Palace points to improved testing capacity as PH emerges as SE Asia’s COVID-19 hotspot by RITCHEL

MENDIOLA AJPress

AS the Philippines this week became the country in Southeast Asia with the most coronavirus cases, the government said the increased number is due to its ramped up testing capacity. On Thursday, August 6, the country surpassed

Indonesia’s 118,753 cases after the Department of Health recorded 3,561 additional COVID-19 cases, bringing the national count to 119,460. According to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, the country logged more infections than Indonesia because of more tests being conducted. He said that reports claiming the Philippines is now the

COVID-19 hotspot in Southeast Asia were “false” and “inconclusive.” “Dahil mas maigting ang ating pagte-test, hindi po totoo na mas maraming kaso tayo kaysa sa Indonesia (Because we have intensified our testing capacity, it’s not true that we have more cases than Indonesia),” he u PAGE A2

THE United States Census Bureau will be ending all of its 2020 counting efforts — including door-knocking, and online, mail, and phone responses — on September 30, a full month earlier than it had previously planned. The sudden deadline change, according to bureau director Steven Dillingham, was to “accelerate the completion of data collection and apportionment counts by our statutory deadline of December 31, 2020, as required by law and directed by the Secretary of Commerce.” Aside from finding population changes and gathering information of who makes up the U.S., data derived from the decennial census is critical in addressing the country’s needs, such as determining political representation and the allocation of federal funds for communities and programs related to education, hospitals, transportation, and veteran assistance among others. With the deadline cut short, census advocates say the bureau will have a much harder time trying to reach people, including those from low-income communities, u PAGE A2

MENDIOLA AJPress

THE United States’ policy shift on maritime disputes in the South China Sea was recently discussed by the top diplomats of Manila and Washington during a phone call. Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also talked about the “U.S. support for Southeast Asian coastal states upholding their sovereign rights and interests consistent with international law, and opportunities for further U.S.-Philippine maritime cooperation,” according to the

U.S. Department of State. “The two secretaries also discussed the strong economic, security, and people-topeople ties that bind our two countries,” it added on a press readout released Friday, August 7. Pompeo, for his part, said the telephone conversation with Locsin was good as they got to discuss their shared interests in the South China Sea. “The U.S.-Philippine Alliance is vital to a free and open Indo-Pacific,” he added. Earlier, Pompeo noted that “Beijing’s claims to offshore resources across most of In this February 28, 2019 photo, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo participated in a joint press

AFTER nearly five months, the U.S. State Department lifted its blanket global Level 4 Health Advisory that advised U.S. citizens to avoid all international travel due to the impact of the COVID19 pandemic, and returned to issuing its warnings to individual countries. “With health and safety conditions improving in some countries and potentially deteriorating in others, the Department is returning to our previous system of country-specific levels of travel

advice (with Levels from 1-4 depending on country-specific conditions), in order to give travelers detailed and actionable information about the current status in each country,” the department said in a news release on Thursday, August 6. “We are closely monitoring health and safety conditions across the globe, working in partnership with the CDC and other agencies. As always, we will regularly update our destinationspecific advice to U.S. travelers as conditions evolve,” it added. The Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory — the strictest travel ad-

visory warning Americans against international travel — was put in place on March 19 as the coronavirus pandemic began to impact the U.S. Citizens abroad — including in the Philippines — were encouraged to either return to the U.S. or stay abroad indefinitely. As of Friday, about 30 countries like Argentina, China, Belize, the Bahamas, Saudi Arabia, and Mexico continued to have their own Level 4 advisory. The Philippines was issued a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” advisory as of Thursday, along with u PAGE A3
