DATELINE Cognitive rehab may help older adults clear COVID-related brain fog FROM THE AJPRESS NEWS TEAM ACROSS AMERICA

EIGHT months after falling ill with COVID-19, the 73-year-old woman couldn’t remember what her husband had told her a few hours before. She would forget to remove laundry from the dryer at the end of the cycle. She would turn on the tap at a sink and walk away. Before COVID, the woman had been doing bookkeeping for a local business. Now, she couldn’t add single-digit numbers in her head. Was it the earliest stage of dementia, unmasked by COVID? No. When a therapist assessed the woman’s cognition, her scores were normal. What was going on? Like many people who’ve contracted COVID, this woman was having difficulty sustaining attention, organizing activities, and multitasking. She complained of brain fog. She didn’t feel like herself. But this patient was lucky. PRESIDENT Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. expressed hope that the Philippines' relationship with the United States would continue to "evolve in the face of all the changes that have been happening worldwide." Marcos issued the statement during a courtesy call by Secretary of State Antony Blinken to the President in Malacañang where they discussed the 70-year-old Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT), amid the

"shared challenges." The MDT, signed between the two nations in 1951, calls for both to come to each other's defense in case of an armed attack. "The Mutual Defense Treaty is in constant evolution, I'd like to think of it," Marcos told Blinken. The Philippines is caught between the rising conflict between the U.S. and China after Speaker Nancy Pelosi of the U.S. House of Representatives reportedly used the country's international airport to transit to Taiwan earlier this week.

Marcos, however, said that Pelosi's visit to Asia, which included Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan, did not raise the intensity of the conflict, but proved how it had always been present in the region. On Friday, August 5, China announced sanctions against Pelosi for allegedly "interfering in China's internal affairs and seriously undermining China's sovereignty and territorial integrity." This developed after Pelosi claimed that the U.S. will "not allow" China to isolate Taiwan.  PAGE 2

POPE Francis has sent his condolences to Filipinos for the death of former President Fidel Ramos. In a telegram addressed to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, the pope extended to Filipinos his “heartfelt condolences and the assurance of my prayers”. “Mindful of the late President’s years of service to the nation and his efforts in fostering the values of democracy, peace and rule of law, I commend his soul to the mercy of Almighty God,” he wrote. “Upon President Ramos’ family and all who mourn his passing, I invoke the divine blessings of consolation and peace,” the pope added. Ramos, the country’s 12th president, died on July 31 at age 94. He was laid to rest at the National Heroes’ Cemetery in Metro Manila on August 9. Under his term, the nation was dubbed as the “tiger cub economy in Asia” with his economic reforms. Prior to his election as president, he served as chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines from 1986 to 1988 and Secretary of National Defense from 1988 to 1991. Sara Duterte denies hand in Walden Bello cyber libel case MANILA — Vice President Sara Duterte denied on Tuesday, August 9 that she is behind the cyber libel charges faced by longtime activist and her former opponent for the vice-presidency, Walden Bello, which was filed by a former Davao City official now working for the Office of the Vice President. “I have never filed a libel case in my life. Criticisms do not deserve even a backward glance because the accomplishments of Davao City under my leadership are already set in stone,” Duterte said in a statement. “Mr. Bello should focus on salvaging what remains of his dignity and self-respect. I am asking him to stop obsessing over me

— and stop blaming me for his fall from grace,” she added. But Bello, arrested Monday in Quezon City on two counts of cyber libel filed by former Davao information officer Jefry Tupas, maintained that Duterte is the "moving force" behind the charges and accused the vice president's camp of having "weaponized the law." "The cyberlibel charge against me was a vindictive response to questions I raised about Vice President Duterte's performance as mayor of Davao that she Former President Fidel V.
