U.s. consumers lost $12.5 billion to scammers in 2024, according to new data from the federal trade Commission. the figure marks a 25% increase year-onyear, even as the total number of people who reported being scammed remained steady. ftC officials say the increase demonstrates the continued proliferation of scammers who are evolving their techniques.
“this trend is troubling because we can see that people are losing more money to scammers than in previous years,” says rosario mendez, assistant director with the ftC’s Division of Consumer and Business education. “People are in a lot of places at once, from email to social media to text and in-person. All those things are opportunities for scammers to get you, because they want to go where you are.” mendez spoke in an interview with ems

mANILA — Vice President sara Duterte believes she could be the next person the International Criminal Court (ICC) will arrest after her father, former President rodrigo Duterte, was taken into custody for crimes against humanity over the war on drugs. my mother warned me, told me to be careful because I might be the next target of the ICC,” Duterte told reporters at Villamor Air Base on tuesday night, march 11. If convicted, Duterte could be given a life imprisonment sentence.
As reported in the Asian Journal, Duterte was arrested on tuesday, march 11 for “crimes against humanity” regarding the former president’s role in the extrajudicial anti-drug killings.
In a video posted on facebook, former Philippine President rodrigo Duterte appeared to take accountability for the deadly “war on drugs” as he prepares to face the International Criminal Court (ICC) at the hague.
"Whatever happened in the past, I will be the front of our law enforcement and the military. I said this already, that I will protect you, and I will be responsible for everything," Duterte said. his remarks were his first since being put on a plane to the hague.
over the last few days, the Philippine government, led by President Bongbong marcos, confirmed that “Interpol asked us to [arrest Duterte] and we have commitments.”
“We followed every single necessary procedure…We followed the legal procedure that was necessary,” marcos said at a press conference on tuesday evening.
“this is what the international community expects of us as the leader of a democratic country that is part of the community of nations,” marcos said, affirming that Duterte’s arrest did not violate the Philippines’ sovereignty. n
What lies ahead for Duterte at ICC?

mANILA — two days after he was placed under custody, former President rodrigo Duterte was scheduled to appear for the first time on friday, march 14 before judges of the International Criminal Court (ICC). the ICC Pre-trial Chamber I, which issued the arrest warrant against Duterte, scheduled his first appearance at 2 p.m. in the hague (9 p.m. in manila). this first event is not yet the pre-trial phase and is mainly procedural.
“During the initial appearance hearing, the judges will verify the identity of the suspect and the language in which he is able to follow the proceedings. he will be informed of the charges against him and of his rights under the ICC rome statute,” the ICC said.
the public hearing will be broadcast with a 30-minute delay in accordance with ICC regulations to protect any potential sensitive information.
Because the number of visitors that can be accommodated in the public gallery is limited, members of the diplomatic corps and civil society can request attendance via the court’s email, with requests granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Journalists wishing to cover the hearing can also request accreditation via email.
According to the ICC website, three pre-trial judges will confirm the suspect’s identity and ensure the suspect understands the charges.
After hearing the prosecution, the defense and the legal representative of victims, the judges decide (usually within 60 days) if there is enough evidence for the case to go to trial.
Duterte is facing charges as an “indirect co-conspirator” for alleged crimes against humanity in relation to his administration’s war against illegal drugs and the killings committed by the so-called Davao Death squad. on march 7, the Pre-trial Chamber I – composed of Judges Iulia Antoanella motoc, reine Adélaïde sophie Alapini-Gansou and maría del socorro flores Liera – granted the request of the ICC prosecutor to issue a warrant for Duterte’s arrest.

In a joint press conference on march 6, roque, alongside tourism secretary Christina Garcia frasco and first Lady Liza Araneta-marcos, announced the program, seen

In a separate interview on thursday, march 13, roque said the DtI alone has a budget of P300 million to give out as incentives for the local film industry. she said that they intend to double the budget this year and partner with the private sector to raise funding.
In November last year, the fDCP signed a partnership with global screen sector consultancy olsberg sPI to develop a strategic roadmap for the future of the local film industry. the fDCP said the road map would underpin its main
priorities of strengthening the country’s domestic film industry and expanding the potential to attract more international productions.
“Currently, both the Philippine and international screen sectors face challenges such as highly competitive funding opportunities, rising production costs and the increasing need to constantly evolve interdisciplinary technical and creative skill sets,” it added.
“recognizing the necessity to address these challenges and adapt to the rapidly evolving global screen sector, the road map will provide actionable recommendations to create a sustainable, inclusive, and competitive Philippine film industry,” it said. n

US Congress considers $800 billion Medicaid cut, putting healthcare in jeopardy for millions of working families
“These are the worst cuts to Medicaid in the history of the program.” - Stan Dorn, director of the Health Policy Project at UnidosUS.
11 civil rights organizations march 13 jointly released a report on the impact of a proposed $800 billion cut to medicaid, which would put at risk health care coverage for 70 million Americans. the house passed its budget proposal feb. 25, calling for an overall $2 trillion in spending cuts. the proposal also allows for $4.5 trillion in spending for tax cuts — which advocates say benefit only the very wealthy — and also raises the debt ceiling by $4.5 trillion. the senate is expected to put through its proposal in April. After that, both the house and senate will go through a budget reconciliation process to agree on proposed cuts and spending. the proposed cuts would disproportionately impact Latino and Black families, noted the report. more than 20 million Latinos, 13 million Black people, and 3.5 million Asian Americans rely on medicaid. 31 million children are also covered by medicaid, through the Children’s health Insurance Program. more than half of Latino kids are covered by the program, and 60% of Black children are also enrolled. 60% of Native American children are enrolled in ChIP, and almost half of
Native hawaiian/Pacific Islander children are also enrolled in the program. In California, medicaid is known as mediCal, and covers all state residents, including undocumented people. Nationwide, 1 out of 5 people, and 1 out of every 3 children are covered by medicaid. 62% of adults on medicaid are working full or part-time jobs, according to data from the California health Care foundation. on average, about 68% of state spending on medicaid comes from the federal government, reports Kff Feed the rich, starve the poor “these are the worst cuts to medicaid in the history of the program,” said stan Dorn, director of the health Policy Project at UnidosUs. “these huge budget cuts pay for tax breaks that primarily benefit the wealthy. We’re cutting health care services and food for working class people so that billionaires can buy more yachts and jewelry,” he said in an interview with ethnic media services.
“We know that when you take health care away from children, the effects last a lifetime. health problems are more likely in adulthood. People are less able to support themselves, more likely to need to turn to public assistance,” said Dorn.
researchers tell us that every dollar invested in children’s health results in a $4 savings to taxpayers down the line. so even if you care nothing about human beings and care only about gold dollars and cents, you don’t want to make these cuts,” he stated.
Dorn noted that $230 billion in cuts are also being proposed for the supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — sNAP — reducing food benefits for almost 42 million people.
‘Kicking elderly out of nursing homes’
“Budgets are a reflection of our values,” said rep. Grace meng, chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus — CAPAC — at a press conference march 13 morning. “republicans have said with their budget proposal that they prioritize billionaires over the working class. It is beyond shameful,” said the congresswoman from New York, noting that millions of people will lose healthcare coverage. Darren soto, D-florida and chair of the Congressional hispanic Caucus, noted that millions of older adults will lose financial support to be able to live in nursing homes. Derrick Johnson, president and Ceo of the NAACP, echoed soto’s remarks. “our vulnerable elderly people should not be kicked out of nursing homes so that billionaires get bigger tax breaks,” he stated.
People who lose their medicaid coverage will not be able to easily transition to coverage under the Affordable Care Act, also known as obamacare, noted Anthony Wright, executive director of families UsA. ACA coverage is expensive — about $10-$12,000 annually for a family. “these are low-income, working families. the idea that they can afford private health coverage is not feasible,” he said.

