“We are treated as one giant group, but we are not a monolith,” said Dr. Bryant Lin, a Stanford professor of medicine, who in 2018 co-founded the Center for Asian Health Research and Education with Dr. Latha Palaniappan. The two doctors currently co-direct the Center, based at Stanford, with the aim of driving better health outcomes for Asian Americans.

“The capacity to disaggregate data for AAPIs within the electronic health records is there. But the

political will and the leadership across health care systems is still lacking,” said Dr. Winston Wong, a scholar-in-residence at the UCLA Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Equity.

At an Ethnic Media Services briefing Sept. 16, co-hosted by the Stanford Medicine Center for Asian Health Research and Education, Lin noted that disaggregating data was not as simple as just adding boxes to the clinic check-in sheet.

“We’re having trouble, even at Stanford. There are definitely issues, given the history of systemic racism, that leads to these concerns about selfreporting,” he said.

The critical need for disaggregated data became especially acute during the COVID-19 pandemic. News headlines screamed that the virus was primarily killing and hospitalizing Black and Latino people.Butin New York, which had the highest rates of infection early on in the pandemic, it was actually Chinese Americans who had the highest rates of hospitalizations, reported Wong.

Marcos mentioned that they enacted policies “to further liberalize our economy and welcome more foreign investment to our shores.”

“That was never seen as a news headline,” he said, attributing it to a lack of data.

In Northwest Arkansas, the number one group that was getting hospitalized and dying from COVID were the Marshallese people of the Micronesian diaspora, noted Wong. Marshallese people were particularly hard-hit as they worked in poultry-packaging plants and lived in very crowded conditions. And in New Jersey, there was a high rate of hospitalizations among Bangladeshi people.

“This kind of data is only identified at this point by the activists, the community providers, the physicians and nurses who care for that community because they’re providing the culturally competent and linguistically accessible care to these populations,” said Wong, adding that it is not captured at the statewide level, and used as a tool for allocation of resources to hardhit communities.

And oxidative stress may occur, releasing free radicals that damage cells and tissue.Older adults are especially vulnerable to air pollution’s harmful effects because of reduced lung capacity and pollutants’ potential to exacerbate conditions such as respiratory illnesses and heart disease. Also, air pollution’s effects accumulate over time, and the longer people live the more risks they may encounter.

in a 2018 statement, Amnesty said: "From 1972 to 1981, some 70,000 people were imprisoned and 34,000 were tortured; over 3,200 people were killed."

One of the areas of most concern to Park is Alzheimer’s’ research.

One report, published in the Proceedings of the national Academy of Sciences, found that the risk of dementia declined significantly in women 74 and older following a decadelong reduction in two types of air pollution: nitrogen dioxide, a gaseous byproduct of emissions from motor vehicles, industrial sources, and natural events such as wildfires; and fine particulate matter, a mix of extremely small solids and liquids arising from similar sources.

The lack of disaggregated data may be due to very low levels of research participation among Asian Americans, said Dr. van Ta Park, a professor at the university of California San Francisco’s School of nursing, in the Department of Community Health Systems.

in addition to population-wide studies, nearly 20 scientific laboratories across the world are studying how air pollution contributes to dementia in animals. At uSC, Caleb Finch, a professor who studies the neurobiology of aging, is coprincipal investigator for a fiveyear, $11.5 million grant from the national institute on Aging to study how air pollution in urban areas informs the risk of dementia and accelerated brain aging.Among the questions that Finch said need to be addressed are: Which areas of the brain appear most vulnerable to air pollutants? When are people most at risk? How long does

the brain. Extremely tiny particles — a human hair is at least 30 times as large as the largest particle — may travel from the nasal cavities to the brain via the olfactory (smell) system, putting the brain’s immune system on high alert.

Last year, in one of the largest u.S. studies to date, a different set of researchers examined the link between long-term exposure to fine particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide among 12 million Medicare beneficiaries with diagnoses of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Exposure to high levels of these pollutants appeared to accelerate cognitive decline that was already relatively advanced, leading to an increase in diagnoses, researchers concluded.

