US blacklists three IS recruiters including Filipino All three had connections to Philippine terror group A 28-year-old Philippine national was among the three men from Southeast Asia to be added to the U.S. Treasury’s sanctions blacklist on Friday, August 24, for involvement with the Islamic State (IS) terror group. The U.S. Treasury Department imposed the sanctions on Philippine national Mohammad Reza Lahaman Kiram, Indonesian national Mohammed Karim Yusop Faiz, and Malaysian national Mohamad Rafi Udin, freezing their assets and denying them access to the U.S. financial system. The three were said to be recruiters for the Islamic militant group and appeared in a beheading video for ISIS. “Treasury is targeting ISIS recruiters who have engaged in a beheading video and other brutal acts as part of a propaganda campaign to attract radicals to join militant terrorist groups in Southeast Asia,” U.S.

Duterte: ‘PH better off with dictator like Marcos if drugs, corruption persist’ MANILA – The Philippines is better off with a dictator like the late president Ferdinand Marcos if illegal drugs and corruption persist, President Duterte said Thursday, August 30. Duterte, who previously described Marcos as “one of the brightest Filipinos,” said illicit drugs and corruption would continue to plague the Philip-
ingan ng mga Bayani despite protests from human rights groups. Duterte insisted that the late strongman deserves to be interred in the heroes’ cemetery as a former president and commanderin-chief. After praising Marcos, Duterte belittled the capabilities of Vice Presi-

A BETTER and more sustainable Boracay is set to welcome back visitors on October 26 and is expected to usher in newer and bigger markets awaiting the island’s full recovery. Undersecretary for Tourism Development Benito Bengzon Jr. reiterated that the Department of Tourism (DOT) is well on track with its 7.4 million target as the island’s closure also became an opportunity to introduce and boost travel-
lers’ awareness of other tourism destinations in the country, which was key to retaining the country’s positive month-on-month performance on tourism arrivals. “The fact that we have kept ourselves afloat is a very strong reflection of how resilient the industry is, how quick we are to make adjustments with our marketing and promotions and I think, also a very strong communication of Undersecretary for Tourism Development

TO protect minors from sexual exploitation and abuse, Senator Leila de Lima has filed Senate Bill No. 1949 which aims to peg the age of sexual consent from the current 12 years to 18 years. “In increasing the age of consent to 18 years old, the State is sending a message – loud and clear – the youth will be protected by all means and at all costs,” de Lima said in a statement on Thursday, August 30. “It is vital to delineate childhood from adulthood, and to take a second look at the choices we allow our children, despite the scarcity of their experience and wisdom to
independently take,” she added. According to de Lima, who currently works from her detention cell due to drugrelated charges, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is alarmed with the Philippines’ age of sexual consent as it is one of the lowest worldwide, and is the lowest in the region. In a June 2015 report entitled “Analysis of Domestic Laws related to Violence against Children”, UNICEF advised lawmakers to raise the age of sexual consent to 16 years old. “Consider raising the age of consent to 16 years for sexual activity occurring between

LEADERS of the House minority bloc on Wednesday, August 29, called on Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol, National Food Authority (NFA) Administrator Jason Aquino and officials of the NFA Council to resign, citing their failure to address the rice shortage that has jacked up retail prices. House Minority Leader Danilo Suarez and his deputies Alfredo Garbin of Ako Bicol party-list and Jose Atienza of Buhay party-list, made the call a day after Piñol announced that the country’s rice inventory stood at 1,320,927 metric tons (MT) or good for only 40 days, less than half of the required 90-day national buffer stock. Piñol had drawn criticism after rice imported from Thailand was found to have been infested with weevils (bukbok), and he vowed to eat Thai rice after fumigation. The Cabinet official again drew flak for proposing to legalize smuggling in the Zamboanga peninsula, where the price of rice has reached as high as P70 per kilo. “That (statements made by Piñol) is a conduct unbecoming of a Cabinet official. Kakain siya ng bukbok? E pakainin ko kaya siya ng bukbok araw-araw, tignan natin anong maramdaman niya (If I make him eat infested rice every day, how would he feel?),” Suarez said in a news conference. Atienza said the Department of

Agriculture was not doing anything about the rice shortage, while the NFA and the policymaking NFA Council have been blaming each other over the delayed delivery of rice imports. “Clearly, we can’t depend on these people. They have given up. They should resign and give other people a chance to solve the problem,” he added. Garbin said Piñol was peddling stupidity by calling for legaliza-