American sentenced to 30 years in prison for exploiting Filipino children
by Mary villegas Inquirer.net
A 46-year-old man from Walton, Kentucky, was sentenced on friday, march 7, to 30 years in prison for producing child sexual abuse material (CsAm) in the Philippines, according to the U.s. Department of Justice. Court documents show that robert maxwell Werner paid a filipino individual between february and November 2021 to recruit minors for the production of sexually explicit material. residing in the Philippines at that time, Werner arranged five in-person meetings with the victims at hotels and rental properties, where he allegedly “livestreamed and recorded sexual acts,” according to a press release from the DoJ.
“the individual would sexually abuse these minors and force the minors to engage in sexual acts together for foreign customers like Werner,” the DoJ said.
In return, Werner provided money, food, clothing and basic needs to the filipino minors, many of whom were in severe poverty.
sexual exploitation of filipino children
As part of his plea deal, Werner admitted to committing sexually explicit acts with at least one minor to produce the material between July and November 2021.
“Werner further admitted to transporting that sexually explicit material into the United states,” the DoJ said.
“Additionally, once he returned to the United states, Werner continued to solicit CsAm from the individual for at least another month.” the fBI’s Child exploitation operational Unit conducted the investigation with help from the Philippine National Bureau of Investigation and the DoJ’s office of International Affairs. Acting U.s. Attorney Paul mcCaffrey, supervisory official matthew r. Galeotti and fBI Assistant Director Chad Yarbrough announced Werner’s sentencing. the sentencing reflects the U.s. government’s strong commitment to dismantling child exploitation networks worldwide, the DoJ said. businesses. “the fastest growing segment of entrepreneurs in our country are people of color … with an absolutely historic number of veterans as well.” the executive orders accompany a January 27 funding freeze of hundreds of billions of dollars for federal programs, and february federal layoffs under the elon musk-led Department of Governmental efficiency including 20% of sBA staff, approximately 720 employees.
“We all want to see better efficiency, but this approach of laying off 20% of the workforce — many of whom are people providing customer service — without even stepping a foot in these agencies, is just inefficient,” said syed. “Now you have even longer wait times to get help. It would affect every single American who wants to start or grow a business.”
Last thursday, march 13, sBA Administrator Kelly Koeffler also announced that the agency would close offices in six major cities — including Chicago, Denver and New orleans — due to sanctuary city laws. that doesn’t help us serve this unmet need of a rising class of entrepreneurs of color,” said sayed. “American economic competitiveness in the world is directly tied to immigrants pursuing their dreams.”
In 2024, 46% of fortune 500 companies, or 230 companies, were founded by immigrants or their children.
“We have to uphold our country’s laws, but we’re not talking about reforming proper legal pathways for people to become productive citizens,” added sayed. “All we’re
doing is choking a very important source of labor in this country by demonizing immigrants.” these sBA rollbacks — alongside a reduction of the agency’s diversity funding quota from 15% to 5% across contracts — mean steeper hurdles for small businesses trying to get sBA approval, which is crucial to bidding on federal contracts.
“I’m concerned that the very programs we were bidding on will be eliminated now,” said elizabeth Barrutia, president and Ceo Barú, a multicultural marketing agency she founded in Los Angeles 17 years ago.
“there’s a trickle-down effect into the whole media landscape I work with,” she continued.
“When minority outlets — print, broadcast, television — are getting less dollars to market government programs like health, education or financial aid services … there will be long-term disproportionate outcomes for health equity, educational attainment and financial attainment.
“Innovation will falter, and innovation is what generates more dollars,” Barrutia added. “Years ago, they would say multicultural marketing is good for business. Now I’m wondering whether they understood it was a business imperative to begin with.”

Huge spike in consumer fraud losses...
from her office in Washington DC.
of the 2.6 million reports submitted to the ftC in 2024, 38% reported losing money, up from 27% in 2023.
Imposter scams—where criminals pose as representatives of official agencies—continued to top the list in terms of type of scams out there, with $2.95 billion in reported losses.
But investment scams cost consumers $5.7 billion last year, ftC data show, more than any other category. In 2023, that number was $1 billion.
the difference is staggering,” says mendez, describing how scammers promise hefty returns on investments in cryptocurrency, for example. “they guarantee your investment will make a lot of money, that it is a unique opportunity.” she adds, “of course, the reality is that people lose everything.”
Consumers reported that emails, phone calls and texts remained the most common ways they were reached by scammers, and that more money was lost through bank transfers and cryptocurrency transactions than all other payment methods combined.
Young people ages 20 to 29 lost money more often, though people 70 years and older lost more money overall than any other age group.
“scammers’ tactics are constantly evolving,” Christopher mufarrige, director of the ftC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, said in a statement. “the ftC is monitoring those trends closely and working hard to protect the American people from fraud.”
the Korea Daily recently reported on an intricate imposter scam targeting Korean Americans.
According to the report, a Korean woman in New York received a phone call from someone claiming to be with the south Korean embassy in New York. the caller instructed her to join a video conference, which showed a man dressed as a south Korean police officer in what appeared to be a police office in south Korea.
the woman grew suspicious after the caller demanded her personal information and eventually reported the scam to authorities.
“I have heard of similar stories of scammers claiming to be staff from UsCIs or even
administrative judges from Immigration enforcement and conducting supposedly an administrative proceeding on WhatsApp,” said mendez, referring to the federal agency that manages citizenship and naturalization.
“the scam is so elaborate, but people fall for it because it looks so real,” she added. the ftC released an alert in December warning consumers about this specific scheme, noting it typically starts with a lawyer promising a green card, work permits, or citizenship, often via social media posts in multiple languages. Potential victims hit the like button or leave a comment and are later contacted and solicited for payments via platforms including Western Union or Zelle. the number one rule of thumb, mendez says, for avoiding scams is to know that the government or any official agency will “never ask you to pay money to solve a problem… much less through wire transfers, or gift cards, or cryptocurrencies. that’s how you know this is a scam.” of the total losses last year, the ftC was able to secure $319 million in refunds to consumers,
including $15.5 million for the nearly 43,000 victims of a deceptive job placement scam that targeted service members and their spouses.
the ftC’s latest report draws from the agency’s Consumer sentinel Network, a database that compiles reports from consumers, as well as an array of local, state and federal agencies, including AArP and the Better Business Bureau. the reports offer an important snapshot of trends and patterns that agencies like the ftC and others can use to better protect consumers and prosecute criminals.
officials with the ftC stress these reports serve an essential function, allowing law enforcement to pursue cases while giving the ftC the information it needs to keep the public informed. reports can be submitted anonymously in english and spanish.
“this is something we can fight through information,” says mendez, “because we know from experience, and the data bears this out, that when people know about a scam, they are more likely to spot it and avoid it.” (Peter Schurmann/Ethnic Media Services)

