SEVERAL groups within the Filipino American community are raising concerns regarding U.S. President Joe Biden’s invitation to Philippine President Ferdinand “Bong Bong” Marcos, Jr. for an official visit.

“Make no mistake.  This visit will be a critical test of President Biden’s respect for the rule of law.  There should be no official invitation unless Marcos repudiates Duterte’s murderous administration and stops the assaults on the Philippines’ constitutional democracy,” said John Cavanagh, Senior Fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies.

Having regained momentum, Eala backed Havlickova into a 40-15 hole and converted championship points after the tournament second seed slapped a backhand low into the net.

“I think both of us were tired,” she later said during the press conference. “It’s normal in a final match. We’re not going to be fresh.”Eala strung five masterful games to take the first set against the Czech, but she had quite a battle in her hands in the second set after Havlickova took a 4-3 lead.“Ithink she did hold out really well, especially in the second set,” she said of her foe, who played a total of three matches on Friday.

Masks are strongly recommended in all indoor settings including schools, school buses and childcare, and may be required by your school district or county. The right mask matters! Kids are best protected with well-fitting N95, KN95, KF94, or surgical masks.

After the trophy presentation, the group came together and the Inquirer asked if anyone had a Philippine flag. Someone unfurled a huge one and Eala graciously posed with it and the crowd.“It’s very overwhelming right now. But I think this is a huge step for me personally as well. I’m super happy to represent my country and do something with a big platform, being able to inspire other younger people,”

“That’s also what I tried to show [to] people who look up to me, to think with a clear head and to not act irrationally.”

Call your child’s healthcare provider or health clinic to get your child vaccinated. Or go to MyTurn.ca.gov or call 833-422-4255 to find a vaccination site near you.

She said the achievement of a wall of immunity, or 100 percent of the target population, was one of the conditions imposed by the president, but “since we’re 6 percent away from that, then it’s time.”“We’re doing this in stages, in phases, so that we can have feedback on whether or not these new policies are working, and how to make them more efficient so that hopefully by the end of the year we might be able to be voluntarily masked indoors as well,” she added.

“We are happy to announce that we are 6 percent away from the wall of immunity, that is why we are emboldened [in relaxing the rule] on face masks,” Press Secretary Trixie Cruz Angeles said in a press briefing.

Some lawmakers have joined health professionals in opposing the easing of the mask policy. Iloilo Rep. Janette Garin on Monday described as “premature” the IATF’s recommendation to make the wearing of a face mask optional as it would send a “mixed signal” wherein the public might get the impression that COVID-19 booster shots were unnecessary.

On Monday, the Department of Health said that daily reported COVID-19 cases continued to decline for the fourth straight week. The seven-day average detected cases fell to 2,197, which was 10 percent lower than the previous week’s 2,449 average daily cases.

Of the 15,379 new cases confirmed by laboratory tests, 12 were in severe or critical condition which brought the current total severe and critical cases to 727 from 768 last week.

These include emergency procurements, indemnification for vaccine side effects, and special risk allowances for healthcare workers.

Marcos has also extended the state of calamity due to the pandemic for three more months, “but only for the purpose of preserving the benefits under it,” according to Angeles.

“The virus is not any less serious or dangerous just because we’ve decided that masks are optional. We should not be lulled into a false sense of safety,” Hontiveros said.“Let’s not forget that we have reopened most of the economy and can live our daily lives now partially thanks to the protection of masks,” she added.

For Kabataan Rep. Raoul Danniel Manuel, the Marcos administration seemed “overly confident” in making the use of a face mask optional in outdoor areas.“Policies like making masks optional in outdoor spaces arise when health experts and professionals take the back seat in national decision-making. Public officials should be the first to educate their constituents about COVID-19, rather than let the people be harmed by dangerously misguided policies,” he said.

The relaxed mask mandate was initiated by Cebu despite initial concerns from the national government.OnSunday, September 11 Negros Occidental adopted the optional use of face masks in outdoor settings.

3. Those who are immunocompromised and 60 years old or older should get boosted as soon as possible Dr. Maggie Park, public health officer of San Joaquin County’s Public Health Services, noted that those who are immunocompromised or 60 years or older — who are more likely than the average person to suffer more severe effects of coronavirus — should not wait to get the updated booster.

