‘No better ally for Indo-Pacific than US’ THE new commander of the U.S. forces said on Wednesday, May 30, that Indo-Pacific countries will not find a better ally than the United States in the pursuit of preserving peace and stability. “To our allies here in the Indo-Pacific, you will have no better ally. To our partners, I look forward to advancing our partnership in a way that serves our mutual interests,” Admiral Phil Davidson said during the command turnover ceremonies at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. According to Davidson, the Indo-Pacific has been largely peaceful for more than 70 years. “In most ways, this was made possible by two things: the commitment of free nations to the free and open international order… and the credibility of the combat power within U.S. Pacific Command,” he said. OUSTED chief justice Maria Lourdes Sereno on Wednesday, May 30, filed her motion for reconsideration to the Supreme Court (SC), urging her colleagues there to invalidate their decision of ousting her as the chief justice. The SC voted 8-6 in finding Sereno “guilty of unlawfully holding and exercising the Office of the Chief Justice” on May 11. According to Sereno, the decision was replete with “legal and factual errors.” In her 205-page motion filed minutes before the deadline, Sereno said the ruling — which granted the quo warranto petition brought against her by Solicitor General Jose Calida — “illustrates vividly the dire and far-reaching consequences of a denial of due process.” She asked the SC to reconsider its ruling that abruptly ended her unprecedented 18year term. “This is essentially a plea to the honorable

Palace: Boracay for all Filipinos, not just rich resort owners by RITCHEL
MENDIOLA AJPress
BORACAY is intended for all Filipinos, not just the wealthy resort owners, Malacañang assured the public on Thursday, May 31. According to Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque, President Rodrigo Duterte wants to give back the island to the “common individuals” especially farmers who could till the land. He also wants Filipinos to enjoy all that the world-famous island has to offer. “The president, for the third time, reiterated that it should be for the common individual. Boracay is for all Filipinos and
ordinary citizens, and not the rich resort owners,” Roque said during the Palace press briefing. He added, “If there are beneficiaries, they will be given land. The problem is we still don’t know the beneficiaries.” Boracay is temporarily on shutdown for six months to allow the authorities to rehabilitate the island — which had become a “cesspool,” according to Duterte. Roque also said no one can claim ownership over the 30-meter shoreline easement. “It’s for the public enjoyment so that everyone can enjoy the beach . . . It’s called Bass player Francis Anthony Lapidario; drummer Percy Paa; former Tacloban City mayor Alfred Sison the public easement,” Roque said.