Park is also the lead researcher of an niH/niA r24 grant called, “Collaborative Approach for AAPi research and Education.” The goal of CArE is to recruit 10,000 AAPi who are interested in participating in research. Both studies are national in scope and account for other factors that could affect results, such as participants’ socioeconomic status, neighborhood characteristics, preexisting medical conditions, and lifestyle choices such as smoking. What might explain their results? “We think that when air pollution levels are reduced, the brain is better able to recover” from previous environmental insults, said Xinhui Wang, an assistant professor of research neurology at the university of Southern California’s medical school. This hypothesis needs to be examined further in animal studies and through brain imaging, she suggested.

She said an officer boxed her ears, fondled her breasts and played russian roulette with a gun while interrogating her about his whereabouts.

Quach also noted that fewer COviD resources were devoted to the AAPi community, because

newer research suggests that older adults’ cognition is affected even when exposures are below standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency. “With older adults, there really is no level at which air pollution is safe,” said Jennifer Ailshire, an associate professor of gerontology and sociology at the university of Southern California.it’simportant to keep on reducing the standards for these pollutants,” said Antonella Zanobetti, principal research scientist for environmental health at Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health. With colleagues, she has a national institute on Aging grant to study how air pollution affects the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias among Medicare beneficiaries. in 2019, her work showed that higher levels of fine particulate matter are linked to more hospitalizations among older adults with dementia — a marker of disease progression.

But she said the true scale of the abuses may never be known "given the immensity and pervasiveness of violations during that time."

Air pollution is only one of many factors that influence cognitive decline and dementia, researchers agree, and results of this kind establish associations, not causation.

Marcos admitted about 50,000 people had been arrested in the first few years of martial law, while 71 detainees told them they had been tortured, Jones said.Amnesty published their findings in 1976, with their conclusion that "torture was used freely and with extreme cruelty, often over long periods."

A second report in PLOS Medicine, relying on the same sample of more than 2,200 older women, found that lower levels of these pollutants were associated with a slower rate of cognitive decline. in areas where air quality improvement was most notable, the rate of cognitive decline was delayed by up to 1.6 years, depending on the test.

and already has recruited 9,300 participants who speak Chinese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Hindi, Korean, vietnamese, and Samoan through its online portal.

Another study, published a couple of years later, extended those findings by reporting that air pollution’s cognitive effects are magnified in older adults living in disadvantaged neighborhoods where pollution levels tend to be highest. The chronic stress that residents of these neighborhoods experience may “increase the rate at which neurons are damaged by toxic challenges,” the authors wrote.

During the past decade, a growing body of research has shown that air pollution harms older adults’ brains, contributing to cognitive decline and dementia. What hasn’t been clear is whether improving air quality would benefit brain health. Two studies published this year by researchers at six universities and the national institute on Aging provide the first evidence of such benefits in an older population.

Yet recognition of the potential cognitive consequences of air pollution is relatively recent. Following several small studies, the first national study demonstrating a link between air pollution and cognition in a diverse sample of older men and women was published in 2014. it found that seniors living in areas with high levels of fine particulate matter were more likely to experience cognitive problems than people living in less polluted areas.

We have instructed the consulates to coordinate and have them in one place, possibly at the Kalayaan Hall in our consulate in New York, where the President can hopefully meet them and reiterate the message of unity, which he believes is the only way we can surpass the challenges and problems that the world faces today. the country’s human rights situation.Theresult is that HRC member states now appear less inclined to take a strong action on the Philippines at the 51st session that begins Monday in Geneva. This mindset runs counter to the continuing human rights calamity in the Philippines. Drug-related killings remain commonplace. Dahas, a program of the University of the Philippines’ Third World Studies Center, found by looking at police and media reports that there were more drug-related killings—in which the victim had alleged links to the illicit drug trade—in July, the first month of the Marcos Jr. presidency, than in June, the last month of the Duterte administration.

All UN HRC member states should support a resolution at the upcoming session to ensure continued, strong scrutiny of the Philippine situation. The council needs to send a message that a new presidency is not a clean slate to commit new abuses.

The pessimism was evident in 52 percent of respondents who said it will take more than two years for the country’s economy to recover from the pandemic, in contrast to projections by economic managers that recovery will happen this year.

