THE United States is proud to have supported the Philippine government in liberating Marawi City from Islamic State (IS)-inspired Maute terrorists. Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte declared the city liberated on October 17 after insurgent leaders Isnilon Hapilon and Omar Maute were killed by the government troops. Following October 23, the country’s Department of National Defense (DND) declared Marawi siege over.

Since the terrorist group’ attack on May 23, the U.S. has provided intelligence, reconnaissance, and surveillance support to the Philippine army. They also donated at least P2.84 billion worth of equipments, which include drones, guns, and ammunitions. Speaking before the before the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines (FOCAP), U.S. Ambassador Sung Kim hailed the Philippine military’s victory in its battle against Maute terrorists. “We are proud to have supported the Armed Forces of the Philip-

pines (AFP) as they defeated the terrorist insurrection in Marawi City,” Kim said. “As [U.S. Defense] Secretary Mattis made clear earlier this week, we commend the outstanding work of the Philippine military in retaking Marawi. They deserve great respect and appreciation,” he added. Mattis earlier lauded the AFP for its effort in reclaiming Marawi, saying its triumph has sent a “very strong message” to terrorists. The U.S. government likewise expressed anew its condolences

to the victims of the conflict as they reiterated their support for the rehabilitation of the city. “I also would like to again offer our deepest condolences to the people of the Philippines for the suffering and the loss of life during the five months’ ordeal,” Kim said. “We will continue to support the Philippines’ government as it begins to rehabilitate Marawi and the surrounding area,” he added. The U.S. government has donated P730 million ($14.3 million) for the rehabilitation of Marawi

City. According to Kim, these include 153 million pesos in humanitarian assistance and more than 577 million pesos “to support the early recovery, stabilization, and rehabilitation of Marawi and the surrounding area.” The U.S. government further expressed support to “educational programs that bring together students and women leaders to explore innovative ways to address the challenges facing the people of Marawi and the Mindanao region.” ■

US running out of Bongbong Marcos nurses, Philippines scores in new PET a historical source order vs Comelec

AN editorial by The New York Times once expressed in 1956 that, “The nationwide shortage of nurses is likely to reach crisis proportions.” Now over six decades later, the shortage again seems far from being resolved due to a rising elderly population, a large amount of retiring nurses, and the challenge to recruit new nurses. With over three million registered nurses (RNs), and over 800,000 licensed practical nurses (LPNs) in the United States, nursing is said to be among the nation’s fastest-growing occupations.

THERE are no conditions attached to the programs of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in the Philippines, Washington’s top diplomat said last week. U.S. Ambassador Sung Kim In a forum Philstar.com photo with the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines (FOCAP), U.S. Ambassador Sung Kim affirmed that the USAID programs are also unaffected by the U.S.’ concerns over the alleged human rights issues in the Philippines. “Our USAID program is not conditional,” Kim said on Thursday, October 26. “In fact, we have a long history of providing very

brothers and sisters. Their core aspiration is of course genuine autonomy and meaningful selfgovernance,” de Lima said in a statement Tuesday, October 31. WITH a tough-talking president soon having a fiery litigator as his mouthpiece, things may get “explosive” in Malacañang, incoming Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque himself warned. Roque, a human rights lawyer known for his tirades and outspoken opinion, is set to replace Ernesto Abella as Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s spokesperson on November 6. Speaking to reporters on Mon-

day, October 30, Roque said he has warned the president about his personality. “I think it’s because I’m even more controversial than him (Duterte) so together we could be explosive. I warned the president about that and he says fine,” said Roque, who’s also the Kabayan Party-list representative. Last week, Duterte confirmed that Roque will succeed as his new spokesperson. The president remarked that the solon fits in his new role since both of them “speak in a playful language.” He added that Roque will also be given a rank of “secretary.” Duterte, however, failed to cite specific reasons for dismissing Abella, who has a rank of undersecretary and is a pastor by profession. He insisted that changing his spokesperson was his “personal decision.” “That is my personal decision. I am not about to explain why I did it,” a tight-lipped Duterte said. Roque served as the lawyer of the victims of the Maguindanao
