Senate vote puts California’s electric vehicle plan in jeopardy
The state vows to fight back in court
cALiforNiA’s ambitious plan to ban the sale of new gas-powered cars by 2035 is now under threat after the U.s senate voted to strip the state of its authority to set its own vehicle emission rules. the move, if signed into law by the president, would effectively cancel california’s electric vehicle (eV) mandate — and the state is preparing for a court battle. for decades, california has had special permission under the federal clean Air Act to set stricter emissions standards than the rest of the country. this policy not only shaped california’s fight against air pollution but also helped push the auto industry toward cleaner cars. over a dozen states have adopted california’s standards as their own.
Why the Senate voted to block it supporters of the senate measure argue that california’s eV rule would force electric cars on people who may not be ready or

Race for Senate presidency heats up: Marcos, Sotto, others floated as potential contenders
by AJPress
mANiLA — As the 20th Philippine congress prepares to resume its second regular session in July, political murmurs are growing over a potential shake-up in senate leadership—a post often called “two heartbeats away from the presidency” due to its place in the constitutional line of succession. currently held by senator francis “chiz” escudero, the senate presidency is a pivotal role in Philippine governance. the position not only ranks third in line to the highest of-
fice, but also exerts significant influence over legislative priorities, committee control, and executive-legislative negotiations.
While no formal leadership challenge has emerged, several names are being floated within political circles as potential successors or future contenders—signaling that positioning may already be underway.
Among them is senator imee marcos, who confirmed on may 23 that fellow lawmakers have approached her to consider the role. some senators have approached me with

is proceeding with a significant cabinet overhaul following his administration’s underwhelming performance in the may 12 midterm elections. New appointments have been confirmed across several agencies, while other positions remain under review. the reshuffle, initially described by malacañang as a “bold reset,” began earlier this month with a call for courtesy resignations from all cabinet secretaries. What began as a symbolic gesture is now reshaping the inner circle of the marcos administration—replacing key figures while reaffirming the roles of others with consistent performance records in economic management and national security. WhiLe many political alliances in the Philippines have shifted with the winds of power, one pairing has endured with surprising consistency: imee marcos and the Dutertes. their relationship — defined by mutual support, shared political interests, and public displays of solidarity — has placed the senator in the role of one of Duterte’s most visible and vocal defenders, even on the international stage. that loyalty was on full display in may, when marcos traveled

in accordance with international law, including UNcLos.” the Philippines has repeatedly voiced concern over china’s expansive territorial claims in the south china sea, and marcos’ remarks were seen as part of a broader push to rally AseAN toward collective action. his speech came amid continued maritime confrontations near Philippine waters and follows months of diplomatic friction between manila and Beijing. the summit also addressed external economic shocks, with AseAN member states expressing concern over rising tariffs from the United states that have affected key exports. the Philippines joined malaysia and indonesia in advocating for a calibrated regional trade response and renewed dialogue with Washington.
AseAN’s membership expansion was another topic of consensus. marcos reaffirmed the Philippines’ support for timor-Leste’s full accession, praising its progress toward meeting the bloc’s integration criteria. he also welcomed discussions about expanding AseAN’s influence deeper into the Pacific, referencing ongoing engagement with Papua New Guinea.
“Let us maintain AseAN’s unity and centrality amidst the challenges we face,” marcos said. “our peoples expect nothing less.” the Philippines last held the AseAN chairmanship in 2017. According to government officials, the 2026 term will place more emphasis on long-term strategic frameworks rather than reactive diplomacy. Analysts view the shift as a chance for manila to reposition itself not just as a participant, but as a convener and regional stabilizer.
As the summit concluded in Kuala Lumpur, the Philippines returned not only with a stronger diplomatic profile, but also with an emerging role in helping steer the future of AseAN. With its chairmanship just a year away, manila faces the task of translating strategic ambitions into actionable regional consensus — on trade, climate, maritime law, and digital integration.
Whether the Philippines can convert this momentum into lasting regional influence will depend not only on its domestic readiness, but on its ability to navigate the competing interests that increasingly define the indoPacific. n

rising tensions in the West Philippine sea. still, romualdez acknowledged that the government is currently prioritizing more affordable, land-based defense systems aligned with the country’s comprehensive Archipelagic Defense concept. “We have to be realistic with our limited resources and current threats,” he added.
Looking to long-term loans to make the deal feasible, the Philippines is considering a longterm loan arrangement with the U.s. government. this financing model would mirror previous deals, such as the acquisition of Black hawk helicopters through U.s.-backed loans.
romualdez confirmed that discussions are ongoing with Lockheed martin, the
manufacturer of the f-16s, and U.s. agencies to find terms that are viable for the Philippines.
“We’re not closing the door on this, but we need a structure that does not place too heavy a burden on our finances.”
Trade policy complications romualdez also cited ongoing U.s. trade restrictions as a potential obstacle to funding. he noted that tariffs affecting Philippine exports could limit the country’s fiscal space to commit to such a high-cost purchase.
“With a trade surplus of about $4.8 billion and a potential jet deal costing $5.8 billion, easing those trade constraints could help offset the cost,” he explained, urging better bilateral trade terms to support defense cooperation. Not aimed at any nation the ambassador emphasized
that the f-16 acquisition is not directed at any specific country. this procurement is for our national defense and regional security partnerships,” he said. it should not be interpreted as a provocation.”
Between policy and procurement
While the Philippine government remains interested in acquiring f-16 jets as part of its long-term defense vision, officials say the current focus remains on bolstering more immediate defense assets that are cost-effective and missioncritical.
With talks ongoing and trade dynamics in play, any final decision on the fighter jet purchase will depend on how well financing plans can be aligned with national priorities. n

Midterm elections as a political barometer the 2025 midterm elections marked a significant political recalibration. marcos’s coalition, Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas, secured only six of twelve senate seats—its weakest performance since 2007. meanwhile, the Duterten alliance, backed by Vice President sara Duterte and former President rodrigo Duterte, gained four seats, while liberal opposition figures Bam Aquino and Kiko Pangilinan also returned to the senate. the outcome has been widely viewed as a referendum on the m arcos administration’s performance at midterm. t he cabinet reshuffle reflects both a tactical correction and strategic preparation for the 2028 national elections.

Senate vote puts California’s electric vehicle...
them. they say
rule is
for automakers and avoids confusion for consumers. But critics call the vote an attack on states’ rights and a dangerous step backward for the environment. they note that california’s plan doesn’t ban gas cars outright—it simply phases in zero-emission options, giving the industry years to adapt.
California pushes back Governor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General rob Bonta have both vowed to sue. they argue the vote is illegal and that california has every right to act on its air quality problems, which are among the worst in the country.
california isn’t backing down,” said Newsom. “We know what’s at stake—for our air, our climate, and our kids’ future.” the state is also part of a new 11-state coalition that supports cleaner cars and says states should be able to lead when federal action falls short. Is this legal? experts are divided. the senate used a law called the congressional review Act (crA) to try to reverse the ePA’s approval of california’s emissions plan.
But some say that ePA waivers like this one weren’t meant to be reversed by the crA—something courts may have to decide.
Legal or not, this is the first time congress has tried to cancel
a state’s clean air waiver using this method.
What this means for you for drivers in california and other states that follow its lead, this fight could impact the kinds of cars available in the future — especially electric options. if the senate vote holds, automakers may no longer be required to boost electric vehicle sales in those states. if california wins in court, the 2035 target to stop selling new gas-only cars could still move forward. for now, california says the road to cleaner transportation isn’t over.
“this is just the beginning of the next chapter,” said Bonta. “And we’re ready.” n
Ex-Congressman Teves in NBI custody over...
santiago said the former lawmaker is being held in an 8-squaremeter cell equipped with closedcircuit television cameras, signal jammers, and 24/7 surveillance.
“Building 14 is strictly under the NBi it is isolated from the rest of Bilibid’s general population and built for security and transparency,” santiago said.
teves’ return marks the end of a nearly two-year period abroad, during which he claimed to face grave threats to his life and family. he left the country in early 2023, shortly before he was linked to the killing of Governor Degamo.
The assassination of Roel Degamo on march 4, 2023, Governor roel Degamo was shot and killed at his residence in Pamplona, Negros oriental, during a weekend aid distribution event under the 4Ps program. Gunmen in militarystyle uniforms opened fire, killing Degamo and nine others, and injuring several residents.
Degamo, a three-term governor known for his grassroots programs, had recently reclaimed the position following a supreme court ruling that invalidated his rival’s proclamation. his assassination shocked the nation and drew widespread condemnation.
multiple suspects were arrested in the days that followed, several of whom alleged that teves orchestrated the attack—an accusation he denies and which remains unproven in court. the Department of Justice (DoJ) subsequently filed multiple counts of murder, frustrated murder, and attempted murder against
him. in August 2023, the Antiterrorism council designated teves a terrorist, citing his alleged leadership role in what they classified as an act of terrorism. it was a rare move involving a former legislator. An interpol red Notice was later issued, prompting international coordination that led to his arrest in Dili, timor-Leste, on may 27, 2025.
Teves: “I am innocent” Despite mounting legal pressure, teves has consistently denied any involvement in Degamo’s killing. in various public statements and interviews, he claimed he was undergoing stem cell treatment in the United states at the time of the incident—a claim that has not been independently verified.
“there was no logic in it,” teves said, asserting that his brother, Pryde henry teves—who briefly held the governorship before Degamo’s reinstatement—could not have reclaimed the position if Degamo had died, since the vice governor would be the legal successor. citing a “very grave threat” to his life, teves refused to return to the Philippines after the charges were filed and instead sought political asylum in timor-Leste, claiming political persecution. his asylum bid was denied, and he was deported after exhausting his appeals.
According to earlier statements by his lawyer, ferdinand topacio, “our client welcomes the chance to finally clear his name.” his legal team has also raised concerns about detention conditions and stressed the need for a fair,
impartial trial.
From Congress to custody teves served as congressman of Negros oriental’s 3rd District from 2016 to 2023, winning three consecutive terms. he also held the post of Deputy speaker from 2020 to 2022.
on August 16, 2023, he became the first sitting lawmaker in post-eDsA Philippine history to be expelled from the house of representatives. the house cited disorderly behavior, refusal to comply with official summons, and damaging conduct on social media as grounds for his removal.
his congressional seat remained vacant until the may 2025 midterm elections, when Janice Degamo, widow of the slain governor, was elected to represent the district.
Awaiting arraignment teves is expected to undergo arraignment in the coming days.
Justice secretary Jesus crispin remulla said the case will be pursued with “full respect for due process” but emphasized the need for justice and closure.
this is about more than one individual,” remulla said. “this is about restoring faith in our institutions and ensuring that justice is served regardless of influence or position.”
President ferdinand marcos Jr., who had earlier urged teves to return, welcomed the development, saying, it is now time for Arnie teves to face justice.”
As of press time, no court has rendered a verdict in the case. Arnolfo teves Jr. remains presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. n