“The critical importance of getting a booster is not because you don’t want to get a mild case, but because you want to prevent a serious illness,” Chavez explained.

The updated Pfizer booster has been cleared for anyone 12 years and older, while Moderna’s new booster is available for those 18 andFollowingolder. the recommendations laid out by the CDC and the FDA, officials from the California Dept. of Public Health and community health leaders are preparing to vaccinate residents across the Golden State, which is expected to receive 1 million updated booster shots in the coming weeks.“The approval of an updated booster vaccine is great news as over the past two and a half years, Covid vaccines have been a tremendous tool that has literally saved millions of lives, help us protect us against the worst outcomes, and frankly, helped us move on as a community and as a state,” Dr. Gil Chavez, deputy director for the CDPH’s Center of Infectious Diseases, said in a press briefing held on Wednesday, Sept. 7.

“It’s always been a concern for us to make sure that our vaccine access is equitable, that everyone who needs access has access,” he said.

As with the initial rollout of the booster in late 2021, you can “mix and match.” For example, if you received the initial full dose of Moderna, you may receive the Pfizer booster, Chavez said.

But that doesn’t mean individuals should forego plans to get the new booster shot, Park said.“People think COVID is over, but this virus isn’t going away just because we want it to. It’s evolving. It’s actually becoming more highly transmissible and getting smarter about evading our immunity, whether that’s natural immunity from prior infection or immunity from vaccination,” Park said, noting that the newer subvariants have been able to infect those who have been vaccinated because of the ever-adapting nature of viruses.

Recent CDC data found that those who have received one or two booster shots have a 0.024% chance of being hospitalized with COVID-19 complications — for individuals under 50 years old, that chance lowers to 0.014%.

Chavez added that those who completed the initial series of coronavirus vaccines — i.e. received the necessary two-dose round of either Pfizer or Moderna or the one-and-done Johnson & Johnson shot — are eligible for theButvaccine.as communities are learning to “live with the virus,” information about booster shots may be confusing. Here are five things to know about the updated coronavirus vaccines, according to California’s top health experts.

2. Individuals who received the previous booster are eligible for the new one

With the Moderna and PfizerBioNTech vaccines, individuals needed two shots administered weeks apart, and those who received the Johnson & Johnson shot only needed one dose.

But rather, they make the chances of hospitalization, the need for intensive care, and death far, far less likely.

replace the old ones and access to them will be the same as previous vaccine rollouts

Chavez noted that the updated booster shots from Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech will replace the previous boosters, which will no longer be available.

1. The new boosters will

As previously reported in the Asian Journal, booster shots of vaccines offer smaller doses of immunity that are administered after receiving a full dose.

5. As with the flu, there may be the need for an annual booster shot for maximum protection

Chavez also noted that these updated boosters would make it far less likely to experience severe infections, reminding everyone that vaccines don’t completely prevent infection, but that they protect from the more severe causes of the disease.

Despite the hesitance to continue receiving vaccine boosters to protect against the coronavirus, doctors still maintain the importance of updating your immunity. As the virus continues to evolve, Chavez said that there’s a strong likelihood that COVID-19 boosters will provide necessary protection against serious illness for the foreseeable future.

He also noted that the updated booster will be available in primary care clinics, pharmacies and other providers that have previously offered the COVID-19 vaccine, and that they continue to be free of charge.

5 things to know about the Omicron-targeting COVID-19 booster

THIS month, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officially endorsed the new COVID-19 booster shots, which were updated to target both the original strain and the Omicron subvariants of the coronavirus.

The endorsement followed the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) approval of the reformulations of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines. In recent months, the omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants have been the primary source of infection across the U.S., prompting Moderna and Pfizer and BioNTech to update their vaccines to combat these new strains.

