Fil-Am labor leader Larry Itliong DATELINE USA 2020 Census: Asian inducted into California Hall of Fame Americans in focus FROM THE AJPRESS NEWS TEAM ACROSS AMERICA

THE U.S. Census Bureau continues to release information from the 2020 Census in order to provide rich information about the changing population of the United States. From the apportionment counts data in April to the redistricting data in August, each data set from the 2020 Census has progressively unveiled insights about the Asian American community. According to recent redistricting data results from the 2020 Census, there was a noticeable increase in the Asian-specific populations. Over 24 million people (7.2% of the total population) identified as “Asian alone or in combination.” “Asian alone” refers to people who reported Asian and did not report any other race. “Asian alone or in combination” consists of those respondents who reported Asian, whether or not they reported any other races. The Asian alone population grew by 35.5% between 2010 and 2020. Approximately 19.9 million people (6% of all respondents) idenu PAGE A5

FILIPINO American labor activist Larry Itliong is among the six notable individuals posthumously inducted into the California Hall of Fame. California Gov. Gavin Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom on Tuesday, October 12, announced the honorees for the California Hall of

Fame 14th class through a webcast streamed by the California Museum. “Sometimes the Hall of Fame gives us the opportunity to bring outstanding Californians out of the shadows when their contributions to society have been largely overlooked in history books,” said Siebel. “And there is no better example of that than Larry Itliong.”

CA’s redistricting process gives citizens lead roles TWO members of California’s Citizens Redistricting Commission joined a press briefing hosted by Ethnic Media Services on Oct. 11 to discuss the process of drawing new political boundaries for the next decade. Sara Sadhwani, chair of the commission, and colleague Linda Akutagawa joined Paul Mitchell, a national expert on redistricting and demographics, to discuss the process in California. “It’s one of the most under-appreciated, but also one of the most important jobs out there,” Akutagawa said. “It’s important that all of us have a voice in this process.” California is a pioneer in efforts to end the traditional political “gerrymandering” that for centuries has enabled incumbent politicians to choose their voters via the redistricting process. Typically, this was done by making districts less competitive, either by “packing” voters expected to vote a certain way together so their views aren’t reflected in neighboring districts, or “cracking” communities into several larger districts where their voices will be drowned

Newsom added, “We all benefit from Larry’s leadership and unapologetic advocacy.” Itliong, according to his description on California Museum’s website, was one of the most important civil rights leaders of the 20th century and a father of the West Coast labor movement. MANILA — Anything is possible until November 15, presidential aspirant Sen. Manny Pacquiao said on Friday, October 15, when asked on a possible team-up with Vice President Leni Robredo who is also vying for the top government post in next year’s elections. MANILA — Presidential adviser for entrepreneurship Joey Concepcion has requested the government to include countries in North America, Canada and some European countries in the “green list” to allow travelers from these countries to enjoy facility-free quarantine upon arrival in the Philippines. At Go Negosyo’s Let’s Go Bakuna town hall meeting on Friday, October 15, Concepcion said other countries such as Thailand and Singapore are starting to open up by allowing

quarantine-free travel for vaccinated passengers from the U.S. “Hopefully, we get to move towards that level,” he said. “I think because of our vaccination rate there is a good chance that we can start really opening up our businesses more freely,” Philippine Ambassador to the U.S. Jose Manuel Romualdez said. On Friday, October 15, Malacañang announced that fully vaccinated travelers from “green list” countries are no longer required to undergo facility-based quarantine. u PAGE A3