seAttLe — several filipino green card holders have been detained at U. s . airports— most notably at seattle-tacoma i nternational Airport—due to prior convictions, some dating back decades. these cases have drawn concern from immigration attorneys and community advocates, who warn that lawful permanent residents are being placed in removal proceedings over offenses long resolved in court.
Among them is maximo “max” Londonio, a longtime olympia, Washington resident and father of three, who was detained on may 15, 2025, by U.s customs and Border Protection after returning from a family trip to the Philippines. Londonio had immigrated to the U.s. at age 12 and had built a life in Washington state. his detention was reportedly tied to a 2002 theft conviction for which he had already served his sentence.
“Now he’s being treated like a criminal again for something we thought was behind us,” his wife, crystal Londonio, said during a rally organized by advocacy groups in tacoma. maximo now faces removal proceedings, a process that could lead to deportation. his story mirrors that of Lewelyn Dixon, a 64-year-old University of Washington lab technician who was also detained at sea-tac earlier this year. she had returned
from the Philippines and was taken into custody due to a 2001 embezzlement conviction. Dixon has lived in the U.s. for decades and was reportedly one of at least four filipinos being held at the Northwest Detention center in tacoma as of may.
Under U.s. immigration law, certain offenses—including those classified as crimes involving moral turpitude, such as theft and fraud—can render green card holders inadmissible or deportable, regardless of how long ago the conviction occurred or whether they have since maintained a clean record.
immigration attorney michael J. Gurfinkel, who specializes in cases involving f ilipino immigrants, has advised lawful permanent residents to exercise caution.
“Green card holders think they’re safe because they’ve lived in the U.s. for decades,” he said in a recent video advisory. “But if they have any kind of criminal history, even from 10, 20, or 30 years ago, they can be stopped, detained, and even deported.”
Gurfinkel also warns against signing form i-407—a document that cBP officers may present during detention—which voluntarily surrenders a person’s green card. “it’s not mandatory,” he explained. “ e veryone has the right to a hearing before an immigration judge.”
community organizations such as tanggol m igrante and the Washington immigrant solidarity
Network (WAisN) have rallied in support of detained filipino green card holders, including maximo Londonio. t hese groups have organized protests and issued public statements emphasizing the emotional and economic toll on affected families. Advocates stress that many of those detained have lived in the U.s. for decades, built careers, and raised families—yet are now facing deportation over convictions from long ago.
t he Philippine c onsulate General in s an francisco has confirmed contact with several detained filipinos and is providing assistance through its Assistance to Nationals program. While advocacy groups welcome the support, they are urging both the U.s. and Philippine governments to adopt clearer protections for long-settled immigrants facing legal jeopardy from long-past convictions.
“these aren’t isolated anxieties anymore,” Gurfinkel said. “if there’s a history of conviction—even a minor one—green card holders must speak to an immigration attorney before traveling abroad or filing for naturalization.”
While the known detentions have occurred at sea-tac, legal experts caution that similar cases could arise at any U.s. port of entry under existing laws. they continue to stress the importance of legal preparation and awareness for immigrant communities navigating increasingly unforgiving enforcement policies. n

Pope Leo XIV appoints Cardinal Tagle as titular bishop of Albano, his former post before Papacy
by AJPress
VAticAN citY — Pope Leo XiV has appointed filipino cardinal Luis Antonio tagle as the new titular bishop of Albano, one of the ancient suburbicarian dioceses that encircle rome and are traditionally assigned to the highest-ranking members of the college of cardinals.
in a move that signals renewed confidence in Asian leadership within the roman catholic church, the Vatican announced the appointment on may 24, 2025 — just days after the pope’s formal installation. the Diocese of Albano is especially significant: it was the same titular post held by Pope Leo XiV — hen cardinal robert francis Prevost — before his election to the papacy earlier this month. the reassignment of this title to cardinal tagle underscores the pope’s trust in him and affirms his continued prominence in Vatican leadership. Albano is one of seven suburbicarian sees, each historically held by a cardinalbishop, placing tagle among the top echelons of church governance.
A respected voice in the Global Church tagle, 67, is widely regarded as one of the most influential voices in catholicism today. Born in the
Philippines, he previously served as Archbishop of manila and later headed the congregation for the evangelization of Peoples. he was appointed Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for evangelization, a central post under Pope francis’ curial reform. his theological depth, pastoral approach, and advocacy for the poor have earned him admiration across continents. often described as the “Asian francis” for his humility and reformmindedness, tagle is seen as a key bridge between rome and the rapidly growing churches of the global south. his appointment to a seat previously held by the pope himself not only reinforces their longstanding ecclesial alignment—it also signals a continuation of Vatican priorities under Pope Leo XiV.
Symbolic ceremony: A role in Papal inauguration
Just six days before the Albano announcement, cardinal tagle played a central role in Pope Leo XiV’s inauguration mass on may 18, 2025, at st. Peter’s square. During the liturgy, tagle was given the honor of presenting the ring of the fisherman—a traditional emblem of papal authority—placing it on the new pope’s finger in front of tens of thousands gathered in Vatican
city. the ring, engraved with an image of saint Peter casting his net, is a centuries-old symbol of the pope’s role as the successor to the first Bishop of rome. While ceremonial, the moment reinforced tagle’s stature within the college of cardinals and his close relationship with the new pontiff. A moment of national and global significance cardinal tagle’s rise continues to inspire pride among filipino catholics around the world. With over 85 million catholics, the Philippines is the third-largest catholic country globally — after Brazil and mexico — and its presence in Vatican affairs has never been more pronounced. observers say tagle’s new post positions him to influence both the direction of global evangelization and the church’s evolving relationship with Asia, home to a growing catholic population and complex socioreligious dynamics. As the church continues to globalize its leadership, Pope Leo XiV’s elevation of cardinal tagle to his own former diocese of Albano sends a clear message: the future of catholicism includes — and is being shaped by — the voices of the global south. n
Millions of low-income workers, immigrants...
bill would require all states to enforce new rules mandating that able-bodied adults work at least 80 hours per month or enroll in job training programs to keep their coverage. it also imposes semiannual income eligibility checks, doubling the paperwork for those trying to retain health benefits. this effort to overhaul medicaid strikes at the heart of a program that has long served as a safety net for low-income Americans. medicaid is a joint federal and state program that provides free or lowcost health coverage to more than 87 million people across the country. it covers children, pregnant women, seniors, people with disabilities, and lowincome adults, many of whom would otherwise go without basic care.
According to the congressional Budget office (cBo), the proposed changes could result in up to 8.6 million people losing medicaid coverage—not necessarily because they’re ineligible, but because of the complexity of the new requirements and frequent re-verification.
Who’s most at risk?
health policy experts say the bill would disproportionately affect:
• Low-wage and gig workers with inconsistent hours, who may not consistently meet the 80-hourper-month threshold.
• Undocumented immigrants, whose care is often funded through local programs that would lose federal support.
• Seniors and individuals with disabilities, who may not be able to meet work requirements or navigate the added red tape.
• Unpaid family caregivers, many of whom stay home to care for children or aging relatives without compensation.
• People in rural and underserved areas, where access to jobs and digital infrastructure is limited. critics say these changes are not about reducing fraud, but about pushing people off the rolls through bureaucratic pressure.
D.C. illustrates the national stakes in Washington, D.c., the potential impact offers a case study of the national threat. the city already faces a $580 million medicaid shortfall and would need to come up with another $715 million to continue its healthcare Alliance Program, which provides care to over 27,000 undocumented and low-income residents.
With federal funding in jeopardy, the program’s survival—and the health of thousands—is uncertain. meanwhile, federally Qualified health centers (fQhcs) that serve nearly 1 in 5 D.c. residents are preparing for a surge in uninsured patients.
councilmember christina henderson, who has publicly opposed the bill, described the fiscal hole as unfillable. the amount of money that we’re talking about here cannot just be backfilled with something else,” she said. “there’s no amount of raising income

taxes or other things to fill all of the medicaid cuts, all of the sNAP cuts, all of the education cuts.” she also called for collective pushback: “email, call, show up, knock on doors, go to the town hall meetings. Don’t let them get away with saying, ‘oh, we didn’t know.’ You knew.”
Trump’s argument: Accountability and cost control
President trump, who has made support for the bill part of his 2025 platform, defended the changes as a step toward restoring fiscal responsibility.
“too many people are on medicaid who shouldn’t be,” he said at a recent event. “We want to help those in real need—not those who choose not to work.”
supporters of the bill argue it will curb dependency and make medicaid more efficient. But studies have shown that most working-age medicaid recipients already have jobs, and past state-level experiments with work requirements—such as in Arkansas— caused thousands to lose coverage due to missed deadlines and confusing rules, not fraud.
The Senate holds the final say As of may 26, the bill is awaiting action in the U.s senate, where several lawmakers have expressed concerns about its unintended consequences. Advocates warn that if passed, the bill could dismantle one of the country’s core public health pillars—with fallout felt in every state. for those relying on medicaid, the uncertainty is growing. from pharmacies to emergency rooms, from small towns to major cities—the future of American healthcare access is now on the line.

