US gov’t: Corruption in PH continues to hamper trade by AJPRESS THE issue of corruption in the Philippines continues to obstruct the trade and investment relations between Manila and Washington, according to the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR). In its 2018 National Trade Estimate Report of Foreign Trade Barriers, the USTR pointed out that corruption is a “pervasive” and “longstanding” problem in the Philippines. “National and local government agencies, particularly Bureau of Customs (BOC), are beset with various corruption issues,” the USTR said.

Just like in its 2017 report, the USTR also mentioned anew that both foreign and domestic investors have expressed concern about the “propensity of Philippine courts and regulators to stray beyond matters of legal interpretation into policymaking, as well as the lack of transparency in judicial and regulatory processes.” Investors, likewise, have raised concerns about “courts being influenced by bribery and improperly issuing temporary restraining orders to impede legitimate commerce.” Data from the USTR showed that U.S. goods exports to the Philippines in 2017 were $8.5

The U.S. goods and services trade with the Philippines totaled an estimated $27.0 billion in 2016. EPA threatens California’s right to set its own fuel economy standards

THE Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) confirmed plans on Monday, April 2 to loosen the nation’s current standards for fuel economy which they consider “too high.” If allowed to take effect, the Obama administration regulations would have required car manufacturers to double the average fuel economy of new cars and trucks to a minimum of 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025, a goal which EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt said doesn’t “comport with reality.” Part of the administration’s efforts to

THE Philippines can become an upper middle-income country by 2019, according to the state planning agency National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA). Citing the country’s sustained robust growth, NEDA said the Philippines is poised to reach the upper middleincome status earlier than the initial target of 2022. “The strong economic growth performance of the country in 2017 enabled us to achieve gross national income (GNI) per capita growth rate of 4.8 percent, higher than the target of 4.5 percent,” NEDA said in its Socioeconomic Report 2017 launched Tuesday,

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte is racing against time to get the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) passed this year, which he had promised to the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). “The MILF is in a hurry.
