DESPITE critics lamenting the termination of the two-decadeold Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA), United States President Donald Trump brushed off the Duterte administration’s decision by saying it would help the U.S. save “a lot of money.” A day after the Philippines notified the U.S. that it would end the military agreement, the U.S. president on Wednesday, February 12 said that “I never minded that very much, to be honest. We helped the Philippines very much...That’s fine, we’ll save a

lot of money.” Malacañang announced on Tuesday, February 11 that the Philippines has formally sent a notice terminating the VFA with the U.S. Duterte ordered the termination after the U.S. canceled the visa of Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa, who spearheaded Duterte’s war on drugs during his stint as police chief. The VFA, which came into force in 1999, covers the conduct of U.S. soldiers in the Philippines. It can be terminated through a written notice from either of the countries, taking effect 180 days after the notification.

AS protests continue against the Duterte administration’s move to revoke ABS-CBN’s franchise, Malacañang on Thursday, February 13 brushed it off as “much ado about nothing” since the media giant can apply for a new license to operate. According to Panelo, the reason why Calida filed the petition is because of “his constitutional duty.” “If he does not, then he opens himself to criminal prosecution — of dereliction of duty... He cannot close his eyes to any violation regardless of the time,” Panelo noted. Calida on Monday, February 10, filed a petition before the Supreme Court for the cancellation of ABS-CBN’s 25-year franchise, alleging that the TV network reportedly violated rules set by Congress. MANILA — Government volcanologists on Friday, February 14, lowered Taal Volcano’s alert status from Level 3 to Level 2, which is characterized by “decreased unrest.” The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), in its 8 a.m. Taal Volcano bulletin, downgraded the volcano’s alert status after observing “decreased magmatic unrest and generation of weak steam-laden

plumes” in the activity of the main crater. “Alert Level 2 means that there is decreased unrest but should not be interpreted that unrest has ceased or that the threat of an eruption has disappeared,” Phivolcs said. “Should an uptrend or pronounced change in monitored parameters forewarn a potential eruption, the Alert Level may be raised back to Alert Level 3,” it added. AS public health officials, scientists and the medical community are currently researching to combat and mitigate the spread of the coronavirus, the global Asian community has been fighting its own battle against xenophobia, racism and acts of hate. Aided by the flood of misinformation that has catalyzed mass hysteria regarding the mysterious virus (officially called COVID-19), the reactions to the virus have resulted in acts of hate, harassment and at least one hate crime.