the proposal to be their candidate for senate president,” she said in a statement. “Whoever will be elected by our peers—whether it is me or not—there are certain congressional reforms that need to be undertaken.”
marcos, the eldest sister of President ferdinand “Bongbong” marcos Jr., is currently serving her second term and chairs the senate committee on electoral reforms and People’s Participation. though aligned with the ruling political family, she has at times taken independent positions on matters such as foreign policy and budget transparency.
Also being mentioned is former senate President Vicente “tito” sotto iii, who returned to the chamber after a successful bid in the 2025 midterm elec-
tions. While sotto has not issued any public statements about a renewed leadership bid, his experience and longstanding relationships in the chamber make him a credible figure in any transition scenario.
senator ronald “Bato” dela rosa, aligned with the Duterte bloc, has stated that their coalition has yet to settle on a candidate but has emphasized the importance of “fairness and consultation” in any leadership negotiations. other names reportedly being watched include senator Alan Peter cayetano, known for his maneuvering across various administrations, and senator Juan miguel migz” Zubiri, who stepped down as senate president in may 2024 but remains an influential figure with bipartisan ties.
Despite these developments, escudero maintains a firm grip on the position. since assuming the senate presidency last year, he has kept the chamber relatively stable and retains the backing of a majority coalition. his technocratic style and policy fluency continue to earn him support from various blocs.
Any shift in leadership would require a majority vote—at least 13 of the 24 senators—making a transition feasible only if a significant realignment occurs during the session break. for now, the speculation remains just that. But the quiet signaling from key figures, and the strategic silence of others, suggest that the race for one of the country’s most powerful posts may already be taking shape behind closed doors. n

the trip coincided with Vice President sara Duterte’s birthday and included her mother, elizabeth Zimmerman. marcos joined the Duterte family in what appeared to be a quiet show of political unity. more than anyone, i know the feeling of being separated from one’s homeland,” she wrote on social media after the visit—a reference to her own family’s years in exile following the 1986 ouster of her father, ferdinand marcos sr.
her support for Duterte dates back nearly a decade, rooted in a personal promise. During the 2016 presidential campaign, Duterte assured imee marcos that if he became president, he would allow the burial of her father, former President ferdinand marcos sr., at the Libingan ng mga Bayani — a request the marcos family had long sought. After his election, he kept that promise.
“i promised during the campaign,” Duterte later said, “that if i became president, i would allow the burial of marcos in the Libingan ng mga Bayani. one of those who asked was imee.”
that decision — carried out in November 2016 — sparked protests and multiple legal challenges, but Duterte defended it as a matter of national healing, citing marcos sr.’s status as a former president and soldier. for imee marcos, it wasn’t about legacy-building. “We just wanted a soldier’s burial,” she explained. “Not a hero’s welcome. And President Duterte gave that to us.” the supreme court upheld Duterte’s decision in a 9–5 vote, clearing the way for
“We believe in an independent Philippines— strong, sovereign, and guided by discipline and national pride,” she said. “that’s not strategy. that’s conviction.” few lawmakers have taken their defense of Duterte as far as the hague. imee marcos, along with senator robin Padilla — who made a similar visit in march — has emerged as a prominent voice challenging the icc’s authority while reinforcing nationalist opposition to its probe. in a political landscape still adjusting after the midterm elections — where dynasties continue to dominate and divisions within them have grown more visible — imee marcos’s allegiance to the Dutertes offers something rare in Philippine politics: consistency. Whether it endures or evolves will depend on what unfolds in both courtrooms and future campaign trails.
But for now, her message remains the same.
“he kept his word,” she said of rodrigo Duterte. “And i won’t forget that.” n
what became one of the most symbolic and polarizing acts of his administration. for imee, it marked not only a moment of personal closure, but the beginning of a political alliance that would grow in both visibility and intensity. in 2025, after being excluded from the senate slate endorsed by her brother, President ferdinand “Bongbong” marcos Jr., imee joined the Dutertebacked “Duterten” coalition. she won a narrow but highprofile re-election and, in her victory speech, pointedly thanked the Dutertes while omitting mention of her brother or his party. “my loyalty is to the filipino people, not to my relatives,” she later said. she has also taken a strong stance against the icc proceedings. Duterte faces charges of crimes against humanity for thousands of killings tied to his administration’s anti-drug campaign. his legal team argues that the icc lacks jurisdiction, citing the Philippines’ formal withdrawal from the rome statute in march 2019. the court, however, maintains it retains jurisdiction over alleged crimes committed while the country was still a member — an interpretation upheld by the icc’s Pre-trial chamber and consistent with Article 127 of the rome statute. marcos has echoed those arguments. “We have a functioning judiciary,” she told reporters. “We are not a colony.” in a facebook post after her visit to the hague, she added: this isn’t just about legal defense. it’s about sovereignty.” even moments of personal tension haven’t broken the alliance. sara Duterte previously revealed that during a political falling-out, she warned imee: if your camp keeps attacking me, i’ll dig up your father’s body and throw it into the West Philippine sea.” marcos, for her part, downplayed the incident. “Politics isn’t always polite,” she said. “But i trust sara.” critics argue that the alliance is ultimately transactional. Duterte’s enduring popularity — particularly in mindanao and among the working-class electorate — remains politically valuable. his support gave imee marcos a platform after a period of cooling relations within the marcos administration. But the senator maintains that her allegiance is rooted in principle.

mANiLA — Bangko sentral ng Pilipinas (BsP) executives have consistently topped the list of highest-paid government officials, each earning roughly P20 million a year since 2020. since taking office in July 2023, BsP Governor and monetary Board chair eli remolona has remained the top-paid government official. in 2024, his compensation rose by 35%, reaching over P47.96 million.
According to the commission on Audit (coA), most of his total earnings came from allowances, bonuses, incentives and other benefits, which amounted to P33.703 million last year. earning a basic salary of P1 million per month or P12 million a year, remolona took home nearly three times what an average filipino family earns in a year — estimated at P353,000 in 2023 by the Philippine statistics Authority (PsA).
this is the first time in the past decade that a BsP governor earned nearly P50 million in a single year.
the last time a central bank chief breached P40 million a year was in 2021, when Benjamin Diokno, now on the monetary Board, served as BsP governor.
Before that, governors usually made about P20 million a year, while other executives earned even less, around P15 million. today, even officials ranked below the governor are making between P20 million and P30 million a year.
Which BSP officials earned the most in 2024?
second to remolona, BsP Deputy Governor chuchi fonacier earned P4 million more in 2024, pushing her annual earnings past the P30 million mark.
Prior to stepping down, former BsP Deputy Governor francisco Dakila, in charge of the monetary and economics sector, was the third highest paid government official in 2024, with total earnings of P28.82 million — an increase of around P5 million from 2023. he was replaced by Zeno ron-

Action begins amid rising public discontent
When public patience wears thin, a government must do more than listen — it must transform. The vote spoke volumes; now, action is expected from those in power.
the Philippine midterm elections of 2025 delivered more than a change in numbers — they prompted a national pause for reflection.
Editorial
the message from voters, both at home and abroad, is unmistakable: the government’s stock of political capital is dwindling, and public patience is thinning. for President ferdinand marcos Jr., the electoral outcome was not just a referendum on his policies — it was a signal that the promise of unity, once compelling, now demands proof of performance. in response, malacañang initiated a sweeping reshuffle across the cabinet and key government offices, accompanied by a call for renewed accountability throughout the bureaucracy. these moves, while notable, are only the beginning. What the moment demands is not merely a change in personnel, but a shift in posture — one grounded in humility, urgency, and honest reflection. Governments, like individuals, reach moments when they must stop and re-evaluate their path. When systems stall, when outcomes fall short, when the people begin to disengage, the responsible course is to recalibrate. this is not weakness; it is the discipline of leadership.
Perceptions
oUr nation’s capital is supposed to be the crown jewel among all the cities in our entire archipelago. manila is the center and seat of our government. And in the eyes of the world, this city is our standard bearer and the primary destination of tourists. i’m not a resident of manila but, like many amongst us, i have maintained my keen interest in its developments and setbacks. After all, its success, or failure, is ours too. And the recent electoral victory of isko moreno ushered in a certain reasonable level of excitement and, to some degree, a sense of hope. i’m aware of the issues hurled against him as part of the fierce contest for the top executive position. they’re in the
filipinos understand recalibration intimately, especially those living overseas. Leaving the country is rarely a matter of convenience. it is a decision born of necessity — made in the hope that what is rebuilt abroad can sustain what remains at home. these migrants — workers, professionals, families — do not cling to broken systems. they adapt. they rebuild. they move forward. that same resolve must now be expected from those who govern. this midterm was a pulse check — and the results were instructive. the electorate is asking for more than symbolism. economic anxieties, inflation, and a lack of services have underscored the need for policies grounded in reality, not rhetoric. the once-solid marcos-Duterte alliance has fractured, reshaping political alignments and making space for alternative voices. reformoriented candidates are gaining traction, signaling a desire for transparency, competence, and a break from the complacency of dynastic politics. meanwhile, electoral irregularities — votebuying, disenfranchisement — remain persistent and corrosive. if public trust is to be restored, reform must move beyond rhetoric into institutional