So far, Mr. Marcos has not introduced measures to improve human rights in the country. Instead, he has promised to continue Duterte’s “drug war.” He has not convened a new Commission on Human Rights nor indicated he will appoint qualified, independent human rights experts who will uphold the commission’s constitutional mandate to investigate and help prosecute cases.

THE United Nations has been criticized in the past about its perceived failures, with critics saying that its powerful body – the Security Council – has been ineffective in maintaining peace and security and easing tensions between nations as some disputes have escalated into armed conflicts, pointing to the war in Ukraine as a recent example.Others also accuse the UN of being inefficient when it comes to achieving the goal of mitigating hunger and poverty despite the billions of dollars being spent on economic and social development programs. In fact, the relevance of the 76-year-old organization in today’s world is being questioned by some sectors who claim that it is continually going on a decline and nearing obsolescence, supposedly because of its bureaucratic

In a 2022 CEO survey conducted from July to August this year by the PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Philippines and the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP), 67 percent of 119 business leaders ranked corruption as the No. 1 economic obstacle.

Not that corruption is new in the Philippines, which slid down in Transparency International’s global corruption index in 2021, ranking 117th out of 180 countries, two notches below its 2020 ranking.Thecost of corruption is mind-boggling. In 2019, Deputy Ombudsman Cyril Ramos estimated that the country was losing P700 billion every year to corruption, making the Philippines the sixth most corrupt nation in the Asia Pacific.

HAS the human rights situation in the Philippines improved, as some United Nations Human Rights Council (UN HRC) member states want to Sincebelieve?Ferdinand Marcos Jr. became president two months ago, Philippine press reports about killings in the “war on drugs” seem to have decreased. Perhaps because the evervolatile Rodrigo Duterte left office, there is less sense of urgency around “drug war” violence. It was thus a disappointment for many that President Marcos Jr. did not mention corruption, nor how his administration would tackle it, in his first State of the Nation Address in July. But such symbolic gesture and rhetoric are not enough. After all, Rodrigo Duterte failed miserably when he promised “not even a whiff” of corruption will happen during his watch, with his administration embroiled in the biggest corruption scandal during the pandemic. The Marcos Jr. administration would do well to listen to the sentiments expressed by business leaders, who will be the government’s partner in economic recovery. The PwC-MAP survey is a clear message that government corruption is utterly unacceptable during these adverse times when the ranks of the poor keep rising, and many businesses are struggling to get back on their feet.

In June, the International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor submitted a request to the court to resume the investigation into “drug war” killings, which it paused last November at the Philippine government’s request. The prosecutor’s request to reopen the investigation came after he concluded that the government was not taking adequate steps to ensure accountability at the domestic level. The new government should demonstrate that it will brook no corruption by holding to account individuals involved in graft and other anomalies, even if they are allies. No doubt the participation of President Marcos is an opportunity for the country to take center stage because of the high level of interest on what the President will say during his speech. While we are still dependent on fossil fuel, we have to start looking at the future and, on many occasions, the President has talked about clean energy sources, particularly small modular reactors that hopefully would be available to the world initially in the next year or so. The same results are also reflected in the latest Pew Research Center survey released last month, with “a note of positivity” also seen among survey respondents (65 percent) across 19 nations regarding their view of the UN. Interestingly, a big number of people are optimistic that “the problems facing their country can be solved by working with other countries,” with 64 percent of the respondents in the 2022 survey saying they believe “many problems can be solved by working together,” as against 31 percent who say that few problems can be solved by way of international cooperation. When we buy stuff, we think we own it. The truth is the stuff owns us.

For those who obtained their legal permanent residence status through marriage based petition by their U.S. Citizen spouse of less than 2 years marriage, the legal permanent residence status conferred is usually a “conditional legal permanent residence” valid only for 2 years. The couple would need to sign and file a joint petition to remove this condition prior to the expiration of the 2 years or the conditional legal permanent resident spouse would fall out of status.

Money and your ego

More so for the young ones of today, the incline on how to become fiscally responsible has become even more of a slippery slope, with so much distraction in available stuff for sale in the malls and on the internet. It does not help that media has shed off all pretenses and has become one efficient selling machine, hawking an endless array of goods and services knowing which hot buttons to push to get us to part with our hard-earned cash.