— After successfully exiting the financial Action task force gray list, the Philippines is ramping up efforts to ensure it does not face another compliance setback in the next fAtf evaluation scheduled in 2027, the Bangko sentral ng Pilipinas (BsP) said. speaking at the tuesday Club, BsP Governor eli remolona Jr. said that while the country’s delisting from the fAtf gray list last month marked a significant milestone, the work is far from over.
“Now, just because we are off the gray list does not mean that we are done. We have to make sure we do not get back into the gray list,” he said.
“In the past, we went in, we went out. this time, we are determined to stay out of the gray list,” the BsP chief said.
According to remolona, it is important to strengthen the country’s national risk assessment and evaluate vulnerabilities across the economy that could lead to money laundering and terrorism financing risks.
the next fAtf mutual evaluation is scheduled for 2027. the Philippine government aims
to pass it without returning to the gray list, remolona said.
“I hope we can stay out of the gray list. We are determined to stay out of the gray list,” he added. the Paris-based global dirty money watchdog placed the Philippines on the gray list in 2021. however, remolona noted that efforts to strengthen antimoney laundering measures date back to 2016, following the $81-million Bangladesh Bank heist that exposed loopholes in the Philippines’ financial system. In response, the fAtf issued 18 action items that the Philippines needed to address to meet global standards. these included stricter oversight of money service businesses, casino junkets, and designated non-financial businesses such as law firms and accountants. the fAtf also required proof of high-level commitment to reforms. remolona cited the government’s crackdown on Philippine offshore gaming operators as a key demonstration of this commitment, even though it was not on the fAtf’s original list of required actions. By october 2024, the fAtf determined that the Philippines had met all the action items. remolona earlier told The
STAr that a validation team visited the country in January. the final decision was made during the fAtf Plenary in Paris in february, wherein the Philippines’ removal from the gray list was unanimously approved.
the good news from last month was not the end of a fouryear ordeal; it was actually the end of a nine-year ordeal if you count from 2016,” remolona said.
the fAtf even recognized the Philippines’ reforms and positioned the country as a regional leader in tackling money laundering and terrorism financing. the Philippines has been asked to provide evaluators for other gray-listed nations in Asia.
the BsP chief said the country’s exit is expected to renew investor confidence and restore correspondent banking relationships, particularly benefiting overseas filipino workers by making remittances and bank transactions smoother.
remolona also noted that the peso’s movement before and after the delisting reflected anticipation of increased foreign investments.
“It makes it easier for foreign banks to deal with our banks,” he said. n

mANILA — At least 45 percent of the country’s electorate are not in favor of the filing of an impeachment case against Vice President sara Duterte, Pulse Asia’s latest poll released on friday, march 14 showed.
In Pulse Asia research’s february 2025 Pulso ng Bayan pre-electoral survey, the polling body asked respondents whether they agreed or disagreed with the filing of an impeachment case against Duterte.
forty-five percent of respondents answered that they disagree with the house of representatives’ move, while the rest of filipino registered voters, comprising 26 percent of the respondents, expressed ambivalence on the matter.
only 7 percent of them could not state an opinion about the matter due to a lack of knowledge.
A quick look at the survey would show that “big pluralities to an overwhelming majority” in the Visayas (46 percent) and mindanao (88 percent) disagree with what the house of representatives did.
In the same poll, Pulse likewise asked respondents whether or not they believe that the senate will be fair as a court once it begins the trial.
thirty-five percent of filipino registered voters, or less than the majority of respondents, believe that the senate will not be fair when it hears the impeachment case.
“thirty-three percent are ambivalent on the matter [while] about a fifth of the electorate [or] 21 percent believes that the senate will be fair when it convenes as an impeachment court for the purpose of hearing the vice president’s impeachment case,” said Pulse.
“As may be expected, most registered voters in mindanao (66 percent) believe the senate will not be fair as an impeachment court. A big plurality of registered voters in metro manila (40 percent)
believe otherwise, while indecision is the plurality sentiment in the rest of Luzon,” it added. Pulse said “practically all” registered voters in the country — or at least 92 percent — have heard, read or watched something about the impeachment of the vice president by the lower chamber. the lower chamber, in a historic move on february 5, impeached Duterte, garnering over 200 signatures from lawmakers.
on the same day, the articles of impeachment were transmitted to the senate, but the upper chamber adjourned its session without tackling the document. to date, the document remains pending before the upper chamber, with senate President Chiz escudero saying that the actual trial would only start after President