But he already won; hence, we can only wish him good luck and extend all the possible support for the city. i don’t know him personally but, along with many of my colleagues and friends, we want him to succeed. Save our cultural heritage the city must be the primary custodian and promoter of the remaining historical destinations and structures of manila. the city is as old as many major cities of the world. Buildings, sites, parks and even the road network comprise the very essence of where we started as a country. there’s so many stories to tell – anecdotes that would make us proud, battles that flame our courage, religious mysteries that keep the faith and the journey of a people that have experienced life at its barest and destiny at its grandeur.
intramuros, for example, must be fully restored to its rightful
claim in our past. for me, the city can perhaps enter into a formal agreement with the national government so that manila can take charge in relocating the informal settlers. Probably transfer them to mayor isko’s tondotels. Give them the dignity that they deserve, too. for those who cannot be transferred, or don’t like to go because they believe that they also have the legal claim to the properties since they stayed there shortly after World War ii, must have homes that are well built and aesthetically appropriate inside the Walled city. Let’s stop embarrassing ourselves any further. i’ve seen tourists in the area for countless times. i could see and sense their disappointment while walking in the streets adorned with cobble stones. How Filipino students are going global without leaving home
Broad Cast
J I n G c astañeda
A GeNerAtioN ago, global education meant getting on a plane and studying in a foreign land. today, it might mean logging into a Zoom class, sharing a Google Doc with a student in another country, or joining a cross-border online discussion about climate change.
this is the heartbeat of collaborative online international Learning (coiL) and it is changing the way filipino students experience international education and virtual global classrooms.
At the international coiL conference 2025, i had the honor of addressing educators, policymakers, and academic leaders who are reimagining the future of higher education in the Philippines. What unites us is not just an academic framework—it is a shared belief in a more inclusive, connected, and purposeful approach to learning. coiL is not just a method. it is a movement, as cheD Deputy executive Director and international Affairs service head Atty.
Lily freida milla said in her keynote speech. it breaks down walls, amplifies diverse voices, and equips learners with the intercultural competencies needed for a truly interconnected world,” according to Atty. milla. And what began as an idea, a dream to link filipino classrooms to global conversations, has now become a nationally supported digital learning initiative that touches students from Luzon to mindanao. through the Bayanihan coiL innovation Laboratory (iLab), our higher education institutions (heis) are modernizing their approach, reaching students who may never have dreamed of international academic exposure. internationalization is one of the core programs of the commission on higher education (cheD) under the leadership of its chairman, Dr. J. Prospero de Vera iii Why TikTok, podcasts and Facebook groups are the new classrooms
We must be honest: learning has changed. information doesn’t just live in books or blackboards. it’s on our phones, our feeds, our livestreams. We learn from content creators, influencers, facebook groups, and even group conversations.
action. there is still time. the administration can still change course. But time, as many filipinos already know, is a resource that cannot be squandered. if this moment is to mean anything, it must produce more than headlines. it must deliver results. those outcomes will not be measured by slogans, but by functioning systems, amplified voices, and
when they visited this spanish enclave. the solutions to the travails of intramuros is beyond the regular clout of the intramuros Administration. saving this hispanic citadel which was founded during the time of miguel Lopez de Legazpi in 1571 must be a collaboration between several national government agencies and the local government of manila. the parent agency of the intramuros Administration, the Department of tourism, hopefully welcomes any initiative that would enjoin the different valuable efforts in rebuilding the image of this tourist destination. i’ll be the first one to wander inside the walled city once this is done. Make the whole city safer Achieving a full haven of safety and security for the city’s residents and visitors, similar to singapore, is definitely more than mere police work. the challenge is much broader and more complex. it’s tied with the poor
economic conditions that plague many parts of manila, such as the depressed communities of tondo, port areas towards Navotas and malabon, side-streets towards caloocan and La Loma and many other areas deprived of decent housing and livelihood. in other words, poverty lurks and breeds criminality. then it becomes a vicious cycle. Lack of safety further worsens poverty because businesses hardly thrive in such conditions. the power of the city mayor is vast. he can make a huge difference if he can compel and inspire the city’s police force to again become manila’s finest –both respected and feared. After all, he was once their brother-inarms. he must have the instinct, knowledge and skills that would convert the policemen into agents of growth by providing the needed sense of security to our business communities, especially in the vibrant chinatown and the commercial hub in malate.
this must be coupled with the ease of doing business in manila. it will make financial wonders if the city booms because of the smooth processes that would support, not hamper, businesses. i heard horror stories and in fact helped some of my friends who had some unpleasant experiences in city hall before. i had to call congressman roland Valeriano for help. he promptly heeded the legitimate request. the city must again be on top of the list in our country’s local government units. this can be done. i hope that the leaders of manila will start moving forward as one team with the sole strategic objective of again making their city the pride and vanguard of our country’s progress and destination of choice. NAIA’s take-off
in this world of constant communication, education in the digital age is no longer confined to a classroom.
But it is not about replacing the classroom—it is about expanding digital learning platforms. today’s educators are no longer just lecturers. they are mentors, influencers, and multiplatform content producers. they curate knowledge across platforms and, in doing so, connect to learners not just with content, but with meaning.
Why does this matter? Because research tells us that people remember stories twenty-two times more than plain facts. When math is presented through a budgeting story, when chemistry becomes a cooking vlog on tiktok, or when a student livestreams their academic journey, education becomes immersive. it becomes human, relevant, and life-changing.
And the more platforms we use with purpose—whether it’s a Viber group, a podcast, or a radio show—the more we empower young people to not just receive information, but to create and share their own. this is the heart of transformative digital learning in the Philippines. oN a large-format, lined notebook – bigger than the standard size we use in schools – tycoon ramon Ang writes down, with some illustrations, the improvements made at the Ninoy Aquino international Airport (NAiA), the country’s main gateway. there will be more, he said during a recent afternoon chat at his office at the san miguel corp. headquarters in ortigas.
Ang is president of the smcled New NAiA infra corp. (NNic), the private consortium now managing the airport. terminal 5, for instance, is underway, he said. the old Nayong Pilipino area has been cleared and once the building of the Philippine Village hotel, which ceased operations in 2001, is demolished, NNic will construct a new terminal –t5 – which would be connected to t2 and would help decongest the airport as it is expected to accommodate at least 30 million passengers yearly.
“About 30-35 million,” an excited rsA said.
t1 will be for international flights of low-cost carriers while t3 will be for full service airlines. t2 will be for domestic flights and t5 will accommodate the domestic flights of the flag-car-
rier Philippine Airlines. t3 will handle the international flights of PAL. the planned changes are being implemented in phases but we’ve already been seeing improvements since NNic took over last year.
During recent trips locally and abroad, i have personally experienced faster departures and arrivals at t3. the bay areas are likewise less congested than they used to be.
i’ve also benefited from the establishment of a new centralized transportation hub at t3, where all four-wheel ride-hailing services have a dedicated area at the multipurpose parking building. the only problem left to resolve here is that the internet signal in the area is intermittent, which makes it difficult for passengers, at least this was what i experienced a few months ago.
Last year, NAiA achieved its highest-ever passenger and flight numbers, signaling the growing strength and potential of air travel in the Philippines.
NAiA handled 50.1 million passengers last year, up by 5.08 percent from its previous high in 2019 before the pandemic, and by 10.43 percent higher than in 2023. the airport also recorded 293,488 flights, an 8.08 percent increase compared to 2019 and a 4.83 percent rise from the year before. these figures exclude
general aviation but show the steady growth in demand for travel, according to NNic more filipinos are flying, and more visitors are coming to the Philippines,” Ang said. the changes being implemented by NNic so far are working, benefiting both passengers and the airlines. even tycoon Lance Gokongwei, chairman of low-cost carrier cebu Pacific, has noticed the changes.
“You can really see the difference in trade and operations. credit to them (NNic), they move fast. i would say it’s responsive to both the consumers and airlines.that’s why we support privatization,” Lance said during a recent chat. there will be more positive changes for sure. i am looking forward to more safety precautions as well – such as better security bollards across the airport – following the recent tragedy at NAiA.
NNic has assured us that it will conduct an audit of the bollards to determine where reinforcements – such as deeper foundations or structural upgrades – are needed for existing bollards that were installed in 2019, along with similar protective barriers, particularly in high foot traffic areas. the airport operator is also modifying the current diagonal passenger drop-off layout at ter-