4 ways filing for divorce can benefit your immigration case

There are no shortcuts in arriving at a decision to live a simple life. Sometimes, one has to go through a personal hell experiencing an inner fatigue and helplessness over the never-ending chase for the almighty dollar and quality of life in order to come to a conclusion that there has to be a better way than what is commonly believed.

“It reminded me of every time I saw someone belting it out on karaoke back home – be it at a family reunion or a barkada night out, or outside of a grocery store in the mall, or even at one of those side-street karinderias.”

Writing the story became Lee’s way of holding on to the person that she knew her grandmother to be, especially after she lost herself to Alzheimer’s. She wrote the manuscript while she was in graduate school living with her grandmother Mama Jessie in New York.

The educational emphasis to build healthy self esteem in the young has taken an unpleasant turn sometimes sadly resulting in producing a generation of self-absorbed individuals with huge egos, who honestly believe that they can buy their way into gaining the respect of their peers or the people around them because they can buy things or afford surgical procedures to get a new look. But one day, the young have

to learn about money in the most expensive way — often, through bad experience.

Submitting the manuscript was just the first hurdle. Lee quickly realized that there was just so much uncertainty going around when the book wasMultipleacquired. questions bothered her mind. Would publishing carry on despite the pandemic? Would the world look the same once the book is released? Would she live through the pandemic to see this day come?

“My Mama Jessie passed away during that season – not due to COVID, but due to complications from her pre-existing conditions,” she recalled. “The manuscript actually sold on the day that she died. I’d like to think that that was her way of still looking out for me.”

Think of it this way. If you buy a new car which you have to pay on installment for the next five or six years, you have just signed yourself on to work for the next five years to pay it off. If you love your work and can see yourself doing it for the same company for the next five years, then driving a new car and being able to pay for it are bonuses of the work that you love to do. But if you hate your job, it becomes a big problem. As Shakespeare would say.“Aye there’s the rub…” Overwhelming financial problems will prevent you from living Manysimply.who have taken the simple life path will tell you that being debt-free can be very liberating. I was already a fan of her art and I had seen her work with so many big names in kid lit already, both in the Philippines and abroad,” she said. “I know the book is just so much better because of all the love and longing and pride for home that she put into it.”

4. Married aliens in nonimmigrant visas and those without status

COUPLES get divorced for various reasons. California is a no fault state. The reasons why a couple is getting divorced are often irrelevant to the issues of the family law case. Divorce is often a difficult and negative experience for most families. However, getting divorce may have some unintended benefits in the immigration law arena. Four situations in which filing for divorce can be beneficial to your immigration case are as follows:

The problem arises when the marriage is in trouble. Often it becomes difficult to obtain the cooperation of the U.S. Citizen spouse specially when the couple has separated. U.S. Citizen spouse often refuse to sign the I-751 for or appear at the I-751 interview if one is set by the USCIS. Filing for divorce would terminate the marriage and allow you to file a “waiver” of the joint petition to remove the conditional LPR status based on entering into the marriage in good faith. Terminating the marriage by filing a divorce is a requirement in order to file the “waiver.” It is important to time this correctly as soon as the marriage starts falling apart because by terminating the marriage early on, you might be able to file the waiver before the expiration of your 2 year conditional LPR thus allowing you to extend your LPR status in 1 year increments until a final decision is made in your case.

only when a seller finds a buyer actually willing to pay the price he sets.Understanding and managing money is a survival skill. We all have a learning curve on survival skills. When it comes to money, some muster the concept and its practice faster than most. On the average though, the learning curve about money is steep.

If we bought the stuff on credit, then we have contracted a set time in our future to pay for the stuff by working our tail off. We now are responsible for its care, upkeep or maintenance, its use, storage and final disposition. Pretty soon, we are out of living space and checking out those companies that rent out storage spaces.

