STUDENTS in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) would now have to take an ethnic studies course as a graduation requirement, according to a new resolution passed on Tuesday, Aug. 25. The resolution is an expansion of existing ethnic studies curriculum, and it ensures that teaching materials at all grade levels include texts written by authors of color, particularly Black writers, an historic blindspot to curricula that predominantly favored white writers. According to the LAUSD Board of Education, these ethnic studies curricula are expected to be implemented by the 2023-2024 academic year. u PAGE A4