elmore capule, the deputy governor in charge of the corporate services sector, ranked fourth with P26.53 million in earnings for 2024, reflecting a P4 to P5 million pay hike.
monetary Board member romeo Bernardo, former finance secretary, was also paid around P26 million last year. he has been in office since september 2023 and will be serving a sixyear term. the sixth to tenth highest paid government employees were also from the BsP:
• Senior Assistant Governor
edna Villa - P25.82 million
• Senior Assistant Governor Johnny estanislao ravaloP25.36 million
• Monetary Board member
rosalia De Leon - P25.28 million
• Retired Deputy Governor eduardo Bobier - P23.75 million
• Monetary Board member Benjamin Diokno - P23.52 million every month, this means these officials earned around P2 million, equivalent to more than P70,000 per day over a year.
But what exactly does the BSP do?
its primary responsibility is to maintain price stability in the country through sustainable monetary policy. simply put, the central bank manages how money moves through the economy. one way the BsP does this is by adjusting the policy interest rate. this rate affects how much it costs to borrow money. When the BsP raises it, loans become more expensive, so people and businesses tend to
borrow less, thereby spending less. When the rate goes down, borrowing becomes cheaper, which usually leads to more spending. it is a balancing act to help keep inflation, or how fast prices of goods and services rise, under control. in 2024, inflation dropped sharply from 4.4% in July to 3.3% in August, later reaching a low of 1.9% in september. starting october 2024, inflation slightly rose, hitting 2.9% in January 2025 before slowing again to 1.4% in April, the lowest since November 2019. the BsP, however, does more than set interest rates. it also regulates banks and ensures there’s enough money circulating in the economy — not too much, not too little. to manage this balance, it buys or sells government securities and sets reserve require-
ments, or the amount of money banks must keep and cannot lend out. While more BsP executives now rank among the highest-paid government officials, there have been times when leaders from other agencies or banks earned more than some central bank officials. in 2020, the top earners included the chief Justice and associate justices of the supreme court, as well as executives from the United coconut Planters Bank, which later merged with Land Bank of the Philippines. officials from the Development Bank of the Philippines and the Government service insurance system were also among the highest paid, making the top 10. in recent years, however, all of the 10 highest-paid government officials have come from the BsP. n

minals 1 and 2 departure areas – which was already in place before NNic’s takeover – to a safer, parallel unloading configuration. together with the planned bollard reinforcements, this adjustment will provide an added layer of protection for passengers, well-wishers, airport staff and others who regularly access the terminal curbside, NAiA said. How Filipino students are going global...
han COIL story in her speech, Atty. milla reminded us of how far this movement has come. it began in 2018 when tarlac Agricultural University and ten other state universities and colleges in the Philippines formed a consortium that became the seedbed of innovation. their mutual commitment—to complement and collaborate—led to the opening of the first Bayanihan iLab. By 2021, in the middle of the pandemic, this initiative evolved into “internationalization in the New Normal: modernizing the iLab,” expanding to fifteen more institutions across the country. this was not just about upgrading technology. it was about transforming mindsets. “in the spirit of bayanihan,” Atty. milla said, “this initiative builds a community of practitioners, advocates, and changemakers.” that community now includes universities from sulu to Antique, from calapan to Guimaras, all united by a common purpose: to bridge local and global education through innovation, cooperation, and storytelling.
As a veteran broadcaster and media producer, i recognize the value of such a platform. the Bayanihan coiL iLab is a literal and symbolic stage for students, especially those from underserved areas, to develop global citizenship, intercultural communication skills, and digital literacy. it answers the call for a more equitable and inclusive model of global education. No longer is study abroad the only path to global exposure. Now, a student in south cotabato can co-design a project with peers in thailand. A faculty member in sulu can present case studies in an online conference in europe.
Digital skills are life skills: Why every Filipino student needs global access coiL empowers what Atty. milla called the critical aspects of inclusive internationalization. it strengthens pedagogical innovation, blending synchronous and asynchronous learning modes. it cultivates intercultural communication, digital literacy, and collaborative problem-solving— skills essential to the 21st-century workforce. it also integrates global perspectives into the curriculum, ensuring that every lesson extends far beyond the class-
room walls. And this matters even more in the Philippine context of digital inequality. We know that more than onefifth of filipinos still live below the poverty line. the bitter truth is that many students face barriers: no Wi-fi, no laptop, and sometimes not even electricity. Yet we have seen time and again that filipino learners are resilient. they study under streetlights, hike up hills for mobile signal, and cross rivers just to reach a classroom. in our country, education is the bridge between hardship and hope. But now, multiplatform communication becomes the amplifier. through a basic mobile phone, a community radio program, or a downloaded Youtube educational video, learning reaches those the system often leaves behind. it may not be perfect, but it is powerful.
The future of education is now: What we must do next
As we look forward, we must ask not just what we teach, but how we empower.
if education is the door, then multiplatform communication is the key. it’s how we unlock global opportunities from local classrooms. But keys don’t turn by themselves! We must invest in infrastructure for rural education.
We must also support teachers by training them to use educational technology confidently and by helping them master the art of storytelling for learning. equally important is ensuring that cheD and our state universities and colleges are equipped to scale digital education innovations already in motion.
At the same time, we need to build stronger partnerships— with the media, with non-government organizations, with tech providers, and with global academic institutions. most crucially, we must give our students a voice: not just as learners, but as content creators, critical thinkers, and problem-solvers in their own communities.
Atty. milla put it best when she said coiL ensures that education is not just about mobility for some, but equity for all. Let us remember: we’re not just teaching subjects — we are preparing filipino students to thrive in a globalized, digital world. We are helping them tell their stories, see beyond their communities, and dream not just of careers, but of meaningful

Freddie Aguilar laid to rest
by AJPress
FREDDIE Aguilar, the folk music icon whose song “Anak” became a global anthem and who helped define the soul of Original Pilipino Music (OPM), was laid to rest on Tuesday, May 27, 2025— the same day he passed away. He was 72.
Aguilar died at the Philippine Heart Center from cardiac arrest due to complications from kidney failure and pneumonia, according to hospital officials. His death was confirmed by Atty. George Briones, general counsel of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), where Aguilar once served as national executive vice president.
In keeping with Islamic tradition, Aguilar—who embraced Islam in 2013 and took the name Abdul Farid—was buried within 24 hours at the Manila Islamic Cemetery, also known as the Manila South Cemetery. The rites were overseen by the Muntinlupa City Muslim Affairs Office.
His wife, Jovie Gatdula Albao, shared a heartfelt message on social media following the burial:
“I will live a good life so I can meet you in Jannah. Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un… It was a good fight, because we are fighting together.”
A voice for the people
Born Ferdinand Pascual Aguilar on February 5, 1953, in Santo Tomas, Isabela, Aguilar began writing songs at age 14. He left engineering school in Manila to pursue music full time, performing in clubs and on sidewalks— eventually rising to national prominence.
In 1978, Aguilar released “Anak” (Child), a stirring ballad of remorse and parental love.
It became a global sensation, translated into 51 languages and selling over 30 million copies. It remains one of the most iconic Filipino songs of all time. Protest, patriotism, and politics
A cultural legacy From “Magdalena” to “Katarungan,” Aguilar’s catalog chronicled the lives of the poor, the betrayed, and the disillusioned— his lyrics always anchored in truth, humility, and national identity.
Aguilar’s music resonated deeply during critical moments in Philippine history. His rendition of “Bayan Ko” (My Country) became a protest anthem during the 1986 People Power Revolution, helping fuel the public movement that restored democracy. Later in life, Aguilar became an outspoken supporter of former President Rodrigo Duterte and engaged in national politics—an alignment that drew both criticism and support. He stood by his belief that music and governance were deeply linked in a nation still reckoning with inequality and injustice.
He received multiple national and international awards and is widely credited with globalizing Filipino folk music.
Aguilar is survived by his wife Jovie and four children from a previous marriage—Maegan, Jonan, Isabella, and Jeriko. His daughter Maegan is also a singer.
“Freddie Aguilar gave us the soundtrack to our joys, regrets, awakenings, and revolutions,” one fan wrote. “His music was the voice of our conscience.”
Aguilar may have sung his final note, but his voice lives on— forever playing in homes, radios, and memories.