Of all our neighbors in Southeast Asia, Indonesia perhaps is the nation with whom we share many similarities. Both are founding members of ASEAN (whose headquarters is in Jakarta), both are archipelagoes with thousands of islands and both have hundreds of local dialects or languages. As President Marcos noted, the two nations are close in terms of geography as well as in culture andFormalethnicity.diplomatic relations between Indonesia and the Philippines began in 1949, but the relationship goes “much further than that because we consider Indonesians not only a neighbor, not only a friend, but kin,” the President stressed. Indonesians are sometimes mistaken for Filipinos and vice versa because we look so much alike and, as a matter of fact, there are hundreds of words in the Bahasa Indonesia language that sound almost the same as Tagalog.Agreements on defense and security were also signed during the visit to Indonesia, with both governments renewing the commitment to stronger bilateral cooperation on trade, infrastructure, as well as border and maritime security, among

As in much of the world outside the British Commonwealth, there has been a high interest among Filipinos in developments in the United Kingdom following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Aside from the global popularity and pervasiveness of British culture, including the availability of numerous materials on multimedia about the British royal family, there are strong people-to-people bonds between the Philippines and the UK.

THERE is no doubt that presidential trips are extremely important in this ever-changing global world. In the recent history of the Philippines, FVR had the most number of presidential foreign trips. One can argue that his foreign trips were significantly important and, I must admit, having joined several of them, that they yielded fairly good results.

But it was a nice wedding, otherwise.Ikeptcounting all the guests and the drinks to make sure we were within budget. Mercifully we had enough left for taxi fare and a small family reception at home.We had no honeymoon. I was back at work next business day.

At any rate, we made up for the scrimping on our 50th anniversary. We pulled out all the stops, including a designer gown for Gigi and a new tuxedo for me. The kids also hired a limousine.

Heart Evangelista resolves to buy things that would last for a lifetime

The manuscript for the book had gone out for submission right before the pandemic hit in March 2020, and it went into auction at the height of the pandemic when everything began closing down.

MEET Sophia N. Lee, a Filipino author of books for kids and youngSimonadults. &Schuster (under its imprint Atheneum), one of the Big 5 publishers in the United States, released last week Lee’s latest book  Holding On. It is the first Filipino picture book to be published by a major American publishing firm.

Meanwhile, Heart, in a previous vlog post in early September, admitted that she is going through some personal stuff in her life lately.

Born in Manila, Isabel “Pepper” Roxas is now based in New York as well. She has made a name as an illustrator of children’s books—she already did the art for nine titles published in the United States, including Filipino American Erin Entrada Kelly’s Newborn Medal-winning “Hello Universe” (soon to be a Netflix series).Submitting the manuscript was just the first hurdle. Lee quickly realized that there was just so much uncertainty going around when the book was acquired.

That makes the book’s publication a bit bittersweet for her.“My Mama Jessie passed away during that season – not due to COVID, but due to complications from her pre-existing conditions,” she recalled. “The manuscript actually sold on the day that she died. I’d like to think that that was her way of still looking out for me.”Mama Jessie immigrated to New York in the early 90s, a few years after her husband had passed. Leewas navigating the ways their relationship had changed from when she spent summers with her as a little girl to when she was older and she had already been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. She remembered the songs her Lola used to sing for her, it didn’t matter if it was from Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Basil Valdez, or Nora Aunor. “There is always singing in Lola’s house,” Lee writes in the book, reminiscing the summer days she spent visiting her Lola’s house in

It was founded as a holiday by President Jimmy Carter and was first celebrated in 1979 after obtaining great public support. The holiday has been celebrated annually to show the bond between grandparents and their grandchildren, and this is the heart of Lee’s book celebrating the love between Lola and her apo (grandchild).

I love what that signifies about us: that we’re always able to find the melody amidst the chaos of our days,” Lee said, recalling why music became the unifying theme for her book.

“I had been a sickly child, and in the summer, I would spend a few weeks to a month at my Lola Josefina’s house (we called her Mama Jessie) so I could be nursed back to health, in a sense,” she revealed. Thesickly kid wanted to be many things growing up: doctor, teacher, ballerina, ninja, spy, wizard, journalist, and lawyer. It is not the first time that Star Magic has been targeted by scammers who prey on unsuspecting people, demanding money for auditions. Writing the story became Lee’s way of holding on to the person that she knew her grandmother to be, especially after she lost herself to Alzheimer’s. She wrote the manuscript while she was in graduate school living with her grandmother Mama Jessie in New York.