Day of reckoning comes for Duterte
Finally, the much-awaited day of reckoning has come, as former President Rodrigo Duterte was escorted by police and an international Criminal Police Organization (interpol) representative upon his arrival from Hong Kong on Tuesday, March 11, and marched off to police custody at the Villamor air Base.
Duterte is facing investigation for crimes against humanity before the International Criminal Court (ICC), for the thousands of extrajudicial killings (eJKs) committed during his brutal war on drugs. While the current administration has repeatedly declared noncooperation with the ICC, saying it no longer has jurisdiction over the country after Duterte’s withdrawal of Philippine membership in 2019, marcos administration officials lately said they will work with the Interpol to maintain reciprocal relations on law enforcement. the ICC, which retains jurisdiction over crimes committed during a country’s period of membership, coursed the warrant through Interpol.
the sight of the self-confessed killer chewing gum to appear nonchalant while being flanked by dozens of arresting officers — away from his rabid supporters and enablers — is a satisfying scene that’s a long time coming. It is overdue retribution for the summary killings of at least 6,000 drug suspects (closer to 20,000, according to rights groups) that started even when Duterte was Davao mayor in 2011 all the way to his six years in malacañang.
Lack of remorse
In fact, then human rights commissioner Leila de Lima’s investigation of such killings in Davao led to the Duterte administration’s fabricated drugrelated charges against the former senator and her almost seven years’ incarceration until her acquittal in 2024. today, Duterte is being made to answer — not to me, but to the victims, to their families, to a world that refuses to forget. this is not about vengeance. this is about justice finally taking its course,” De Lima said.
A statement from malacañang meanwhile stressed how due process — routinely denied eJK victims — was strictly observed in the Duterte arrest, with the Prosecutor General serving the ICC notification for the arrest warrant, government doctors examining Duterte before his custody, and the police wearing body cameras to ensure the integrity of the process. the methodical manner by which authorities implemented the arrest deserves praise after Duterte’s departure for hong Kong earlier raised fears of a hasty escape.
Duterte’s arrest, a pivotal point to demonstrate accountability and rule of law is a slap in the face of the former president’s arrogant claims to absolute power during his term and lack of remorse for the killings, as seen by his defiant and unrepentant stance during the house quad committee hearings on the drug war.
Reign of terror
As he brazenly declared during the hearing:
“Do not question my policies, because I offer no apologies, no excuses. I did what I had to do, and whether you believe it or not, I did it for my country.” the sense of impunity was evident as well when he said that he had ordered police to encourage criminals to fight back and resist arrest — so their killing could be justified as self-defense.
As noted by rights lawyer Chel Diokno, “for decades, Duterte thought himself untouchable— above the law, beyond accountability. But history catches up with even the most ruthless despots. his reign of terror must meet its inevitable end: his conviction.”
What happens next after the arrest remains to be seen, and the battle is far from over. the
government must let the wheels of justice turn smoothly and run unimpeded. Duterte must be turned over to ICC custodial facilities posthaste before his allies use his arrest to foment political instability and drum up sympathy votes for his cohorts in the coming elections. the ICC, for its part, must issue similar arrest warrants for his coaccused before they flee the country to evade the law.
Watershed moment
While Duterte and his ilk are given their day in court, witnesses, including the families of eJK victims and their counsel, must prepare assiduously to pin down the authors and implementers of the bloody anti-narcotics campaign. they must secure from house records as well the incriminating testimonies of former drug operatives who spoke
of drug reward money, the killings of jailed drug lords, and the widespread complicity to cover up other crimes related to eJK. having forfeited the opportunity to put Duterte on trial in Philippine courts, the government must seize this watershed moment to change the trajectory of the country’s politics. It’s a historic, if shameful moment — the first Philippine president to face arrest and investigation by the international court for horrific crimes against the filipino people. Adherence to the rule of law shores up our reputation in the international community and deters other leaders from flagrantly abusing their power. for too long, Duterte has sown fear and impunity as the “Punisher.” Let him taste justice behind bars in the hague. (inquirer.net)
IN a stunning turn of events, former President rodrigo Duterte was arrested by the Philippine National Police last tuesday, march 11. mr. Duterte was detained pursuant to a warrant of arrest issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC). he is accused of committing crimes against humanity from 2011 when he was Davao City mayor and up to 2019 when he was our country’s president.
the inclusion of the period when Duterte was Davao City mayor/vice mayor from 2011 to 2016 means that the statements and evidence submitted by selfconfessed Davao Death squad (DDs) assassins (edgar matobato and Arturo Lascañas) have been given great credence and that they will become star witnesses
during the trial. Whoever else was named as a central figure in the Davao City extrajudicial killings must be having sleepless nights. the warrant of arrest accuses Duterte of having committed the crimes “together with his coperpetrators.” the warrant also describes the former president as “responsible for the crime … as an indirect co-perpetrator.” the multiple use of the word co-perpetrator(s) may be a clear hint that there are other warrants of arrest—already issued or to be issued—against other coperpetrators of mr. Duterte. Who else will be charged as coperpetrators? everyone who had a hand in the tens of thousands of killings that happened all over the country during the Duterte administration must also be having sleepless nights. the warrant also discloses that the ICC prosecutor initially sought to charge mr. Duterte
with three types of crimes against humanity, namely, 1. murder, 2. torture, and 3. rape. however, the pretrial chamber only sustained the charge of murder. It reasoned out that, while there’s enough evidence showing the commission of torture and rape, there was insufficient evidence to connect torture and rape as part of the “widespread and systematic attack against the civilian population” and that they were committed “pursuant to state policy.” the warrant further reveals that the pretrial chamber was convinced that the crimes against humanity were committed by Duterte based on the evidence submitted related to the killing of 19 alleged “drug pushers and thieves” in Davao City and 24 drug pushers, drug users, and thieves “at various locations in the Philippines.” out of the almost 30,000 killings that happened in the country, 43 murders will
be the representative criminal incidents that will be presented by the ICC Prosecutor to prove that the killings were widespread and systematic. the warrant further bares that the pretrial chamber did not rely merely on the testimonies of witnesses but included as evidence of mr. Duterte’s involvement in the crimes the following: his design, dissemination, and endorsement of the “Double Barrel” project; his official appointment of key personnel to positions that were crucial in executing the crimes; his offer of financial incentives, promotions, the promise of immunity, and acts to shield from investigation and prosecution the police officers and hit men who killed suspects; his public statements authorizing, condoning, and promoting killings, and dehumanizing alleged criminals; and publicly naming suspects some of whom
were subsequently killed in police operations, among others.
What Duterte’s warrant of arrest reveals Wages of breaking up
Within the day that he was arrested, mr. Duterte was swiftly made to board a chartered flight, and as of this writing, was already on its way to the hague. one cannot help but notice that the marcos administration may have taken a page from the Cory Aquino administration’s similarly swift action in dispatching ferdinand marcos sr. when he was ousted from malacañan Palace in 1986. Both swift actions were, undoubtedly, meant to prevent political turmoil.
After mr. Duterte is handed over to the international court, the ICC pretrial chamber will hold confirmation of charges proceedings. this is the procedure wherein the international court will either validate the charges against mr. Duterte or dismiss the case against him and order his release.
If the pretrial chamber confirms
the charges, the case will go to a three-person trial chamber that will conduct trial. While at the hague, mr. Duterte will be staying at the ICC detention center on the outskirts of the hague, where five African leaders charged with ICC crimes are currently detained. Duterte is the third Asian to be charged before the ICC after the leaders of Israel and myanmar. Duterte is the first to be arrested, however. the victims’ families are ardently praying and hoping that Duterte will also be the first to be convicted and sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison in vindication of the loved ones they have tragically lost. If sara Duterte had not picked a fight with the marcos-Aranetaromualdez clan and the Uniteam hadn’t broken up, would her father be in the hague right now, waiting to be tried by the “white people” in the International Criminal Court?
this question must have crossed the mind of some folks in the VP’s camp after marcos 2.0 readily handed over rodrigo Duterte to the Interpol for turnover to the ICC, which issued the longanticipated arrest warrant for the former Philippine president in the wee hours of march 11. sen. Bong Go, his voice breaking, announced that his Tatay Digong had indeed been flown out of the country at past 11 p.m. on march 11. the DDs – not the Davao death squad, but Duterte’s diehard supporters – are accusing the marcos administration of “state kidnapping,” political persecution
and surrender of national sovereignty to a foreign court. their laments are not entirely baseless. If we had a fully functioning legal system, we wouldn’t need the ICC to try a filipino for an offense that is in our statute books. And as we all know, the woes of the Dutertes started only after the ugly breakup of the Uniteam, with VP sara publicly unfriending Bongbong marcos. * * * since the elder ferdinand marcos sent his opponents to prison en masse (with Ninoy Aquino to the grave), we’ve seen a cycle of retributions in nearly all post-eDsA administrations except that of fidel ramos. steady eddie” took the opposite tack and explored or made peace with everyone in the name of team Philippines. the marcoses were sent into exile by the revolutionary government of Corazon Aquino, with vast assets believed to be ill-gotten seized or sequestered. transitional justice in this case is an unfinished business. ramos successor Joseph
estrada’s presidency, although short-lived, was long enough to neutralize a publicist linked to fVr, Bubby Dacer, who was allegedly suspected by erap’s camp to be preparing to drop a bombshell against him. Poor Dacer’s burnt remains at least were found, but justice for him and his slain driver emmanuel Corbito has not been fully attained.
erap’s hand was also widely suspected in the unresolved disappearance of casino employee edgar Bentain, who was believed to have leaked a video during estrada’s campaign for the presidency, showing him gambling with Atong Ang in a casino VIP pit. the video caused hardly a ripple in erap’s popularity at the time; he won by a landslide. What caused his downfall were not those cases, but the corruption and gambling payola scandal that led to his impeachment and ouster through people power 2, with his constitutional successor Gloria macapagal-Arroyo replacing him.
erap spent a few years under “resthouse arrest,” playing with
his pet mallard ducks while on trial for plunder together with his son Jinggoy. Ironically, erap’s ordeal ended after his conviction, with GmA granting him absolute pardon and ordering his release before he could ever see the inside of a prison cell.
GmA herself was hounded by a string of corruption scandals almost from Day one of her presidency. In 2004, amid the “hello Garci” vote rigging scandal, Cory Aquino led calls for GmA’s resignation.
In retaliation, GmA ended the exemption of the Aquinoowned hacienda Luisita from agrarian reform coverage – a loophole inserted in the law by the landowners in Congress –and commuted the sentence of all the soldiers convicted of assassinating Ninoy Aquino and rolando Galman.
When Cory’s son Noynoy became president, GmA spent four years under “hospital arrest” for corruption, appearing periodically in public with a neck brace and in a wheelchair.