‘Lilo & Stitch’ live-action hits record-breaking Memorial Day debut with Filipina stars among cast
Tia Carrere and Sydney Agudong, two Filipina American actresses from Hawai‘i, join Disney’s reimagined Lilo & Stitch — as the film rockets past Memorial Day box office records
by AJPress
LOS ANGELES — Disney’s liveaction Lilo & Stitch launched into box office history over Memorial Day weekend, earning $183 million domestically and $361.6 million worldwide, the highest Memorial Day opening on record. Among the ensemble cast, two Filipina-American actresses — Sydney Agudong, in the lead role of Nani Pelekai, and Tia Carrere, who makes a legacy appearance as Mrs. Kekoa — lend their voices, heritage, and local perspective to a film deeply rooted in Hawaiian culture.
From animation to live-action
Originally released in 2002, Lilo & Stitch became a beloved Disney film for its heartfelt story of ‘ohana friendship, and resilience. The 2025 remake, directed by Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On) and produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, preserves the emotional foundation of the original while delivering a visually rich and contemporary reimagining.
Much of the film’s critical and commercial success has been attributed to its culturally grounded storytelling and casting choices that reflect the real diversity of Hawai‘i.
Sydney Agudong’s breakout role
Taking center stage is 24-yearold Sydney Agudong, a Kaua‘i native of Filipino and Polynesian descent, who plays Nani Pelekai, Lilo’s older sister and guardian. Known previously for TV roles and music released under the stage name Jayne Doe, Agudong steps into her first major film role with an emotional performance that highlights Nani’s strength, sacrifice, and vulnerability.
“For so many of us, Nani represents the eldest sibling shouldering everything quietly — and doing it out of love,” Agudong said in an interview. “It felt powerful to bring that reality to life from the lens of someone who understands where she’s coming from.”
Tia Carrere’s full-circle return
Tia Carrere, who voiced Nani in the original animated film, returns in the live-action version as Mrs.
Kekoa, a local social worker who monitors Lilo’s living situation.
The Honolulu-born actress and Grammy-winning musician is one of the earliest Filipina American performers to break into mainstream Hollywood, with roles in Wayne’s World, True Lies, and Relic Hunter.
“Coming back to this story means everything,” Carrere said in a press feature. “It’s about our people, our families, our values — and to now be part of telling that story from a different generation is incredibly meaningful.”
Her appearance offers a bridge between the beloved original and its new interpretation — connecting viewers across generations and cultures.
A record-setting box office launch
Lilo & Stitch shattered records over the holiday weekend, delivering Disney its largest Memorial Day theatrical release to date. Theater chains such as AMC and Regal reported near sold-out showings in major cities and strong repeat viewership, particularly among family audiences and nostalgic fans of the original.
A special screening held at Disney’s Burbank studios on May 17, 2025, included a traditional Hawaiian luau with live music and dance, reflecting the film’s cultural roots . Analysts say the film’s opening sets a new bar for Disney liveaction projects, especially
amid concerns over streaming competition and remake fatigue.
With strong word-of-mouth and international interest, Lilo & Stitch is expected to maintain momentum well into the summer.
Representation that resonates
Beyond box office numbers, the film is earning praise for its sincere depiction of Hawaiian life and its decision to cast actors with real ties to the culture. Both Agudong and Carrere are emblematic of this direction — sharing Filipino heritage and local roots that inform their performances.
“It’s not just about seeing yourself on screen — it’s about being seen with respect, depth, and truth,” said one viewer after a Los Angeles screening. “They got it right this time.”
A win for authentic storytelling
The presence of two Filipina American actresses in prominent roles marks a notable shift in Hollywood’s depiction of Pacific Islander and AsianAmerican stories. As studios face increasing pressure to improve representation, Lilo & Stitch stands out not just for who is in front of the camera, but how the story honors the culture it draws from.
With its universal themes of family, grief, and belonging — paired with culturally respectful casting — Lilo & Stitch has proven that stories grounded in authenticity can resonate deeply and perform globally.
Lav Diaz sets Alexandre Dumas adaptation as next film to be shot in Philippines
by Kristofer Purnell Philstar.com
FILMMAKER Lav Diaz has set his sights on his next movie following the premiere of "Magellan," starring Gael Garcia Bernal, at the recently concluded Cannes Film Festival.
Variety confirmed that Diaz has entered preproduction on "An Amazon," based on a short story by French writer Alexandre Dumas.
The director's Sine Olivia Pilipinas will produce the film with French production company Silverbelt Films, which previously oversaw the Filipino short film "Bold Eagle" by Whammy Alcazaren.
"An Amazon" will be shot in the Philippines and will feature internationally well-known actors. It will be Diaz's first movie in English.
"A young man meets a mysterious and masked woman during a ball. She refuses to disclose her identity, and swears to kill him if he reveals their affair," a synopsis for the movie goes.
Diaz said in a statement that Dumas' story kept striking him over and over again since discussing it with Silverbelt's Pierre-Yves Bezat.
"The narration of 'An Amazon' has deep emotions and deep mystery around it, and is more contemporary than ever as our modern dictators' masks are cracking everyday," Diaz added.
Dumas is best known for writing the books "The Three Musketeers" and "The Count of Monte Cristo."
The version of "Magellan" that screened at this year's Cannes is a three-hour cut of Diaz's
intended nine-hour feature about the Portuguese explorer and his wife Beatriz, played by Ângela Ramos. Ronnie Lazaro and Hazel Orencio, frequent collaborators of Diaz, have supporting roles in the film that was shot in the Philippines, Portugal, and Spain.
Diaz previously premiered "Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan" at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival's Un Certain Regard category, while his "Ang Hupa" premiered in the 2019 edition's Directors' Fortnight.

How Catriona Gray deals with ‘chronic pain’ for ‘over half my life’
by Deni rose BernArDo Philstar.com
these with a literal burden on her back is more remarkable.
At a recent launch of Ogawa’s new Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered massage chairs, Catriona opened up about dealing with Scoliosis since her teens and how she does not let it get into the way of her dreams.
“I have a condition called Scoliosis, so chronic back pain is something that I have known very well since the age of 12, so that's more than half of my life,” she shared. According to her, she is able to manage her condition by observing a self-care routine.
“I really try to stick to a routine. My routine looks like I try to go to sleep at the same time every night. I know that's not possible all the time, but as much as possible, even when I travel, even when I'm jet lagged or I have late events, I try to get back into that rhythm and also I really need to find ways to move and mobilize my body,” she said.
“And so being in heels all day, being on the go every day, like I really feel the effect of that in my body physically, and so being able to carve out time to use my Ogawa chair allows me not only to mentally just take a little break… I feel like I'm in my own little zone, like it's a ‘Do not disturb’ zone, and also I really get to relax and soothe those aching muscles that I have, which chronically give me quite, you know, the bother, but with my Ogawa chair I've noticed a significant change to just how I feel and also I'm carving out that time for myself, so even mentally I feel recharged.”
A quietly powerful film about an unexpected connection between two people at different stages of life, a moving exploration of age, grief, and the courage to love again.
by AJPress
MANILA — Age, grief, and societal expectations collide in Only We Know, the newest film set to premiere in Philippine cinemas on June 11, 2025, and in U.S. theaters on June 13, 2025. The film stars two of the country’s most revered actors— Charo Santos-Concio and Dingdong Dantes—in a tender but unconventional story of love between people separated by decades and shaped by life’s emotional scars.
Directed and written by Irene Emma Villamor (Meet Me in St. Gallen, Sid & Aya), Only We Know tells the story of Betty, a 60-year-old retired English teacher, and Ryan, a widowed engineer in his 40s. As their connection deepens, they find themselves confronting not only personal grief but also a society that struggles to understand their bond.
From concept to cinema: A seven-year journey
The film took nearly seven years to bring to life. Initially pitched in 2018, production faced multiple delays due to scheduling conflicts and the COVID-19 pandemic. But for Villamor, the long wait was worth it.
“This is not your usual romantic pairing,” Villamor said. “But the emotions are universal. It’s about connection, healing, and the courage to love again.”
A love story without labels
In a scene from the teaser
trailer, a cashier assumes Betty is Ryan’s mother—an awkward but all-too-familiar moment for couples in May-December relationships. Ryan’s quick clarification becomes a turning point that reflects the central theme of the film: love defies age, stigma, and expectation.
“It’s a story of love without labels,” said Santos-Concio.
“Betty isn’t searching for validation—she’s searching for meaning.”
For Dingdong Dantes, who portrays the emotionally bruised Ryan, the script offered something rare.
“This film asks audiences to rethink their assumptions about who gets to fall in love—and when,” he shared.
The film marks a major first for Santos-Concio, who has never headlined a romantic drama. The veteran actress, known for her dramatic gravitas and decades-long television career, embraced the role’s emotional demands with grace and vulnerability.
Ensemble cast and production
The movie features a powerhouse supporting cast that includes Shamaine Buencamino, Joel Saracho, Al Tantay, Max Collins, Soliman Cruz, Isabel Oli, Johnny Revilla, Rafa Siguion-Reyna, Yesh Burce, and Gil Cuerva. It is co-produced by Cornerstone Studios, AgostoDos Pictures, Star Cinema, and 7K Entertainment.
Theaters
Coming Soon to U.S.
Following its Philippine premiere, Only We Know will debut in select U.S. theaters starting June 13, 2025. Screenings will be available through major chains like AMC Theatres and Fandango, with early listings confirming venues in the greater Los Angeles area, including Glendale. Tickets are available on Atom Tickets, AMC, and Fandango. Audiences in North America can expect a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant story that challenges stereotypes around age-gap relationships and portrays mature love with sincerity and honesty.
A personal but universal tale
Though fictional, the story is grounded in real emotional terrain—loss, loneliness, rediscovery.
“People tend to judge quickly,” Santos-Concio said. “But love—true love—always finds a way to make itself understood.”
Marian Rivera, Dantes’ wife, has publicly expressed her support for the film and its story, praising its depth and message.
“She’s my biggest cheerleader,” Dantes added. Only We Know is poised to become one of 2025’s most talked-about Filipino films—not because of spectacle or fantasy, but because of its quiet, fearless honesty. For all who have loved beyond what was considered “acceptable,” it offers validation. For those who haven’t, it offers understanding.