Multiple questions bothered her mind. Would publishing carry on despite the pandemic? Would the world look the same once the book is released? Would she live through the pandemic to see this day

Star Magic workshops will not conduct any kind of audition that offers monetary compensation. We will not also ask for payment in joining auditions,” it said in an Instagram post on Monday, September 12.

“It feels good to be empowered and know that you can do things on your own no matter how hard certain situations in your company, in your workplace, or the people around you, or what weighs you down. At the end of the day, it’s really your inner strength and you being independent about what you want to do in life, and not rely on anyone that matters. That's where I'm at,” Heart stated.

“I feel like, you know, I love having luxury items for… just because I know it’s going to last me a lifetime or over a lifetime, whoever’s gonna get it afterwards,” she added.

Star Magic artist John Arcilla, who was surprised by the scam being perpetrated, posted a reply to the original post, asking people to be careful about being scammed by unscrupulous people.“Huh...? Grabe naman. Kaya nila yun? Whew. Ingat po sa mga scam. God bless everyone!,” Arcilla said in his reply post.

Heart also revealed a factor that’s important to her now, stating, “I’m also about sustainability lately. So that’s why I wanna buy stuff that I know I can use for a really long time. And eventually, if it doesn’t sing to me anymore, somebody else can use them. So, yeah, that’s what I’ve been you know, going through and learning, unlearning stuff as Furtherwell.”,Heart talked about her “excessive closet” and what it meant to her in the past.

“A book is such a quiet thing, starting out as a whisper in your mind until you convince yourself to commit the words to paper,” she explained. “But it’s also an act of faith – you write the story unsure if it’s going to sell or be appreciated by anyone other than yourself, and you keep committing to it until you see it through to the end of the publishing process.”  Lee, who is also the author of Soaring Saturdays; What Things Mean  (2014 Scholastic Asian Book Award grand prize winner); and Holding On is already looking forward to what’s next.

Scammers come in many forms, shapes and sizes.

Any rift between the power couple has been denied by people close to them, including Heart’s mom, Cecile Ongpauco, who recently said that she doesn’t know of any issue that has cropped between her daughter and son-in-law, and by GMA Network, where Heart is one of its major stars, which denied rumors that they were going to issue a statement with regard to the couple’s status.

“I feel really privileged knowing that  Holding On is helping pave the way for more Filipino stories. I hope that it signals to readers everywhere that our stories matter too, that we are capable of being the heroes in our stories,” Lee told the Asian Journal. “I love that I’m able to show the world all that I love about the Philippines and our culture.”

Auctions happen when there is interest from multiple publishing houses. This means that the interested houses submitted competing offers and part of what was offered to Lee was the opportunity to have a say in who her illustrator would be.

As a Filipino living abroad, there was a constant yearning for home and she wanted to channel that.“Then it all clicked for me –how I was using Filipino music to hold on too,” she recalled. “It reminded me of every time I saw someone belting it out on karaoke back home – be it at a family reunion or a barkada night out, or outside of a grocery store in the mall, or even at one of those sidestreet karinderias.”

Heart also said that she will give updates on the “unfiltered version of my life, which I love.”

Filipinos, wherever they are, use music as a way to get by.

The picture book is about a young girl who visits her Lola in the Philippines every summer. Set in the Philippines, this story focuses on the relationship between a young Filipino girl and her Lola (the Filipino word for grandma). Asthestory progresses, Lola’s memory starts to fade. However, the story does not dwell in sadness, instead, the young girl uses music and community to help her Lola hold onto joy and love. It is illustrated by New Yorkbased Filipino illustrator Isabel Roxas.

She said: “We’re gonna change things up a bit. Not everything is dandy and beautiful. At the end of the day, I feel like it’s so important to always be authentic and really stay true to yourself whether people agree with you or not.”

Builders put buyers on waiting lists and it was not uncommon for prices to be raised regularly. At times, lotteries were even put in place to determine who would be able to purchase a property.According to Realtors and industry experts, the price drop is actually good for the Las Vegas

It is a different story though when it comes to commercial properties in Las Vegas, particularly along theItStrip.isvery hard to find a piece of land that is not going to sell for a good amount. Everyone wants a piece of the pie, so to speak. Casino/ resort groups are continually improving their operations by buying when it suits them and offloading or closing properties when they become liabilities, and billionaires and venture capitalists want to stake their claim in Las Vegas before it becomes too expensive to enter the market.

