A SHORT film highlighting Filipino nurses and their contributions to the labor movement was screened over the weekend to celebrate the launch of the Bulosan Center for Filipino Studies at UC Davis in Sacramento, California. Co-hosted by the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United (CNA/NNU) on Saturday, Feb. 22, “The Strength of Many” by Emmy-winning director Marissa Aroy chronicles the Filipino nurse experience as seen through the eyes of nurse labor activists. The screening was held at UC Davis’ Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing and featured remarks from Aroy; Robyn Rodriguez, chair of the university’s Asian American Studies and director of the Bulosan Center; Zenei Cortez, president of California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee/National Nurses United; and Bonnie Castillo, executive director of NNU and CNA/NNOC. Aroy previously produced and directed “The Delano Manongs” about Filipino farm labor activist Larry Itliong and other Filipino activists who took part in the Delano Grape Strike of 1965.

MANILA — President Rodrigo Duterte stressed the importance of defending the legacy of the country’s bloodless revolution that toppled the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos and installed Corazon Aquino as president.

While he skipped the rites marking the 34th anniversary of the People Power Revolution on Monday, February 24, Duterte issued a statement in which he recognized how the uprising led to the restoration of democracy. PRESIDENT Duterte leads the personalities detained Sen. Leila de Lima wanted banned in the U.S. for her detention over the past three years. Ferdie Maglalang, the senator’s media officer, confirmed to Philstar.com that a “longer and more detailed” list than that which the senator released last October was submitted to the U.S. embassy in the second week of January. The embassy would then have sent the document to the U.S. State Department, which will be responsible to implement a U.S. budget provision that prohibits entry to U.S. shores of people responsible for De Lima’s “wrongful imprisonment.” The embassy has yet to respond to our inquiries as of this posting. MANILA — The mea culpa came four years late and was issued while the media conglomerate was facing an existential threat.