If your parents are legal permanent residents, getting divorced will convert you back single status making you eligible to be petitioned by your legal permanent resident parents under the family based second preference (F2b) category if you are 21 years old or older or under the family based second preference A (F2a) if you are under 21 years of age.

petition after your divorce under the same category inherits the previous petition’s priority date under 9 FAM 42.43 N10 and 8 CFR 204.2(h), Part 205. However, success of such argument is not clear since the old petition was automatically revoked the moment you married. The best thing that can be done in this situation is to have your LPR parent repetition you as an F2A or F2b even if you are unable to reclaim the previous petition’s priority date.

If you were petitioned for legal permanent residence by your U.S. Citizen parent as a married son or daughter 21 years old or over, you are classified in immigration law under family sponsored third preference (F3) which usually carries a long wait time. The wait time for Filipinos for example is currently 22 years. The priority date is normally the date the petition was initially filed by your U.S. Citizen parents. If you get divorced, you revert back to single status and your category automatically becomes reclassified to first preference (F1) where the waiting time is substantially shorter. For example, for Filipinos the wait time under F1 category is 10 years shorter than F3 category. This means if your parents filed your immigration petition 12 years ago, then you can adjust to a green card now instead of waiting another 10 years.

She has made a name as an illustrator of children’s books—she already did the art for nine titles published in the United States, including Filipino American Erin Entrada Kelly’s Newborn Medal-winning “Hello Universe” (soon to be a Netflix series).

For those who married after they were petitioned by their LPR parents (F2A and F2B), the petition is automatically revoked under operation of law the moment you get married and cannot be reclaimed by a divorce. In theory, it can be argued that filing a subsequent

Money is a major consideration in deciding to simplify one’s life. Let’s face it. Our attitude and relationship towards money have a lot to do with it. If you are always strapped for money because you are too deeply buried in debt, then money has you in a stranglehold. You have to work longer, harder hours in order to pay off the debt.

Sophia Lee says it’s an honor...

Describing it further, she said it felt surreal and was “like breathing out after a long time holding your breath.”

“I held in my hands certain proof that my dream had come true, that I had willed it into existence. It reaffirmed my conviction too that this was what I was meant to be doing,” Lee shared when asked about how it felt holding the book for the first time.

She remembered the songs her Lola used to sing for her, it didn’t matter if it was from Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Basil Valdez, or Nora Aunor. “There is always singing in Lola’s house,” Lee writes in the book, reminiscing the summer days she spent visiting her Lola’s house in Tarlac.

“A book is such a quiet thing, starting out as a whisper in your mind until you convince yourself to commit the words to paper,” she explained. “But it’s also an act of faith – you write the story unsure if it’s going to sell or be appreciated by anyone other than yourself, and you keep committing to it until you see it through to the end of the publishing process.”

3. Conditional legal permanent residents in failed marriages

Whimsical wants camouflage as basic needs. The result: in early adulthood, many already face financial insolvency, unable to save and unable to understand why money has them in a stranglehold, unable to spread their wings and fly, their wings clipped by acquiring too much stuff and in the process, too much debt.

For those who enter the U.S. as a non-immigrant and are separated from their spouse but still married, filing a divorce would open up opportunities in case they meet a new significant other who is a U.S. Citizen and who can petition them as an immediate relative. This is usually the fastest of process in obtaining legal permanent

residence. In countries such as the Philippines where there is no divorce, many people come to the U.S. to start a new life after they have been separated from their old spouse (often still married to them). Even if the alien over stays their status as a visitor, the alien can still adjust to that of a legal permanent residence if petitioned by a U.S. Citizen spouse. If the alien was never inspected, the alien can still adjust to legal permanent residence if they are grandfathered under INA 245(i) and there are no special restrictions on their status. To be grandfathered under INA 245(i), the alien must have been a beneficiary of a legal permanent residence petition filed no later than April 30, 2001.Finally, a common concern of divorcing immigrants is “What happens if my spouse refuses to sign the divorce papers?” The truth is you do not need your spouse’s signature to obtain a divorce in California. You only need to provide your spouse notice that you filed a divorce by personally serving your spouse the divorce petition and summons. In countries that are members of the Hague Convention, special procedures need to be followed to effect service. So yes it is possible to divorce your spouse even if your spouse is in a country that does not recognize divorce among its citizens such as the Philippines. For some immigrants, filing for divorce opens up opportunities in this land of milk and honey.