From a median sales price high of $482,000 in May 2022, the median price of homes dropped to $450,000 in August 2022, which is a $15,000 drop from the previous month (July 2022), according to a report in the Las Vegas ReviewJournal. Despite the $32,000 drop from its highest point, home prices are still up substantially from about a year ago, with median home prices at the $375,000 range in August of 2021.

available in the market, especially when there’s a lull. Aside from the ability to look over many properties that may suit your needs, you don’t need to cater to all of the seller’s demands, unlike before.

Higher borrowing costs have contributed to the lull from home buyers as the average rates for a 30-year home loan have risen to 5.22% in August of 2022 (slightly

This has, in turn, allowed more inventory to flow into the market as house hunters have pulled back on home purchases, unlike in 2020 and 2021 when sellers were having multiple buyers having a bidding war on their properties.

The Danyelle Luckey Act – named for U.S. Navy Sailor Danyelle Luckey, who died of sepsis aboard the USS Ronald Reagan in 2016 after the ship’s medical staff failed to diagnose and treat her appropriately – expands the rights of servicemembers and their families to file medical malpractice claims stemming from botched care and medical negligence onboard vessels large enough to have substantial medical capabilities, such as aircraft carriers and amphibious ships.

As of last Tuesday, September 13, 2022, there were 87,002 cases of COVID-19 in the United States, with 569 deaths, and 32,291 in the hospital. Only 68 percent of the people are fully vaccinated, so there are still more than 100 million unvaccinated. This large number of potentially virus spreaders will keep COVID-19 with us much longer, if not permanently. It is, sadly, most unfortunate.

SAN FRANCISCO – In celebration of National Citizenship Month in September, San Francisco is encouraging eligible green card holders to take advantage of the free resources available to apply for citizenship at this critical time. California has the highest number of newly naturalized citizens in the country, and many of these new citizens will be voting in the midterm elections this November.

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. declared an extension of the state of calamity which former president Rodrigo Duterte initially proclaimed two years ago (in March 2020), in view of the rising cases of COVID-19 infections in the country. Press Trixie CruzAngeles said the state of calamity, which expired on Monday, September 12 was extended by about three months, “primarily to allow purchases and provide hazard allowances for healthcare workers.ThePhilippines “is among the Southeast Asian nations that has imposed the longest lockdowns around the world, causing economic recession in decades and deepened poverty, hunger, and unemployment.” In spite of the infection rate, the authorities seem to be in a hurry to end, instead of maintaining, the mitigating strategies (masking, distancing) against COVID-19 viruses, while extending the state of calamity. Lowering the guards now might spell spikes and waves of infections.

Earlier research revealed that poor diet was associated with 20 percent (1 in 5) deaths worldwide, which could be prevented by a healthier diet. On the same issue, Italian scientists noted that people with the lowest quality diet and consuming the highest amount of ultra-processed food have an increased risk of both all-cause cardiovascular deaths.

“Six years ago in October, our hearts were ripped out and torn apart when our daughter Danyelle Ashely Luckey died from military medical malpractice on board the USS Ronald Reagan. Adding to our heartache, we were not allowed to pursue a claim for this maltreatment because ‘technically’ a medical treatment facility on the naval vessel is not legally considered a military medical treatment facility. That is wrong, and this legislation corrects that wrong and allows victims and their families to pursue a claim against the Navy when they have been mistreated on board a ship, defining a navy ship's medical facility as a military medical treatment facility for purposes of pursuing a claim,” the Luckey family said. “It is bad enough that we each day suffer the pain of her loss, and our beautiful daughter will never have the full life she deserved. We ask that this legislation be adopted in her memory so that other service members won't suffer the same wrong that she and we have suffered.”Foracopy of the bill text, go luckey-act-speier-337-xml-.pdf.06477AB13AD3B3A47D8BD47.9094-38768f6cf767/95E85FEC3files/3/5/3568d6c3-ea0a-488e-https://speier.house.gov/_cache/to