Depending on the way the
political winds blow in 2028, the nation might yet see justice in the ill-gotten wealth cases against the marcos estate – if there is any case left after the ongoing mass dismissal of the charges by justices angling for a promotion. the marcoses might finally be compelled to pay the estimated P2 billion in estate taxes when BBm was the estate administrator.
And we might see someone –anyone – getting punished for the institutionalized plunder of the national budget.
At this point, only the Duterte camp has the kind of grudge that could prompt such retaliatory moves against the marcoses after noon of June 30, 2028. the next change of leadership is just three years away. that’s enough time to permanently bar inday sara from ever holding public office, either through conviction by an impeachment court, or fast-tracked final conviction by the judicial courts.
If she is eliminated, the person emerging (based on the latest surveys) is her father’s anakanakan, Bong Go.
In the wake of the latest Pulse
Asia survey on senate bets, and Go’s starring role in the DDs welcoming contingent for Duterte at the NAIA last tuesday, Go might soon be parted from his virtual ownership of the malasakit centers, which are under the AICs or Assistance for Individuals in Crisis situations. his flood of campaign posters nationwide may soon disappear except in Duterte bailiwicks. he might find the government subjecting his family’s considerable assets to minute scrutiny. And Go himself might end up with an ICC arrest warrant. If the Duterte camp returns to power, the remains of the dictator could actually be dug up –perhaps not tossed into the West Philippine sea, as VP sara had threatened, but at least relocated out of the cemetery for heroes.

— With or without the falling out between President marcos and Vice President sara Duterte, the administration will do the same and assist the Interpol in arresting former President rodrigo Duterte, who is facing charges for “crimes against humanity,” malacañang said on friday, march 14.
the 79-year-old Duterte, the vice president’s father, was arrested for crimes against humanity upon his arrival in manila from hong Kong on tuesday, march 11, and was flown on the same day to the hague in the Netherlands, home of the International Criminal Court (ICC). the Philippine government enforced an ICC arrest warrant coursed through the Interpol. At a late-night press conference on tuesday, marcos said the government merely fulfilled its responsibilities and
commitments to the international community in cooperating with the Interpol regarding the arrest of Duterte.
In an interview at malacañang, Presidential Communications office Undersecretary Claire Castro maintained the administration merely followed the law in surrendering Duterte to the ICC. of course, we will just abide by the law. that’s it. Whatever the agreement with the Interpol, whoever the person involved, whether or not there is Uniteam, it will be the same,” Castro said in filipino.
“We can’t have special treatment just because of friendship,” said Castro, referring to the Uniteam tandem formed between marcos and Duterte and won them landslide victories in the 2022 national elections.
some analysts were saying the arrest of the former president would not have happened had there not been a rift between the country’s two top leaders.
Castro earlier said it was the prerogative of marcos to comply with the Interpol’s request for assistance.
“this is not just surrendering a filipino citizen, it is surrendering a filipino citizen who is accused of crimes against humanity, specifically murder, so it would be a different story. so, we have to comply with the law and also give justice either to the victims or the accused,” she said at a press briefing on Wednesday, march 12.
Castro added the chartering of a plane to bring former President Duterte to the ICC was part of the marcos government’s assistance to the Interpol.
“As we said, if they (Interpol) ask for assistance, we should give complete support, because without providing the airplane to bring the former president to the ICC, it would be like an incomplete response to our commitment to Interpol,” Castro said. (With reports from Jose rodel clapano)
DOT seeks tighter security measures in tourist destinations
mANILA – the Department of tourism (Dot) has requested the Department of the Interior and Local Government to implement “immediate and concrete measures to enhance security in key tourist destinations” following the death of a female slovak tourist in Boracay Island.
“As we await the official findings from the ongoing investigation, the Dot reaffirms its dedication to preserving Boracay’s reputation as a premier tourist destination,” the Dot said in a statement friday, march 14.
“the safety and well-being of all travelers remain our top priority, and we will take every necessary step to ensure this environment is maintained.”
Police discovered the decomposing body of 23-yearold michaela mickova, sans lower garments, in an abandoned chapel in Boracay on Wednesday, march 12.
“the Department of tourism categorically condemns, in the strongest possible terms, any act of violence or criminality that threatens the safety and security of tourists in the Philippines,” it said. “our hearts go out to the
family and loved ones affected by this tragic event.” the agency reiterated that such actions are “intolerable and have no place in our country.”
“As we await the official findings from the ongoing investigation, the Dot reaffirms its dedication to preserving Boracay’s reputation as a premier tourist destination,” it said. “the safety and well-being of all travelers remain our top priority, and we will take every necessary step to ensure this environment is maintained.” (PNA)

mANILA — the government will not stop the public, especially supporters of former President rodrigo Duterte, from voicing their sentiments following his arrest for “crimes against humanity” for the deaths of thousands in implementing his war on drugs, malacañang said on friday, march 14.
Palace press officer Claire Castro said the administration respects people’s right to freedom of expression.
those who sympathize with former President Duterte, it’s their right (to express their sentiments). We will not prevent that, it’s their right to be sad and to sympathize with former President Duterte,” Castro said at a Palace briefing.
If things get out of hand, there are measures to address such situations, she said. But she appealed to the public to not forget the root of the issue.
“As we have said, the people should open their eyes and see the truth,” Castro said.
“Nothing has been seen yet that could alarm the administration,” Castro said when asked about the government’s plan to prevent what Du terte’s supporters call “full-blown” people power.

Jacob Batalon reflects on ‘Novocaine,’ Filipino roots, and his recent engagement
by MoMar G. Visaya AJPress
FILIPINO American actor
Jacob Batalon is stepping into a new chapter of his life, both personally and professionally.
The 27-year-old actor, best known for his breakout role as Ned Leeds in the MCU’s Spider-Man films, announced his engagement to his longtime girlfriend last week via Instagram, sharing the joyous milestone with his fans.
Alongside this personal development, Batalon is also gearing up for the release of his latest film, Novocaine, where he stars alongside Jack Quaid. The film, set for a global release on March 14, promises to showcase another facet of Batalon’s ever-expanding range as an actor.
Reflecting on his engagement, Batalon expressed his excitement about this new phase in his life.
“We’re planning on enjoying our engagement,” he told the Asian Journal, hinting that he and his fiancée Veronica Leahov are taking their time to savor the moment before diving into wedding planning. While he remains relatively private about his relationship, his enthusiasm was evident as he discussed his future with his partner.
On the professional front, working on Novocaine proved to be a rewarding experience for Batalon. “Working with Jack Quaid and the rest of the cast was really fun. Everyone
was super nice and supportive, and they helped me a lot. It was just a fun time working in South Africa,” he told us. The film, which blends elements of action and psychological thrills, allowed Batalon to challenge himself in new ways.
He spent nearly two months filming on location, fully immersing himself in the role.
Batalon’s journey to Hollywood is one of perseverance and unexpected turns. Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Filipino parents, he never envisioned a career in acting as a child. Initially, his artistic inclinations leaned toward music—his mother would often have him sing karaoke at family gatherings, and he briefly studied music theory at Kapi‘olani Community College. However, it wasn’t until he attended the New York
Conservatory for Dramatic Arts that he found his true passion for acting. His very first audition, a self-taped submission for what was described as a supporting role in a Marvel movie, turned out to be the life-changing opportunity that landed him the role of Ned Leeds.
Since then, Batalon has carved out a space for himself in Hollywood, moving beyond his endearing sidekick role in Spider-Man to take on lead roles in diverse projects. In 2022, he made his debut as both the star and executive producer of Syfy’s Reginald the Vampire, a dramedy based on Johnny B. Truant’s Fat Vampire book series. Acting as an executive producer gave Batalon an entirely new perspective on the industry. “It was really enlightening.

