Biden proclaims May as AANHPI Heritage Month by AJPRESS PRESIDENT Joe Biden proclaimed May as Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month. During this month, the United States "recognizes the innumerable contributions, vibrant cultures, and rich heritage of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AA and NHPIs),â according to the proclamation. The president credited the community's "essential role in writing the American storyâ from serving the country to starting businesses. Biden added that he is âproudâ to serve alongside Vice President Kamala Harris, the first person of South Asian descent in the role, and Katherine Tai, the first Asian American U.S. trade representative. Further, the proclamation recognized the surge in anti-Asian hate crimes since the start of the
pandemic. In his first year in office, he issued an executive order denouncing the uptick in incidents and signed the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act last May 2021, which aims to make hate crime reporting more accessible and increase public outreach in multiple languages. Under the act, the Department of Justice will also designate a role to expedite the review of hate crimes amid the pandemic. "Many other incidents of anti-Asian bias, xenophobia, and harassment that surfaced throughout the COVID-19 pandemic were not even reported. We cannot allow these horrific acts to continue threatening the safety of AA and NHPI Americans â especially women, girls, and the elderly. These acts are wrong; they are un-American; and they must stop,â the proclamation said. The celebration for APAs started in 1978 when a joint congressional resolution established

Fil-Am group launches âtroll exposerâ website to combat disinformation ahead of May 9 polls
MANILA â With the May 9 polls drawing closer, a group of dual citizens of the Philippines and the United States has launched a website âexposing trollsâ at the forefront of widespread disinformation heavily influencing the elections. In a statement sent to reporters, the U.S. Filipinos for Good Governance on Monday, May 2 launched TrollExposer.com, a website dedicated to exposing troll pages, accounts, and groups on Facebook. Through its website, the group said that it âexposedâ a hundred Marcos trolls, who have coordinated with each other through fake ďľ PAGE 5 accounts, to spread fake news in sustained malicious attacks against the leading
opposition presidential candidate, incumbent Vice President Leni Robredo. âOur country has become extremely polarized through vigorous troll activity... We hope it is not too late to detoxify the minds and hearts of our people,â said Eric Lachica, USFGG Washington DC Coordinator. âTrolls have found fertile ground in weakly regulated social media to saturate the public with disinformation. These lies have been allowed to spread through Facebook for years. Having the presidency decided based on lies that re-write history and hide the fact that much of this troll activity is state-sponsored would be a tragedy.â

MANILA â Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. will represent Manila in a leadersâ summit between the United States and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) next week, Philippine Ambassador to U.S. Jose Manuel Romualdez confirmed. The envoy said the top diplomat would attend on behalf of President Rodrigo Duterte, who opted not to attend as the summit falls on a date when the country would have already named its president-elect. âIt is unfortunate that the summit is scheduled for May 12 shortly after our elections, that is why I totally understand why President Duterte cannot attend it. As the President pointed out, we will definitely have a president-elect by then, so he was being prudent, opting not to attend out of delicadeza, and avoid making decisions or commitments at the summit that might not be aligned with the policies of our next president,â Romualdez wrote in a Labor Day column Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr.
