino International

Airport Terminal 3 on Monday, October 30. Carlson said the United flight would be the “first of many more air links between our countries” as she joined other officials in a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the milestone. “The San Francisco-Manila flight is indeed the first time a U.S. airline has flown between the U.S. mainland and the Philippines, Manila. So, we are just really, really pleased to be high in the air and to be leading this new service,” Marcel Fuchs, United’s managing director of international sales, told reporters on Monday. Sleeping at cemeteries and other Filipino All Souls Day traditions by Andrei YuvAllos Inquirer.net

ALL Souls Day is a very meaningful holiday in the Philippines. Filipinos put a premium on family and tradition, which means even those who have already passed are still remembered and honored—especially on this day. Undas, as it’s called in the Philippines, is held annually on Oct. 1st and 2nd, lining up with the Catholic celebrations of All Saints and All Souls Day. For most families, it’s a reunion of sorts. People usually return to their home provinces in order to spend the day (and sometimes

night) with their families at cemeteries to make sure that the deceased know that they’re still being remembered and celebrated. Much like the Latin community, many of our traditions and observances were inherited by our shared colonizers: the Spanish. This is why some traditions are similar to those who celebrate Dia de los Muertos in many parts of the world. Here are some yearly traditions that many Filipinos observe during Undas.