The model-turned-actress underscored a virtue that she believes makes a difference in staying in the business of acting.
“Respect is a big virtue that you should have when you enter this business. It’s something that will, you know, give you a long life in this business if you respect yourself, your coworkers, everybody around you, and that boils down to the smallest player in the industry,” Angel emphasized.

Angel started out modeling when she was scouted by director Jeffrey Jeturian when she was 19. The 52-year-old eventually donned the dresses of famous designers, becoming their favorite muse, and then she ventured into acting.
Angel has not been absent from TV these days, with one project after another. She was part of the longest running TV show “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano,” and now she reunites with Coco Martin in “FPJ’s Batang Quiapo.”
Her staying power in the
fashion and entertainment scene is evident in her presence on TV, and Angel added that it is respect coupled with determination that has helped her keep in the right track.
“You have to be committed to what you do. You have to have the right reasons for doing it,” she advised.
Angel cautioned against those who believe in easy fame, arguing that it is not the only reason to enter showbiz.
Kasi kung para ka lang sumikat then maraming paraan. With the social media now, it’s so easy to be famous, but to be remembered and to be respected, takes a lot more effort,” Angel said.

On her Instagram account on Monday, March 10, Santos described her Best Actress plum as a “beautiful souvenir” from the film festival, as she shared a picture of herself while holding her trophy.
“Napakaganda ng souvenir na maiuuwi ko mula dito sa Porto, sa Fantasporto,” she said. “Ang lamig tapos ang bigat-bigat ng award. Iniisip ko gaano [kalaki] babayaran ko sa excess baggage ko pauwi pero masayang-masaya akong babayaran, maiuwi lang ‘to.”
(This is such a beautiful souvenir to bring home from Porto, at the Fantasporto Film Festival. It’s so cold and the award is so heavy. I’m thinking how much excess baggage I’ll shoulder going home. But I don’t mind paying for it as long as I can take it back with me.)
Santos also expressed her gratitude to Chito Roño, Chris Martinez, and Atty. Joji Alonso, who served as the director, writer, and producer of “Espantaho,” respectively, as well as her castmates and crew.
“Of course, congrats kay Direk Chito, Chris, Atty. Joji, and to all the cast and crew of ‘Espantaho.’ Siyempre, para sa atin ‘to. Hindi naman ako makakarating dito kung hindi kayo ang kasama ko. To God be the glory. Mabuhay
ang Pilipinas,” she said.
(Of course, congratulations to Direk Chito, Chris, Atty. Joji, and to all the cast and crew of “Espantaho.” Of course, this is for us. I wouldn’t be able to reach this stage without you. To God be the glory. Long live the Philippines.)
Sisterly friendship Following Santos’ win, Sharon Cuneta took to her Instagram page to congratulate her close friend for her recent milestone.
“Just a few days ago, my sister @officialjuday and I were texting while she was in Barcelona. Now she is in Porto, Portugal — and she just won Best Actress in the 45th Fantasporto Festival there for ‘Espantaho!!!’” she wrote.
“CONGRATS AGAIN SIS KO (my sister). More pride for the Philippines (and for your Ate who LOOOOVES YOU!!!)!!! See you soon! I love you very much,” she continued. The “Espantaho” star thanked Cuneta in the comments section, saying winning the award gave her a unique sense of fulfillment. Santos is the fourth Filipino to receive an acting plum from the Portugal-based film festival after Barbie Forteza, Ian Veneracion, and Cristine Reyes. Her performance in the Chito Roño-helmed horror film also earned her a Best Actress win at the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) last December.
Rachelle Ann Go continues to make
OUR international theater sensation Rachelle
Ann Go and her beautiful family recently visited the Philippines for seven weeks. Rachelle was a picture of a happy and contented woman when she appeared in an episode of “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda.” The first time I interviewed Rachelle was 20 years ago.
Rachelle continues to make Filipinos proud with her achievements on Broadway and in the West End. She enthralls audiences with her portrayal of a bargirl named Gigi Van Tranh in “Miss Saigon”; as Fantine, a prostitute suffering from tuberculosis, in “Les Misérables”; and as Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton, the wife of Alexander Hamilton, in the musical staging of “Hamilton.
Her rise to global stardom was not easy, especially during the first few years that she was in London. “I moved there without an agent, without any manager.
Dahil sa ‘Miss Saigon’ po iyon Pagdating ko doon kailangan ready ka, Tito Boy. I didn’t have any training in theater. Lahat sila trained. They did a lot of shows before they did ‘Miss Saigon.’ Ako, first time,” Rachelle shared. She also got homesick because she had no friends in London. She now has an agent, who was introduced to her by my good friend, the late direk Bobby Garcia. Rachelle and Lea Salonga are represented by the same agent.
Rachelle shared some pieces of advice for young people who are still chasing their dreams. We have seen contestants who receive harsh comments from judges because they are unattractive or their voices are unpleasant. Rachelle can relate to them, as she also participated in several singing competitions before emerging as the winner of “Search for a Star” in 2004.
“Lumaki ako actually insecure dahil sa mga naririnig ko Ang hirap Ang dami kong pinagdaanan, pero ginamit ko iyon to be better and kahit anong sabihin ng mga tao ay pwede pala akong manalo Nanalo po ako noon nang sinabihan ako ng negative. So iyon ang pinanghahawakan ko, Tito Boy. Kahit anong sabihin ng tao, I just need to focus on what I can do,
you don’t need to listen to other people.” Rachelle met her husband, Martin Spies, while in New York. They were introduced by their common friends. “Before I met him in New York, hindi ako ready noon sa any relationship, pero sabi ko lang ‘Lord, ipagdadasal ko po iyong future husband ko.’ Pero very specific iyong aking prayer request,” she said. The couple has two wonderful kids who can speak Tagalog, English and Afrikaans, since Martin is South African. Rachelle doesn’t use physical punishment but tries gentle parenting to raise the children. Rachelle and Martin had a reunion with good friends Erik Santos, Sarah Geronimo, and Matteo Guidicelli during their recent vacation. She still keeps in touch with fellow champions even if she is now based in London. Ang maganda po sa friendship namin kasi with the showbiz world ang hirap na makahanap ng mapagkakatiwalaan talaga Alam namin iyong napagdaanan namin noon, so nandoon iyong trust. We open up to each other.” These champions prove that lifelong friendships can be found in the business of show.