Albee Benitez denies ‘illicit relationship’ with Ivana Alawi
by Deni rose M. AfiniDAD-BernArDo Philstar.com
BRIGHTLIGHT Productions owner and newlyelected Bacolod City Congressman Alberto “Albee” Benitez reacted to the affidavit of his estranged wife Dominique “Nikki” Benitez, calling her allegations “baseless and retaliatory.”
In a statement issued by Benitez’s legal counsel Peter Sanchez, Albee denied Nikki’s accusations, including his alleged “illicit relationship” with sexy actress Ivana Alawi.
“Mayor Alfredo Abelardo ‘Albee’ Benitez firmly denies the baseless and retaliatory allegations made against him by his estranged spouse under Republic Act No. 9262, or the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act (VAWC), for alleged economic and psychological abuse,” part of the politician’s statement read.
“It is equally unsettling that a third party has been unnecessarily dragged into this private matter. The mention of individuals unrelated to the merits of the case only serves to divert attention and inflame public sentiment in the complainant’s favor. Section 44 of R.A. 9262 explicitly mandates the confidentiality of all proceedings and parties involved. The unwarranted disclosure of identities and unverified claims constitutes a clear violation of this provision.”
According to the statement, “This case was filed shortly after Mayor Benitez initiated annulment proceedings in 2024, raising serious doubts about the complainant’s motives.”
“Every property acquired during the marriage — including the multi-million peso residences in Forbes Park and Dasmarinas Village — was fully paid for by Mayor Benitez using his own resources, but titled in the name of the complainant, Dominique Lopez-Benitez,” the statement added.
“This also includes high-value assets such as condominium units, luxury vehicles, and a
substantial amount of publicly listed shares, all of which were funded by Mayor Benitez but registered under her name.”
Besides properties, Benitez claimed to have also provided for his estranged wife’s luxurious lifestyle.
“Despite a judicial dissolution of their property regime in 2004, Mayor Benitez continued to provide not just ordinary support but a high standard of living, shouldering personal, household, and even extended family expenses for more than two decades.”
According to the statement, the public servant has evidences to prove his innocence.
“Mayor Benitez remains fully cooperative with all legal processes and is confident that the evidence — financial records, property documents, and testimonies will disprove these false and vindictive claims.”
The statement came after parts of Nikki’s affidavit filing VAWC against her estranged husband went viral online on Thursday, May 29.
The complaint alleged that Albee admitted to have illegitimate children and that he is now in a relationship with Alawi, which resulted in Nikki suffering from “mental or emotional anguish.”

AS we celebrate Father’s Day on June 15, allow me to feature fathers from all walks of life. I asked seven fathers (second batch): (1) How does it feel to be a father? and (2) Define fatherhood. The respondents’ replies are as follows:
Pastor Roland Isip: (1) “I’m blessed to have my wife Anna and two wonderful daughters Jelynne and Joy and seven grandchildren. God gave me a purpose in life and a lot of good things to look forward for all His glory, honor and praise. In Psalms 127:3, my children are heritage, gifts from God; in Verse 4, they are “arrows” for me. It’s really a joyful feeling for me when I am privileged by God to be a father and at the same time living our life in the whole counsel of God.”
(2) “As a father, I must have the wisdom from God. Proverbs 9:10 states that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. I could
Roland Isip: ‘As a father, I must have the wisdom from God’
have not been better bringing them up when they were young without the guidance from God. Proverbs 22:6 also says that ‘train up the children the way they should go so when they grow up they won’t depart from it.’
As a God-fearing father, I have demonstrated the fruit of the Holy Spirit which is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness and long suffering. There is nothing more perfect way to fatherhood, except doing it diligently within the whole counsel of the almighty God.”
Vallejo-based fashion designer and wedding consultant Henry Roxas Ayson: (1) “I feel blessed to see my children thriving as a result of my efforts as a father, and I believe being a loving parent is a wonderful way to show appreciation for the love I’ve received. A beautiful way to honor God’s love.” (2) “A father’s role as the pillar of the home means he should provide a stable foundation for his family and set a positive example for his children to follow. A father’s love for his family transforms his responsibility to provide for
them into a heartfelt desire to give them the best life possible. When a father loves his family, his desire to give them a good life becomes a natural extension of that love, rather than a sense of duty or obligation.”
Joselito Constantino, former library assistant at Ateneo de Manila University and father of singer Yeng Constantino: (1) “Ang pagiging isang ama ay may magkahalong damdamin. Santacruzan: A Filipino tradition of pageantry and faith
Santacruzan is a Filipino tradition that combines Catholic devotion and cultural pageantry. Held at the end of May, it honors the Virgin Mary and Saint Helena through a procession of faith, beauty, and symbolic grace.
by AJPress
A FLORAL farewell to May
As May draws to a close in the Philippines, something transcendent takes place. The sun softens. Bougainvillea trails from balconies. Brass bands tune up beside village chapels. And on streets transformed into corridors of archways and blossoms, a procession begins.
This is Santacruzan — part pageant, part pilgrimage, and wholly Filipino. It is a tradition where history, faith, and artistry converge in a floral farewell to the month of May. For many Filipinos, especially those raised abroad or encountering the ritual for the first time, it is an invitation: to step into a story centuries old, wrapped in lace and light, carried forward by devotion and grace. A month that blooms in prayer The Santacruzan is not a standalone event—it is the culminating celebration of Flores de Mayo, or “Flowers of May,” a Catholic devotion introduced by Spanish missionaries in the 19th century. For thirty days, communities gather in chapels
(kapilyas) and churches to offer flowers to the Blessed Virgin Mary, recite the Rosary, and sing hymns of reverence.
The tradition deepened in 1867, when Filipino priest Mariano Sevilla published Flores de María, a devotional booklet that encouraged families to dedicate the entire month to Mary through floral offerings and daily prayers. What began as liturgical instruction soon took root in towns and barrios, evolving into one of the Philippines’ most beloved expressions of faith.
In the afternoons, children walk barefoot down dirt roads with fresh blooms in hand. Elders lead the prayers; young voices echo them. Petals are scattered before Marian icons as a gentle act of devotion. The moment is quiet, but rich in meaning. This is how May begins.
The cross, the queen, and the crowned procession
As May ends, the quiet builds into something grand: the Santacruzan. This final celebration brings to life the legend of Saint Helena (Reyna Elena). According to Christian tradition, Helena, mother of
Roman Emperor Constantine, discovered the True Cross in Jerusalem in the fourth century.
In the Filipino version, that sacred quest is told not through books but through a living tableau. Streets become runways of reverence. Girls and young women, called sagalas are chosen to portray biblical and symbolic figures — Reyna Fe (Faith), Reyna Esperanza (Hope), Reyna Caridad (Charity), Reyna Justicia (Justice), Reyna Mora (representing interfaith harmony), and many more.
Each sagala walks beneath a floral arch, clad in a terno or traditional Filipiniana gown. At the head of the procession comes Reyna Elena, crowned and radiant, bearing a cross and flanked by a boy portraying her son, Constantine. The atmosphere is celebratory yet sacred. Families line the streets, fanning themselves in the early evening heat. Musicians follow with hymns and haranas. Candles flicker. The procession moves forward—not in haste, but in ceremony, as if time itself pauses to let faith take form.
A procession that crosses oceans
Though born in the archipelago, the Santacruzan has long since crossed seas. Filipino communities abroad now recreate this tradition— transforming church courtyards and suburban streets into familiar gardens of faith.
For many second-generation Filipino Americans, walking as a sagala or helping organize a Santacruzan is more than a cultural role. It is a bridge to an identity that spans continents. Through this tradition, they discover their roots not just in genealogy, but in shared memory—in devotion practiced under the same May sky, whether in Manila or in another part of the world. Even among non-Filipinos, the procession captures attention. It is beauty with meaning. Ritual with history. Faith with flair. It is, simply, the Filipino spirit in motion.
In a fast-moving world, the Santacruzan remains slow and deliberate. It teaches that faith is not only spoken but worn. Not only believed, but performed—
with dignity, with color, with community. It speaks to the Filipino love of ceremony, of tradition, of beauty that honors the divine.
May’s last blessing
As the final Sunday of May arrives, the petals fall one last time. The floral arches will come down. The gowns will be folded. But in hearts, something stays: the story of a queen and her cross, retold not in silence, but in song and satin.
Because for the Filipino, May does not end—it blesses. And in the Santacruzan, they remember not just who they are, but how beautifully they’ve kept walking forward.

