Meet the Filipina American ensuring Californians fill out the 2020 Census AS the United States’ decennial population count is underway in the midst of the pandemic, one Filipina American is tasked with making sure California residents, particularly those that are the hardest-to-count, respond to the 2020 Census. Going into July, the state’s self-response rate now stands at 63.2%, but Ditas Katague, director of the California Complete Count Committee, is continuing to urge communities across the state to submit their questionnaires to increase the percentage and achieve a complete count. To date, California has allocated over $90 million for its census outreach efforts. “With our percentage, we’re still outpacing the nation by a little bit. I like to stay in front of the national average, which is at 61.8%. City of Los Angeles unveils new assistance program for at-risk renters Up to 50,000 households can be helped for two months IN an effort to address the mounting financial insecurity among families during the pandemic, the City of Los Angeles has unveiled a new $103 million rent relief program to help lower income renters stay in their homes, the City of LA Housing and Community Investment Department (HDICLA) announced on Wednesday, July 8. The Emergency Renters Assistance Program was created to offer rent relief for eligible renters in Los Angeles with up to $2,000 in subsidies per household for two months ($1,000 each month that will be paid directly to the landlords). If the landlords accept the funds, they are agreeing to: drop charge interest or late fees that the tenant owed, not evict the tenant for six months after whenever the city emergency order expires and not enact rent increases for a year after the order expires. ABS-CBN will remain off-air as a Philippine House of Representatives panel on Friday, July 10, rejected the bills seeking to grant the broadcasting giant a new 25year franchise. Voting 70 to 11, the House Committee on Legislative Franchises adopted the recommendation of its technical working group to deny the network a new franchise. Two congressmen inhibited while one abstained. “The (group) determined that the likely consensus among members of this committee is to disapprove the application of ABS-CBN for another franchise,” Deputy Speaker Pablo John Garcia said in his reading of the report. THE Vatican on Wednesday, July 8, announced that Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, is among the new members of the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue. According to the Vatican, the Pontifical Council is the central office of the Church for the promotion of interreligious dialogue in accordance with the spirit of the Second Vatican Council, in
particular the declaration Nostra aetate. “It is responsible for promoting mutual understanding, respect, and collaboration between Catholics and followers of other religious traditions; encouraging the study of religions; and promoting the formation of persons dedicated to dialogue,” it added.