Johnny Manahan brings celebs together in ‘A Night of 100 Stars’
by anne Pasajol Inquirer.net
JOHNNY Manahan, also known as Mr. M, held his “A Night of 100 Stars” party and brought together some of the icons and A-listers in the entertainment industry, including Piolo Pascual, Jericho Rosales, Angelica Panganiban, Martin Nievera and Zsa Zsa Padilla. The celebrities shone brightly in their black and white outfits at the event held at a hotel in Pasay City, as seen in

Among those who shared good words about Manahan was Concert King Nievera. The veteran singer stepped on the stage and said, “Welcome everybody. Welcome home — the home that Johnny Manahan has built from network to network.”
Jacob Batalon reflects on ‘Novocaine’...
PAGE B1
I learned a lot about the business and also a lot as an actor. It was stressful, but really fun,” he admitted.
Batalon has also expanded his filmography with roles in horror and comedy, including last year’s Tarot, which became a hit on Netflix. When asked about his approach to choosing projects, he explained, “At this point, I’m not really looking for anything specific—just whatever I find to be really fun and exciting.”
Despite his growing success, Batalon remains deeply connected to his roots. He comes from a large family, with four brothers and three sisters. His parents immigrated to Hawaii in the late 1980s or early 1990s, and like many Filipino families, they initially had more traditional career aspirations for their children. “My mom was disappointed that I wanted to be an actor. She wanted me to be a nurse,” he shared with a laugh. “But she was supportive of my venture in the end.”
For aspiring Filipino actors looking to break into Hollywood, Batalon has simple yet powerful advice: “Keep trying and keep working hard. It’s about how you prepare for the moments and staying ready for opportunities when they come.”
As for what’s next, Batalon has several projects in the pipeline. “There are a few things coming up. I just wrapped a project that I believe will be on Amazon, and there are some other things in the works,” he teased. While he remains tight-lipped about future roles, his steady stream of work suggests that he has no plans of slowing down. n

Leni Robredo, an epitome of a courageous woman
My P.E.P. (People, Events,Places)
THE first time I saw Leni Robredo was during the wake for her husband Jessie Robredo at Malacanang’s Kalayaan Hall (I used to work there as Presidential Message Writer under the late Press Secretary Teddy Benigno). She showed courage in the midst of the tragic death of the man believed to be a country’s future leader.
I vividly remember she inquired who was the owner of the attache case beside her, and I answered politely that it was mine for it contained some paperworks to be edited; I was then connected with the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office as a writer consultant.
She smiled, and I extended my sincerest condolences to her. As I shook her hand, I could see a vision that she would enter public service to continue her husband’s legacy of serving the people.
Gemeline Braga-Calingo, widow of my late boss, Dr. Luis Calingo, who was the president of Holy Angel University in Angeles City, Pampanga, was recently with her daughter, my friend beauty queenwriter-educator-artist Arienne Calingo in Paris, France.
I remember Gemeline’s intelligence, kindness, humility and courage that will inspire other women to go on with life amidst the trials one has to confront in this world. Confidence, determination and faith in the Divine Providence will guide us to a right direction.

This year’s Oscars is filled with surprises. I do agree with the 2025 winners.
Some of the winners of 2025 Oscars are Best Actor Adrien Brody of “The Brutalist,” Best Actress Mikey Madison of “Anora,” Best Supporting Actor Kieran Culkin of “A Real Pain,” and Best Supporting Actress Zoe Saldana of “Emilia Perez.”
The late Remedios S. Isip, born on November 6,1928 to parents Valentin and Antonia Santiago, was married to Tax Commissioner Elpidio O. Isip and was blessed with 10 children. She was a genuine, positive, generous and jolly person. In 1978, she was introduced to Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and Lord. The succeeding year, she opened her home to Friday Nights Bible Study. In December 1987, she became a U.S. immigrant. She drew life lessons from the lives of Bible men and women, and she used those gifts to support her local church. She assisted as a greeter and usher, attended prayer meetings and did in-home visitations with other ministry helpers. She enjoyed traveling that enhanced her twilight years. She
cherished her trips twice in Japan and her travels around other states to visit her growing family. She helped them improved their lives in the best of her abilities. DIVORCE cases involving entrepreneurs and business owners often poses challenges when valuing a community business. Some litigants are part owner of the business while others own the business entirely by themselves or sometimes with their divorcing spouse. In California, there are several methods commonly used to value a business during a divorce. These methods help determine the fair market value of the business, which is crucial for equitable distribution of assets. The family code generally requires that assets be valued as close to trial date unless the court orders and alternate valuation date. Here are some common valuation methods:
1. Market Approach: This method involves comparing the business to similar businesses that have recently been sold. By analyzing comparable sales, market multiples, and other relevant factors, an appraiser can estimate the value of the business.
2. Income Approach: This method considers the future income potential of the business. It involves evaluating the company’s historical financial performance and
How is a privately held business valued in a California divorce case?
projecting future earnings. The appraiser then applies a capitalization rate or discount rate to determine the present value of expected future income.
3. Asset Approach: This method focuses on the value of the company’s assets. It involves assessing the fair market value of the business’s tangible and intangible assets, such as equipment, inventory, intellectual property, and goodwill.
4. Combination Approach: In some cases, a combination of valuation methods may be used to provide a more comprehensive assessment of the business’s value. This can involve considering multiple factors, such as market data, income projections, and asset values. The best method to value a business will depend on the specific nature of the business, its profitability, and its assets. It is important that both the forensic CPA and the divorce attorney have a thorough understanding of the business or businesses at issue in the case. Now, who values the business in a divorce case? There are several options.
1. The parties can try to value the business on their own. The parties may have an in-depth knowledge of the
value of the business by virtue of being operators, but this can also result in undervaluation or over valuation. Also, if one spouse is the sole operator, it can place the other spouse in an extreme disadvantage.
2. Hiring a joint forensic accountant for the business valuation during the divorce either pursuant to Evidence Code Section 730 or informally. A joint forensic accountant is one who both spouses trust to provide a proper valuation and on whom both spouses rely in negotiations that may lead to a settlement. A joint forensic accountant, like any forensic accountant, does not provide legal advice. Spouses who hire a joint forensic accountant can also utilize a separate forensic accountant to review the joint accountant’s work.
3. Each spouse can hire his and her forensic accountant for a business valuation.
Each spouse can hire their own forensic accountant for business valuation as their own expert. Typically, the court will order that the two experts do a side by side in their calculation of the business valuation in order to focus and isolate where the difference between the two expert valuations lie.
Dividing private businesses during the divorce poses challenges to divorce litigants where there is no readily
available quote as to the value of the private business. As a result, heavy reliance is placed on the appraisal by forensic CPA who may have different valuations for the same business.

What Christ’s transfiguration means
Pastor’s Notes
reverend rodel G. BAlAGtAs
FAITH is a treasure that we must possess to live a life of hope, especially in trying times. It’s a gift we must ask God for every day to navigate experiences of uncertainty and doubt. It embodies our desire when we say the Surrender Novena prayer: “Oh Jesus, I surrender myself to You; take care of everything.” In this prayer, we entrust ourselves to God—body and soul—along with all our affairs, concerns, and worries. Therefore, faith is not merely a set of beliefs or doctrines; it is an act of surrender to God and all His mysterious ways. Abraham demonstrated this act of faith in this Sunday’s (March 16) First Reading. He had to trust in God’s promise that He would grant him descendants and a land for them, assuring that He would be their God and they would be His people.
This message of trust is particularly relevant today, as global issues such as war, conflict, and confusion demoralize and discourage us. Shall we not lose hope in God, believing that He will intervene in these troubling world affairs? Can we trust that He will bring an end to them by sending us true leaders who will work for peace and justice, forgetting their selfish ambitions and motives?
Peter, James, and John must have experienced a profound sense of hope when Jesus was

transfigured before them on a mountain, praying as His face changed in appearance and His clothing became dazzlingly white. Moses and Elijah conversed with Him, offering a connection to those who had once liberated their people from persecution and suffering. They realized that the promised Savior was in their midst. In this moment of awe, they did not want to leave the mountain. Peter proposed that they build three tents—one for Jesus, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. However, Jesus explained to them that His transfiguration waas not the answer to all their questions and concerns. It was neither the beginning nor the end of the story; rather, it was merely a prelude to something greater that was to come. They would not yet understand that the Son of Man must suffer and die, and on the third day, He would rise again. But first, they must listen to Him, follow Him, learn from Him, serve with Him, and become witnesses of the greater story ever told— His suffering, death, and resurrection. All these events are necessary to save humanity from the consequences of the First Fall and all forms of sin, evil, and delusion, and to instill hope amidst our sufferings: the hope that our lives and the world can be at peace if we remain faithful to His teachings and commandments, and the hope that there is eternal life beyond this world. Those who sow hatred, greed, and corruption will ultimately face their deserved judgment.
As we celebrate the Second Sunday of Lent, may we grow in faith, hope, and love by believing in and living out the Paschal Mystery: Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again! In Christ’s love, Fr. Rodel “Odey” Balagtas