CAN tubal ligation be reversed?
Ligation of the fallopian tubes, performed for birth control, can be reversed to allow pregnancy to take place, depending on how long a segment of the tubes were cut in the original operation. If the segments removed are too long to precluded re-anastomosis (re-connection or bridging), then it can’t be done.
The factors that will affect the success rate of pregnancy, following “reversal,” are: how old and healthy the patient is, the pregnancy history of the patient, whether the tubes were initially cut by a knife or electrocoagulation (the latter burns and injures the cut ends of the tubes and lessens the success rate), and the experience and skill of the gynecologist in microsurgery, etc.
The highest success rate (65%), according to ObGynecologist Anthony Gentile, M.D., Ph.D., of Flossmoor, Illinois, “is with reversal of tubes ligated with the thin Hukla clip, and the lowest (less than 40%) with electrocautery.” Practically the same medical facts and limitations apply to vasectomy reversal in men, which can be done by a urologist to enable vasectomized men to be fertile again. Of course, pregnancy can be achieved without the use of the fallopian tubes, but using IVF (In vitro – “test tube” – fertilization).
Can appendicitis recur?
No, once the appendix is removed properly, appendicitis (inflammation of the appendix) will not recur, because there is no more appendiceal tissue left to get inflamed. Sometimes, though, the patient may feel right lower quadrant abdominal discomfort similar to appendicitis pain days, or months, after appendectomy, but these pains could be due to post-operative adhesions or other causes brought on by other conditions. The prudent thing to do if pains recur is to visit the surgeon who performed the procedure. Why is it dangerous to shake babies?
Shaking or jarring infants and babies could lead to injury to the neck bones and disruption of the spinal cord in that area, leading to sudden death (Shaken Baby Syndrome). The neck of infants and babies is quite limp, literally weak, and unstable, that jarring or shaking the baby often leads to fatal neck injury due to severe hyperextension of the neck and severing the cervical spinal cord at the base of the brain. When PhiliP
holding an infant or a child, the head and neck should always be supported as “one piece” with the hand holding the back of the head, the neck and the upper back, acting as a “brace” that prevents the heavy head from falling back. Can I take my friend’s blood pressure pill?
No, absolutely not, unless your physician, after interviewing and examining you, recommends the same pill to control your high blood pressure. It is not only illegal for your friend to “prescribe and dispense” medications if he was not a licensed physician but also very dangerous for you. What is good for him may not be good or tolerated by you. Your friend’s good intention may backfire and do disservice to you by causing serious complications from taking the pills he gives you or advise you to take without consulting with your physician. This caveat goes true with any and all medications, even as simple as aspirin.
Do skin lotions cause cancer?
There is nothing in the medical literature that says skin moisturizing lotions or creams or gels can cause cancer. Some people may be sensitive or allergic to some form of moisturizing lotions, but we are not aware of any of these causing skin or other malignancies. We highly recommend these moisturizing skin aids for healthy skin. Each person should try to find one that suits their skin the best, and use it 2 to 3 times daily. Moisturizers for the face for women and men, and the whole body, used daily, are beneficial.
What can I do with “dryness pain” during sex?
This is a normal or physiologic condition that comes with menopause or with age, usually above 40, although even younger women could have decreased vaginal secretion to allow for a comfortable and pleasurable sex. Water-soluble lubricants, like KY Jelly, which is sterile (free of bacteria) helps tremendously in situations like this. Some women may be allergic or sensitive to some lubricants. Oil is not safe to use. And neither is saliva, since it is full of bacteria and can cause infection. It is also a good practice for the partners take a shower before and, preferably also after, an intimate encounter to prevent infection. Is heartburn a form of heart attack?
No, heartburn is a misnomer, misleading and confusing. It has nothing to do with the heart, so it is not a form of heart attack. Heartburn has been loosely used, even in medical circles, to denote stomach hyperacidity, gastric upset, or indigestion, especially following intake of spicy foods or drinking alcoholic beverages, or GERD (gastro-esophageal reflux
Contrary to popular belief or what we call “common sense,” exercise does not increase the appetite. As a matter of fact, regular exercise reduces appetite to a healthy level. This is a proven finding among those trying to lose weight, where exercise plays a vital role in the success of the regimen and the long-term maintenance of healthier weight. Exercise also reduces the risk for metabolic and cardiovascular disease and cancer. Can one get an infection from manicure?
Yes, most definitely, and especially in the toes, from pedicure. The Tinea Pedis can affect the fingernails, when a nail cutter and other instrument to remove cuticle are contaminated by the fungus in the toes or toenails of people with the infection. It is the responsibility of the beauty shops to prevent infection and the spread of infection among their customers. Washing the “instruments” and soaking them in recommended medical antiseptic solutions, or even in diluted form of chlorine, or UV-C lamp can minimize, if not prevent contamination. Chlorine solution, for one, also kills the AIDS virus on contact. When beauty shops do not follow these safe and hygienic procedures, it behooves any of us customers to report them to the company to protect the public. We must always be on our toes!

As our beloved Catholic Church shines
I HAVE been thrilled by the world’s attention to the Conclave and the election of the first American pope, Leo XIV. This moment has filled me with pride in being both a Catholic and a priest. It has made me realize that, despite its failures and weaknesses, the world still holds the Catholic Church in high regard for its sacredness, reverence, relevance, leadership, and authority. The modern papacies of John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis have also demonstrated that the Catholic Church is viewed as a crucial voice on issues of global peace, justice, and care for those suffering from poverty, war, human trafficking, migration, and various forms of moral degradation.
Recently, Hon. Justice Aggrey Muchelule, a judge in Kenya, who is not a Catholic, shared his admiration for the Catholic Church on social media. He noted that the Church stands steadfast in its pursuit of sacredness and continually seeks the wisdom of the Holy Spirit in its writings, traditions, and liturgies. He remarked: “There is a kind of wisdom that is not loud. It does not seek attention. It does not scream to be seen. It simply exists, quietly, deeply and eternally. This is the wisdom of the Catholic Church, a body that has outlived empires, survived schisms, endured scandals and yet remains standing, steady and sacred. The Catholic Church is not a trend. It is not a social wave. It is an institution that walks with time but listens to eternity. While the world busied itself
with predictions, drawing up lists of notable Cardinals, analysing political alignments and floating theories about who would be the next Pope, the College of Cardinals chose a different path. They ignored the noise. They turned away from the spotlight. They went into the sacred and returned with a name the world never imagined. Pope Leo the Fourteenth. A name that had not been whispered in the corridors of speculation. A man unknown to the headlines. A choice that silenced every analyst and reset the compass of divine selection. This is not a coincidence. It is a confirmation of the divine order.
What the Vatican did was not just elect a new Pope. They made a statement to the world. They reminded humanity that God does not follow trends. He sets them. That true leadership is not always found in the obvious. That sometimes, the one who carries the mantle is not the one the world expects, but the one heaven approves. This is the mystery of divine succession, wrapped in silence, clothed in prayer and sealed in sacred deliberation. I am not a Catholic. But with every passing day, I see clearly why this institution continues to command reverence. It is not because its members are flawless. It is not because its leaders are immune to error. It is because despite the human imperfection that exists within it, the Catholic Church remains rooted in sacred order, structured governance and spiritual discipline. It is an institution that has mastered continuity. Its longevity is not sustained by convenience but by consecration.
The election of Pope Leo the Fourteenth is a lesson to the Church and to the world. It is a call to return to structure, to sacredness, to spirit-led decision making. It is proof that an institution can be old, yet not obsolete. Ancient, yet not

IN the absence of a premarital agreement, the general community property presumption under California family code section 760 controls which provides “ ….all property, real or personal, wherever situated, acquired by a married person during the marriage while domiciled in this state is community property.” Family Code §760
This becomes a problem if you are the spouse that has the substantially higher income or the one who accumulates the majority of the assets during the marriage. You are called in family law lingo “the in spouse.” The other spouse (or in our lingo also called the “out spouse” gets a half interest on everything accumulated during the marriage even if the asset is under your name alone or it was accumulated solely due to your sweat and hard work. The out spouse, who stayed at home most of the marriage, gets a one half interest on all the accumulations during the marriage under California community property law.
For example, if you opened a savings account during the marriage under your name alone for which you religiously and diligently stash away 25% of your earnings during the marriage while your spouse blows away his/her salary during the marriage, your spouse still gets a half interest in the money you saved in your savings account.
Another example would be if you purchase a piece of real property during the marriage under “your name alone” and have your spouse sign a “quit claim” deed, your spouse may still have a claim for a half interest in your real property.
Another example would be if you owned a business prior to marriage, but due to your hard work, long hours of labor, and efforts, the business grew exponentially during the marriage, your spouse may still have a claim for an interest in the business.
Signing a premarital agreement may serve as added protection to the future “in spouse” and a hurdle for the future “out spouse” by avoiding or altering the applicability of California community property law to assets 1) already owned by each and 2) to property and income to be acquired or earned during their marriage.
Do I need a premarital agreement before getting married?
of the following: (1) The rights and obligations of each of the parties in any of the property of either or both of them whenever and wherever acquired or located; (2) The right to buy, sell, use, transfer, exchange, abandon, lease, consume, expend, assign, create a security interest in, mortgage, encumber, dispose of, or otherwise manage and control property; (3) The disposition of property upon separation, marital dissolution, death, or the occurrence or nonoccurrence of any other event; (4) The making of a will, trust, or other arrangement to carry out the provisions of the agreement; (5) The ownership rights in and disposition of the death benefit from a life insurance policy; (6) The choice of law governing the construction of the agreement; (7) Any other matter, including their personal rights and obligations, not in violation of public policy or a statute imposing a criminal penalty. However, the right of a child to support may not be adversely affected. Family Code §1612(b) Premarital agreements that are entered into voluntarily by parties who are each represented by independent counsel and aware of the effect of the agreement, a post 1985 premarital waiver of post dissolution support does not offend contemporary public policy and is not per se unenforceable. between the time that party was first presented with the final agreement and the time the agreement was signed, regardless of whether the party is represented by legal counsel. This requirement does not apply to nonsubstantive amendments that do not change the terms of the agreement.
(3) The party against whom enforcement is sought, if unrepresented by legal counsel, was fully informed of the terms and basic effect of the agreement as well as the rights and obligations the party was giving up by signing the agreement, and was proficient in the language in which the explanation of the party’s rights was conducted and in which the agreement was written. The explanation of the rights and obligations relinquished shall be memorialized in writing and delivered to the party prior to signing the agreement. The unrepresented party shall, on or before the signing of the premarital agreement, execute a document declaring that the party received the information required by this paragraph and indicating who provided that information.
(4) The agreement and the writings executed pursuant to paragraphs (1) and (3) were not executed under duress, fraud, or undue influence, and the parties did not lack capacity to enter into the agreement.

irrelevant. Traditional, yet not stagnant. It is wisdom in action. This is the wisdom of the eternal Church. This is the mystery of divine order. This is the power of the sacred. And in a world drowning in confusion, it shines like a light that cannot be hidden.”
Indeed, what a proud moment for the Catholic Church to receive admiration from people and leaders around the world, such as Judge Aggrey Muchelule. As members of the Church, I hope we promote sacredness not only within our institutions and liturgies but in all aspects of our humanity. May we continue to heed the cries of those who are deprived of their dignity as fellow children of God.
As we welcome Leo XIV as our new pope, I pray that we may unite with him and with one another in leading the world toward a path of peace, justice, and unity. Let the words of Jesus Christ in this Sunday’s Gospel (John 17:20-26) serve as our prayer: “Holy Father, I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me. I have given them the glory you gave me, so that they may be one, as we are one: I in them and you in me, that they may be brought to perfection as one, so that the world may know that you sent me and that you loved them even as you loved me.” With love, Fr.
