PH formally withdraws from ICC by DANA

SIOSON AJPress

THE Philippine government has formally informed the United Nations (UN) about the country’s withdrawal from the Roman Statute, the treaty that created the International Criminal Court (ICC), which has begun a preliminary examination into the thousands of alleged extrajudicial killings associated with President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs. According to Philippine Permanent

Representative to the UN Teddy Boy Locsin, a formal notice on the withdrawal was delivered to UN Chef de Cabinet Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti on Thursday, March 15. Locsin uploaded a copy of the letter in a Twitter post on Friday, March 16. In the letter, the Philippine government stated that its decision to withdraw from the treaty was a “principled stand” against those who “politicize and weaponize human rights, even as its independent and well-functioning organs and agencies continue to

exercise jurisdiction over complaints, issues, problems and concerns arising from its efforts to protect its people.” The Philippine government also reaffirmed its commitment “to fight against impunity for atrocity crimes.” “The Government remains resolute in effecting its principal responsibility to ensure the long-term safety of the nation in order to promote inclusive national development and secure a decent and dignified life for all,” the letter further read. The letter begins the one-year pro-

cess for the Philippines’ departure from the international court, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). Earlier this week, Duterte announced the country’s withdrawal from the treaty “effective immediately.” Duterte cited the alleged “concerted effort” between the ICC special prosecutor and United Nations (UN) special rapporteurs to portray him as a “ruthless and heartless violator

Trump amid his first visit to the state as president

SINCE President Donald Trump took office, immigrant advocates have not been shy about voicing their disapproval of arguably the most controversial Commander-in-Chief. California, in particular, has been one of the most intransigent states when it comes to the president’s proposed immigration policies, which include scraping family reunification, terminating the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and, of course, his long-desired massive United States-Mexico border wall. CHIEF Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno destroyed herself and betrayed public trust by lying about her indefinite leave, former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said on Thursday, March 15. Enrile, in a Youtube video, also noted that the bickering between Sereno and the other Supreme Court justices brought unprecedented chaos to the high tribunal. “Here is a case where a person who became chief justice is the subject of a complaint by a big number of members of the court. Imagine, the chief justice belying her own Supreme Court about the nature of the leave that was granted to her? She said it was a voluntary leave for wellness, but the Supreme Court—her own Supreme Court—tells the public that it is not for well-

S. VALENTE ManilaTimes.net

MALACAÑANG on Friday, March 16 hinted at a revamp in the Cabinet of President Rodrigo Duterte, saying the Chief Executive was “unhappy” with the performance of some members of his official family. In a television interview, Palace spokesman Harry Roque Jr. said Duterte revealed the plan to several journalists in a recent interview

at the Palace. “The president spoke to about a dozen journalists who had the chance to interview him in Malacañang. He really told them that he was not happy with the performance of some secretaries, and that there will be changes in the Cabinet,” Roque said in Filipino over GMA Network’s “Unang Hirit” morning show. Roque, however, declined to identify who these officials were.

Poe asks Facebook to have main office in PH by DANA

SIOSON AJPress

SENATOR Grace Poe on Thursday, March 15, called on Facebook to have a main office or a company representative in the Philippines. This way, Poe said concerns over abusive content and requests for support in improving content management could be addressed in a faster and easier manner. “You should have a main office here in the Philippines. We are sick and tired of having to call you in Singapore to come here,” remarked Poe, who is also the chair of the Senate Committee on Public Information and Mass Media. The senator issued the call dur-

ing the third and last Senate hearing on the proliferation of the socalled fake news, after Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar cited the agency’s struggles in curbing disinformation. “We appreciate your help and cooperation. But you should have a FB office here especially with the number of Filipinos that patronize Facebook,” she added. During the hearing, Andanar recounted Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Director-General Harold Clavite’s “very sad” experience with Facebook. “At the height of the Marawi siege, there was a video that went