Manila International Film Festival Chairman Omen Ortiz affirmed that the festival “aims to achieve recognition and to elevate the standards of the Philippine film industry.”
One can clearly recognize the recurring themes of advancing cinema, collaboration,
representation and working towards placing the Philippines and Filipinos on a global stage throughout the entire festival. There’s no doubt Filipinos from all over the world love nostalgia and reminiscing about their favorite actors and films from our native land. By the same token, organizers didn’t fall short of looking back and giving recognition where it’s due. Several awards such as the Visionary Award, Monty Manibog Lifetime Achievement Award, Trailblazer Award, Audience Awards and awards in various categories were bestowed in this special night sponsored by BingoPlus, Megaworld International, Lumiché, Philippine Airlines, Delimondo, NBCUniversal, Golden TV, Birns & Sawyer, Rigor M.D., the Philippines Department of Trade and Industry, Stella Rosa Philippines and Mariposa Global Journeys. Philippine First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos received the MIFF Visionary Award. A stalwart supporter of the arts and Philippine cinema, the first lady through the freshly minted Cinegang Inc., shines the spotlight on the Philippine movie industry. In an optimistic message, Araneta-Marcos said, “Seeing our countrymen — regardless of where they are in the world — unite in creativity and passion is a testament to the boundless potential we can achieve when we work together.”
Revered and well-loved actresses such as “Star for All Seasons” Vilma Santos and the Movie Workers Welfare Foundation, Inc. (Mowelfund)
Chairman Boots AnsonRoa; matriarch of Regal Entertainment Mother Lily Monteverde and Philippine National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts Ricky Lee were each honored with a Monty Manibog Lifetime Achievement Award.
The festival, coming off the heels of the Los Angeles wildfires, which devastated neighborhoods wherein many of our kababayans resided, honored Filipino-American first responders through a heartfelt mini-documentary shown during the tribute gala. Winner of the MIFF Audience Best Picture “Song of the Fireflies” received a $150,000
co-production package deal from Birns & Sawyer, one of the oldest film equipment rental companies in Hollywood, which is run by its CEO Mari Acevedo.
The film was also awarded a Special Recognition Award for promoting Philippine music, arts and culture through the retelling of the inspiring story of the Loboc Children’s Choir.
“Faith Healers,” produced and directed by Regina Aquino, which tells the story and migration of early Filipino healthcare professionals in America also received a Special Recognition Award.
Trailblazer Awardees include accomplished actress and singer Tia Carrere who is best known for her roles in “Wayne’s World.” “True Lies,” and “Lilo & Stitch”; Nico Santos who is known for his roles in “Superstore” and “Crazy Rich Asians.” “The Debut,” which is the first Filipino American film to be released theatrically nationwide in the U.S., celebrates its 25th anniversary this year with a MIFF Trailblazer Award as well.

being really loud this time and we are really proud of representing out culture. Production is leveling up. This event looks beautiful. We are here to show up and showcase who we are as a culture.”
On representation
Multi-awarded singer Deborah Cox asserted, “It’s important for recognition, inclusion. It’s important to show the diversity of everything that we do. Art is not linear. We all have different experiences and it’s important to explore and showcase all the different talents from all over the world.”
“Love Hurts” Director Jonathan Eusebio affirms, “There’s a lot of representation now. It’s nice to have Filipino films brought up to the mainstream. There’s a lot of talent there. It’s nice that we are now getting recognized.”
Experiences on and off camera
MIFF Best Actress winner
Morisette Amon talks about her first acting role in a film, which was a stunning performance in the MIFF Best Picture “Song of the Fireflies,” and exclaimed that she “had the best team supporting me and it’s definitely something that I will bring with me.”
On collaborations
Actor of the highest grossing Filipino film of all time and MIFF Worldwide Box Office Hit awardee “Hello, Love, Again” and producer of the film “Labyu
With an Accent” Mark Labella is a pioneer of collaborations between filmmakers from the Philippines and the U.S. and he is “excited to be part of something that’s growing.”
Actor Reggie Lee observed, “People are now starting to talk. People are now starting to talk to each other. Collaboration is important…to combine talent from the Philippines with talent from here. Many actors want to expand their domain. We are at the beginning stage. At the end of the day, it’s going to be about what stories are going to get greenlit.”
Two-time Emmy Award winner, producer and host Marc Anthony Nicolas exclaimed, “I love how we don’t have crab mentality. Everyone here tonight is always lifting each other up. We have grown. We have inspired, and it is up to us to make everyone’s dreams come
true. Regina Aquino, producer and director of “Faith Healers,” loves “watching all the collaborations happening between the Philippine cinema community in the Philippines and the Filipino American creatives here in the U.S. and having this film festival only means that we’ll be collaborating more. Our film made it a point to make sure that we hire creatives in the Philippines (to work) on our film. We wanted to make sure that the film that we are showing here also highlights Filipino cinema talent all over the world. That is why this festival is so meaningful to me.”
MIFF Producer Winston Emano is proud of some developments he has seen. “One improvement we’ve seen in terms of collaborations since last year is dialoguing. We’ve established panels and workshops that foster dialogue between peers, filmmakers, film commissions and actors.
It’s a bit of a start. This is an opportunity for us to collaborate more,” he stated.
Hopes for the future John Arcilla exclaimed, “We are the pioneers (of film) in Asia. I really wish we can also penetrate the global community for a mainstream audience just like the Koreans have it now. That’s the dream. I really wish that we can also be known as one of the best filmmakers in the world, because we have a lot of stories to tell. We have a very colorful culture that we can show the world.”
MIFF Trailblazer Awardee and two-time Grammy Award winner Tia Carrere believes “Philippine cinema is definitely going places. We’re hoping to see our first win at the Oscars.”
“Hannah Montana” and “Camp Rock” actress Anna Maria Perez De Tagle-Kline said, “It’s taken a long time for us to come here to celebrate the Filipino American community in the industry. As much as it has taken a long time, I think it’s a very big step for us. I am very honored and blessed to be part of the community. I’m very open about my being Filipino. I hope more Filipino actors and actresses come out and are very vocal about being proud.”
TV and film personality Bunny Paras wishes to see more films like “Espantaho” showcasing our pamahiin and old traditions.
MIFF Best Actor Seth Fedelin
of the film “My Future You” encourages young people, “You can do anything. Just see, think and imagine…”
Getting on a global stage
The Kingdom Director Mike Tuviera asserted that “there is a bigger world out there. There are Filipinos all over the place. There’s an international audience out there. Even if we don’t have the same history, we have shared experiences and commonalities.”
Multi-award-winning actress Lorna Tolentino of the film “Espantaho” said “there should be a collaboration between all of the Filipinos in the Philippines
and abroad. A collaboration will make for a higher standard (in filmmaking).”
One leaves the festive lobby and hallways of The Beverly Hilton overjoyed and brimming with optimism for the next festivals to come. Yet there is a lingering question that now comes to mind, “What needs to be done to make our mark on a global stage?”
